not a bad topic.  consensus is DJ, with ET, michael griffin, and cory redding getting mentions.

gotta be DJ

Toward the end, Greg Davis  did a pretty good job of keepin our offense off of the field.

Scott Derry.

Same.  Orakpo, Huff and ET are my second level

hey guys, he's right over there

See, that's a heads up play right there.  No. 3 is about ready to break the tackle and run for a long gain.  Recognizing that, Scott looks over to the ref in the middle of the play to call a time out and prevent that from happening.  Most linebackers would head straight to the runner and attempt to make the tackle.  But Scott was a linebacker cut from a different mold.

no hampton or rogers mentions?  they were absolute rocks.

I thought about that, but the question was since 2000, and the 2000 season was their last at Texas.

An argument could also be made for Orakpo, but Johnson was the first guy I thought of.

Johnson was the best, but Malcom Brown has to be high on the list.

if Derry is 2a then killebrew is 2b.

The guy that was the defensive player of the game in the game that mattered most: Michael Huff

I think 3rd is where the debate starts

what the hell does this even mean?  and ET was not a better college player than DJ.

Lubbock in 2008 might disqualify ET anyway.

for just college you can’t put a lot of separation between ET and Huff or Griffin.  the debate is for 2nd best.

I mean DJ was better in burnt orange, I think ET edges him as a better player.

We're talking about a redshirt sophomore that went to the draft, and was probably the best DB in the country in 2009. As a 21 year old.

As for Huff and Griffin, I don't know. It depends on the criteria. Huff and Griffin weren't good enough to leave after 2 years. That makes it a little murky.

What's the top 10?

1. DJ

2. Earl

3. Redding

4. Orakpo

5. Vasher

6. Michael Griffin

7. Marcus Tubbs

8. Huff

9. Ross

10. Quentin Jammer

I hold grudges.  2008 Crabtree knocks ET off the list  for me. Yes 1 mistake. But that mistake took away a natty and what could have been a dynasty

Recall that a hit by ET there would have just made it a field goal from the 2.  They had plenty of time.

This is true.  But in the flip side. Recall that a batted down pass would have been better lol. Yes still bitter

It's definitely DJ.

Honorable mention to ET, Huff, and Rak.

Huff should be getting more love here.  Yeah, he wasn't great early on, but he improved and won the Thorpe.

Uhh.. Sergio Kindle??

DJ is top of the list. A few others that are in the top are definitely Michael Huff, the Griffins, Brian Robison, Sergio Kindle, Cory Redding

Greg Davis

DJ then ET. It's a big gap after that. Those of you saying Huff, Huff was ass early in his career.

Hampton abd rogers?

DJ

ET

Mi.Griffin/Huff

Orakpo

Ross

Our 2000 defense included Corey Redding, Shaun Rogers, Casey Hampton and Quintin Jammer. It'd be cool to get back to something like that.

Not sure.  But Bill Connelly of S&P+ is the most defensive stat guy currently in the field.

It shouldn't. That was a red-shirt freshman ET. I don't think you can put the Tech loss on him. Especially when one of his teammates dropped a cupcake game-winning interception.

Jammer was so damn good for a few years. I’d put him at 7.

Derrick Johnson and no one else is close. That's not a knock on anyone else-- it's a testament to how fucking good DJ was. You could see it from game 1 his freshman year.
