There’s a pretty cool short video titled “The Life and Death of the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. Hornet” on Youtube.

Also...that Japanese ship that they found earlier. Holy shit! Battle report stated that an attack disabled the steering resulting in her slowly circling “for another day” while U.S. Army Air Force relentlessly attacked. Sounds like one hell of a drawn out nightmare.

WWII nautical finds have resulted in some of the most fascinating threads going all the way back to HF.

That is how they took down the  Bismarck.  Her steering mechanism was kaput, and all she could do was circle.

International Harvester image is awesome. My dad used to work for them. Get a little free pub out of that, I'm sure.

I bet the damn thing would crank. Farmall ftw

Twice, while your point is valid, WWII warships did not have air conditioning.

Perhaps not. I may be conflating post war improvements to Fletcher class destroyers with my Dad's experience. Regardless, day to day conditions were very good compared to a Marine on shore.

Forgive my ignorance , but how do you hook up to tow something like that?

Patience, lube, and a BUNCH of seaman.

First they shoot a small rope over to the sailors on the disabled ship and they pull it up to bring the heavier line over - then eventually winch the tow chain/cable.

at least that was how they did it in an old documentary from WWII.
