Some strong entries. Didn't see where the Graduate fell in that list.  Original scores for a movie that make it to popular culture are the win for me.

3 off the top of my head that make a strong case for the list are Harold & Maude (arguably the only Cat Stevens album one needs for their collection), Almost Famous, and The Big Lebowski.

I didn't look at the list.  When I saw John Sayles' Baby It's You back in the early 80s, I thought it had the best soundtrack ever.  I think there were some licensing problems with releasing the film on video because he may have used some Springsteen songs without permission.  Anyway, if memory serves, it was a mix of 60s music and Springsteen and it really worked.  And that's all I have to say about that.

Spinal Tap out of the top 10 is nonsense. Outranked by "Love Jones" no less. And where the fuck is The Muppet Movie?

I think that in a few of those they confused sound track with movie score. I have a copy of Mayfields Superfly album, and I love it. But that was pretty much the entire movie. Or has it just been a long, long time since I have seen the movie?

Other then Easy Rider, I would guess that Pulp started, or at least solved the contemporary music rights issue that kept earlier directors from doing similar compilations that we all take for granted today. And that only happened because of Fonda and Hopper. Both who had the connections to get a sweet deal (each band got a supposed $1000) with Steppenwolf to include BOTH The Pusher and Born to be wild. And Hopper was forced to use McGuinn’s version of “I’m only Bleeding”, as Dylan wouldn’t allow his version in the film. Without those songs the movie would have felt much differently.

So you would have to put Easy Rider high on the list simply because it pretty much pulled from the top 100 of its time. Which was unprecedented.

List includes Rushmore, Pulp Fiction, Good Will Hunting, and Goodfellas so I am pretty OK with it.

Yea, no Almost Famous? Empire Records? Reality Bites? The Big Chill?

Add to that Garden State.  At least they got Clueless right.  That one is often overlooked.

I haven't heard that Don Felder song in forever. He didn't have a bad voice, but he didn't really sing on many songs, did he?

Heavy Metal had an interesting mix of artists

and you couldn't watch the movie with the soundtrack for years because of all the lawsuits over the music.

No matter how much we all hate disco music you can't have a top 50 soundtrack list without SNF.

I like the inclusion of the Repo Man soundtrack to the list and its relatively high ranking.

At the same time, I'm disappointed and appalled that Amadeus is not included.

Gummo-a reprehensible movie no one should watch-is on the list because of Roy Orbison's brilliant "Crying." Just listen to Roy. Don't waste your time with that POS movie.

I guess since the Last Waltz was a documentary about The Band and not a "film" it doesn't qualify?

Where the fuck is vision quest???

And ford fairlane?

Correct.

Other notable omissions:

The Sting

Jackie Brown

16 Candles

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

She's Having A Baby

Owned these ones on CD:

Judgment Night

Dazed and Confused

Boogie Nights (both volumes)

Pulp Fiction

2001: A Space Odyssey

Trainspotting

Superfly

Never owned a Wes Anderson soundtrack, but that man can fucking pick winners. Jealous film school drop outs and haters can get fucked. I like my Wes Anderson movies with the most Wes Anderson-y soundtracks possible.

Technically a score and not a soundtrack, but I fucking love Elmer Bernstein's arrangements in "To Kill a Mockingbird."

Tom Petty's recordings for "She's the One" were sublime. I wore that thing out. Great originals and covers alike. Never seen the movie and never will. It is so stand-alone good I don't need a shitty movie to mess it up for me.

"Little Miss Sunshine" is an amazing soundtrack that often gets overlooked.

Valley Girl needs to be on the list.

"She's The One" was my first thought.

Also would have thought at least ONE of Knopfler's soundtracks would have made the list:  Pick one.  Local Hero, Last Exit to Brooklyn, Cal, or The Princess Bride.

Also,  like all Cameron Crowe movies, I enjoyed the soundtrack for "Elizabethtown".

Bingo.  Anything with Peter Case/Plimsouls is alright in my book.  And it had TWO of them.  Add in the Gary Myrick and Modern English songs.....tough to beat.

Yes. It should be on the list not only for the songs but for the goofing on the songs. "Lawrence...Lawrence of Arabia....he's an English guy..."

Very true.  Can't believe I overlooked that one.  A heinous omission.

A Texas website and no one has mentioned Friday Night Lights?  Incredible original soundtrack that didn't make a list focusing on iconic music that started from pop culture then were used in movies.

Classic beauty.

And all the great lines too:

"Oh my God, did you come?"

"I'm glad I came!!"

leaving out ellen aim (played by a 19 year old diane lane) in the musical masterpiece "streets of fire" renders this list bunk.

No Reservoir Dogs?

+1 on Vision Quest and Last of the Mohicans

and no Tommy Boy?

Local Hero is great. I think that was his first film score. Underrated movie too.

Whoa.  For a moment I thought you were disparaging the greatness of "She's All That".

Surprised they left out The Big Chill.  Caused a pretty serious resurgence of Motown in the 80s.

These were all right in my wheelhouse, so totally agree.  Also think Singles is wayyyyy to low at 47.

Songs from PJ, Soundgarden, Pumpkins, Westerberg, AiC, Screaming Trees, etc.  And not just songs - great songs.  Many of which were not previously released or were unheard in mainstream.  Its one thing to have a soundtrack like Forest Gump or the Big Chill and get the rights to a bunch of hits.  Its another to releases a soundtrack with a bunch of unheard music.

Sorry if already commented upon, but I see neither Snatch or Lock Stock and 2SBs.

Yes along that same line Layer Cake has a great mid 80's soundtrack (and is also a fantastic movie, got Craig the Bond role).

Wang Chung's "To Live and Die in LA" was a perfect score.

I mean, if the producer/director said, "We're making a movie about cocaine, LA, and the 1980's," then that's about as great as you could hope for.
