It’s inevitable that many many jobs will be automated and/or sent overseas. And even jobs that remain will pay less because of the automation/offshore competition.   And yes, even highly trained people will be affected.  Not everyone but many.

I don’t care if you’re a lawyer, doctor, engineer or dock workers.  Your job and income will take a hit. AI and Indian lawyers trained and licensed as US attorneys will do some of your job. It’s already happening. Some medical exams are now done remotely over an app, and surgeries will be performed by someone sitting in the other side of the world using robotic tech.

Everyone says that they can’t be replaced by automation/offshoring until they are.  And replacing doesnt mean total elimination.  Say you have a team of 5 (insert job name) in America today. Tomorrow that may be 1 in America with 2 offshore and AI performing basic mental tasks such as scheduling the team or handling communications with the customers. And eventually the 1 American is mainly the face of the offshore team and tech.

if you have a kid, steer them down a path of a career that is difficult to automate or outsource. Don’t assume that highly trained people are safe.

Electrician. Plumber. These careers are lucrative if you don’t mind some dirty work and have a desire for entrepreneurship/small business owner.

Every career will still have options but the competition will be tougher and tougher.

Hell become a consultant on automation and offshoring.

AI is going to figure out how to replace doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc but it won't be able to unclog a shitter?

You got it. AI will talk to the customer and schedule the plumber but it ain’t walking into the bathroom.

Yang explains this.  Repetitive cognitive tasks are much easier to automate than difficult physical tasks here there's a lot more variability. It would be very hard to make a robot that could repair an airconditioner but you can train AI to read xrays, write articles, conduct legal research.

My employer is looking to add chat functionality on our website for customers.  I know I know,  we’re really leading the pack in new tech. But we are investigating skipping people running the chat and going right to AI chat supported by 1-2 people acting as the second level of chat if an issue occurs.  It’s almost scary watching the AI chat operate during tests.  You have to set a response delay because it’s creepy how fast AI can respond.

Google, Apple and amazon already have AI talking with you in regards to Siri, Alexa and google assist. Not just chat.

I know that call centers are not usually careers of choice but the point is that people today are working to automate your job.  Lot of smart people doing that. We have to plan and accept it’s occurring. What’s the tipping point that our economic, tax and govt models have to change when 20 or or 40 or 60% of the population is unemployable. It’s easy to ignore the problem until the problem makes up 50% of the voting base.

NBA power forward?

Did someone get nuked from the board? I see people arguing with a nonexistent poster. What happened?

I think "the" was nuked. Probably for trolling. I don't know, I didn't report him

Weird guy. Would type a lot of words that really didn’t mean anything. Just the sort of thing that someone being paid to post would do.

i like engaging someone with a different view if they can at least hold a decent conversation that doesn’t resort to name calling Nd they can actually debate with facts. That guy couldn’t.

I finally ignored the guy just to avoid seeing his weak posts.

Yeah... Sometimes I get trolled a bit... Someone condescending to me is a good way to get to me.

I'm not 100% sure about my own psychology as to why, but it can get me going.

Highly doubt this.  Medical boards in each state would need to license out of country surgeons.  They don't even let out of state doctors do anything.  Maybe 3-4 generations down the line but by then we'll have all kinds of other issues.  Look at 3-4 generations back and we the pace we advance is only getting faster.

Indeed.  I'm actually slowly moving over to you crazy socialist bastards.

Austria gives every family that has a kid $1k/mo, until that kid turns 18, to offset expenses.

That is to help offset a declining birth rate.

Interviewer guy: "Is not Universal basic Income though kind of Socialism by other means?"

Yang: "Um, it's very much not...It's Capitalism where income doesn't start at zero."

Mr. Yang thinks the US has some kinda "Technology Dividend" that we can treat like oil wealth.  I disagree with that sentiment.  He does though, echo a sentiment from higher up in this thread: Trade jobs are less susceptible to automation, and we'd be good to encourage young folks to pursue them.

Socialism is being tossed around in speeches and online comments by people that can’t really explain what it is. It’s seems to be simplified down to “you taking my stuff.”  An expert in the field cant define it with a single sentence to cover its meanings.

I saw his photo in the news today regarding UBI and I thought why is Professor Andrew Ng discussing UBI, and why is his last name misspelled? Then I realized that Yang is not Ng.

Uh.... hmm.

I think Mr. Yang's focus on UBI as the central issue appeals to a bunch of useless, jobless white supremacist nerds who like the idea of getting $1k/mth to live with mom, jerk off to anime porn, make racist memes, and play video games.

Something to keep an eye on.

Yeesh.

(Not that he's bad or UBI is bad, but it's interesting to see who jumps onto which trains and where those tracks lead.)

Well, 4chan got behind him because of what they call the NEET lifestyle.

They're calling the freedom dividend NEETbux.

The online alt-right fascination with Yang is bizarre.

More bizzare than the Tulsi infatuation.

OK... uh...

Yang is probably going to be the next president because this world is fucking insane and that's all that makes sense in my brain now as what would be correct to happen in a narrative sense.

Oh boy.

WTF is going on here?  You're telling me dildo spencer supports my guy?  God damn it.

But one day it will design a toilet/pipes that are virtually uncloggable and unbreakable, rendering plumbers useless.

And what do you think is gonna happen to wages/demand for plumbers, electricians, etc. when everyone starts flooding into those fields in hopes of avoiding automation?

Yes.

So a huge thing that helped Trump was that he captured the imagination of the lonely, isolated, always-online, young white men who inhabit places like 4chan and Reddit. He was big, loud, fun personality and he told that group (indirectly, because he didn't even know these people existed) that the system was rigged against them, that people that were not like them were to blame, and that he was going to fix everything. Everyone that hated those guys also hated Trump. They went to war for the God Emperor.

They made the memes that filled the Facebook threads of idiot boomers and other flavors of traditional conservatism, and that confluence of Internet freaks and easy-to-grift old people was the ground in which the Milos and Charlie Kirks could grow. This has all grown into an ecosystem of Trump madness that is self-reinforcing and, ultimately, self-destructing. The Internet freaks will/have started to move on to more fertile ground and the conservatives will remain.

Those Internet freaks weren't conservatives. Their loyalty was only ever to Trump, and like Trump himself when his wives have kids, their eyes will wander to something shiny and new.

2020 is coming. Trump hasn't delivered. They can either double down on Daddy or they can let their eyes wander.

So here comes Yang.

Why is Yang attractive to them?

- He tells them a story they understand. (they understand the power of AI and the idea of AI displacing work is something they can visualize and even extrapolate forward past what Yang even says)
- He is unintimidating. (Asians are the pet minority of white society. Half these freaks are jerking off onto Anime body pillows all day)
- He does not challenge them. (he's not an obvious SJW; he doesn't have a history or tie with any prominent libs or lib groups)
- Their lives are shit. (ties in with the story of job loss and a lack of hope for the future)
- $1000/mth would be a salvation to them. (they're NEETs, they don't have expensive tastes, they could live in mom's basement comfortably with $1k/mth)

Something to really pay attention to looking forward are the demographics of his supporter base. I suspect it is going to be young-male dominated and will basically look almost exactly like Trump's base among those younger than 35-40.

I will save a spot for you on the Sanders Dirigible. It's where all the young women and minorities are hanging out. It smells better than the Yang Yacht which is full of unwashed gamers.

Yang is going to ride the groyper vote to the nomination.
