December 30, 20186 yr Finally found Celis Grand Cru in h-town yesterday. HEB at I-45 and Sawdust. I was wanting something different for the football games last night, I hit Specs right across the street, bigger selection; and asked the beer dude if they had the Celis Porter. He gave me some long explanation about their distributors not having it in this area yet. Then I told him I had bought the Grand Cru earlier in the day at HEB and he looked pissed. Hopefully the subsequent discussion results in the porter being available soon. I left with a 4pk of DNR. Oh and Austin folks, is Celis pronounced like or ?

December 31, 20186 yr Thought this was pretty cool. SIL spent the past couple of months in Guatamala. Found an actual craft brewery and brought back their stout with Guatemalan coffee and cocao. Really damn good, and they were more proud of their IPAs she said. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

January 1, 20196 yr Spent the past week or so in Virginia/DC area. Lots of stuff I'll never get down here. Tried to take notes but I know I left something off but here goes: Starr Hill Northern Lights IPA (VA)- Pretty mild for an IPA and I wanted to like it but it just lacked something. They use Cascade, Willamette and Columbus hops and it wasn't over the top and was drinkable but it was just kind of "meh." Devil's Backbone Striped Bass Pale Ale (VA). Other than the stupid beer and the fact that InBev owns them, this one had more flavor than the Starr Hill. Liked it enough that I'll look for it again whenever I'm back up there. Terrapin RecreationAle (GA) - Not sure why a beer named after the Maryland mascot is brewed in GA. Owned by MillerCoors. Advertises itself as a session beer and it could be. Hoppy and aromatic, citrus taste. Really liked this one. Alewerks Chesapeake Pale Ale (VA) - Really nice mix of flavors. This is an old school pale and reminded me of Sierra Nevada's. That's meant as a compliment. O'Connor Green Can Golden Ale (VA) - One of the best I had. A little cloudy but not like a NEIPA. Tart and citrusy. Would be easy to drink several of these in a row. Blue Mountain Dark Hollow Barrel Aged Imperial Stout (VA) - Definitely get the bourbon flavor with a little sweetness. Had this out of a bomber and that was enough for me. 10% ABV so you're not going to pound these. Hardywood Gingerbread Stout (VA) - Another bomber with a high ABV. The gingerbread was very present but not overpowering. Liked it but one was enough. O'Connor Norfolk Canyon Pale Ale (VA) - This was another decent but not great one. Fairly mild and non-descript. O'Connor El Gaupo Agave IPA (VA) - 7.5% so it creeps up on you but it didn't overpower. Really smooth and worth drinking. Devil's Backbone Vienna Lager (VA) - Decent but nothing I'd go out of my way to drink again. 4 Hands Pale Ale (MO) - This is brewed for Pi Pizza (good not great pizza in DC just north of the Mall.) Pretty mild and drinkable. Could have had a few of these. Evolution Exile Red Ale (MD) - This tasted more like an ESB or Pale than a red to me. Super smooth but also very robust. Would drink this again. Right Proper Raised by Wolves Dry Hopped Pale Ale (DC) - Almost a little bitter. Lots of citrus in the aroma and the taste. Was good but not great. Hellbender Panda Strike Force IPA (DC) - Other than the fact that the name is stupidly awesome, this was a really good beer. Big IPA with a lot of citrus. Clown Shoes Galactica IPA (MA) - For whatever reason, I had steered clear of Clown Shoes offerings lately. They used Galaxy hops in it (duh, right.) Loved this one. Will definitely try and find this around Houston. Honor Line of Sight Lager (VA) - Very light but there was something on the finish that tasted weird. Reminded me of Budweiser. Their sort of generic (and over the top patriotic) website makes me wonder who really owns this. It's brewed by Sleeping Giant out of Denver who only does contract brewing (they also do Guns and Oil.) Peak Fresh Cut Pilsner (ME) - Another beer sold under one label but brewed by someone else (Two Roads in Connecticut who also brews a lot of stuff under their own name.) This was the worst beer I had on the trip. Tasted like pine sap cut with water. DC Brau Brau Pils (DC) - Very drinkable Pilsner had this one with a lobster roll for lunch and it was better than the lobster roll. I do find it funny that the two breweries that sold out to Big Beer also make the largest variety of beers other than maybe Hardywood. Terrapin makes almost 30 by themselves and a lot of them are very exotic. Maybe more money helps. But I also found that both of their websites suck ass so maybe money is being spent on beer.
