Didn't see a thread on this, but if I missed it I'll GTFO.  Wife and I stopped buying wristbands/badges years ago, but we still enjoy a day or two toward the end of the week hanging around downtown or South Congress with no kids and catching some free shows.  Any recommendations?  We've attended South by San Jose at Hotel San Jose for the past few years and always find a few performers we really enjoy, but I know next to nothing about this year's Friday/Saturday lineup (except for Edie Brickel, who puts me to sleep, and only a few songs from Broken Social Scene).

Friday:

Broken Social Scene

Amyl and The Sniffers

Swervedriver

Molly Burch

Dylan Cartlidge

Gabriella Cohen

The Cactus Blossoms

Katie Harkin

Saturday:

Edie Brickell & New Bohemians

Ben Kweller

Combo Chimbita

Hayes Carll

Big Joanie

Dylan LeBlanc

Genital Panic

Tomar and the FCs

Any thoughts on the above, or any other free shit I should check out?

I used to love Ben Kweller circa 2006.  I caught his set at SXSW last year and it was not what I expected.  His band was just him on guitar, a dude playing some sort of electric drum kit and a keys player that looked like a suburban soccer mom.

Hayes Carll on Saturday.  If you want to stay south Yeti has good shows:

Lucy's is also good Wed-Sunday: https://www.facebook.com/events/416409339126799/

Also Yard Dog: https://www.yarddog.com/blogs/yard-dog-art-gallery-1/3-days-of-parties-in-march

Well y’all can come see me. I’m playing a solo acoustic set at Maggie Mae’s next Friday the 15th at 4PM.  Free show. For those of you who don’t know, yeah I’m one of the few chicks on the  Shag.

Trying to hit as many of these as possible

Wednesday
Steve Earle @ Waterloo 6pm
Susto @ Lucy’s 5pm
Lukas Nelson @ Lucy’s 6pm

Thursday
Izaak Opatz @ Scholz 1:30pm
Parker Gispert @ Yeti 2:30pm
Susto @ Yeti 6pm

Friday
Drivn N Cyrin @ Lucy’s 2
Hayes Carll @ Waterloo 3pm @ Yeti 5pm
Chris Shiflett @ Yeti 4pm
Texas Gents @ Arlyn Studios
Mathew Logan Vasquez @ Lucy’s 6pm

Saturday
SXSJ Ben Kweller, Hayes
Bob Schneider @ Yard Dog 2pm
JDG @ Continental 2pm
McMurtry @ Continental 3pm

any tips for free shows, or shows a normal peon had a chance at getting in, thurs night, fri day or night, or saturday?

check out showlistaustin or the austin chronicle unofficial event guide for day shows. in general, you shouldn't have a problem getting into any day shows.

Day shows will be fine. I will probably try to go to the Austin Chronicle event on Friday. Volstead/HotelVegas can get packed but they have tons of room and always have entire days full of shows for free. The pictures I've seen of San Jose and/or Waterloo's free shows look like nuts-to-butts and I'm not super into that right now so I have never checked those out. They are well-curated though.

The only two acts I have on my list right now are the Black Pumas and Jackie Venson. Black Pumas gotta be my favorite local band right now. Saw them in Houston in December and they were great, but I found out about them off of a SX recommendation last year (which they only played a couple shows). They have many more this year (just got signed).

I’ve done plenty of years at Waterloo and San Jose and there’s usually plenty of space in the back.

In no particular order:
Katie Pruitt
Laura Stevenson
Black Pumas
Yola Carter
Tyler Ramsey
SUSTO
Beduine
Quaker City Night Hawks
Sarah Shook and the Disarmers
Paul Cauthen
Drivin and Cryin
Marcus King

The entire set tomorrow at Lucy’s looks right of my alley. If I didn’t have my kids to watch this weekend or tickets to Texas baseball Saturday, I would likely do nothing but hop back and forth between Yeti, SXSJ, Waterloo, YardDog and Lucy’s wed-sat.

My plan for tomorrow is to hit SXSJ to see Mountain Man, Robert Ellis, and Black Pumas. Taking it easy because...

Thursday, I'll be at Luck Reunion all day. Really looking forward to seeing Yola and Marcus King there.

Friday,  I really want to see Sarah Shook at the Yard Dog party , but I don't know if I can get up and over there that early after Luck Reunion all day.

Two free parties on Friday on the east side that would flow well into each other are:

Brooklyn Bowl Family Reunion

@ Scoot Inn

1:00pm: Doors Open

1:15pm: LUTHI

2:00pm: Combo Chimbita

3:00pm: Matthew Logan Vasquez

4:00pm: Cha Wa

5:00pm: Garcia Peoples

ft. special guest William Tyler & more!

and

The Next Waltz Jamboree @ The Pershing (FREE, Free Karbach)

6:00pm-6:30pm - James Steinle

6:45pm-7:15pm - Carson McHone

7:30pm-8:00pm - Wood & Wire

8:15pm-8:45pm - Charley Crockett

9:00pm-9:30pm - Shinyribs

Lucy’s was packed as fuck. Susto was good though.

Dan Luke and The RAID was probably my find of the week. Yeti was my favorite party spot. McMurtry at Continental today was good. Got to see Susto twice. Good week. Done with crowds and lines for a while though.

I caught Edie Brickell last night at Hotel San Jose and was pleasantly surprised. She has an outstanding band and is a great live performer.  She’s also aged well.

Whoda fuq be shootin' e'erbody?  Seven shootings the past 36 hours, six of 'em in SXSW thick of things?

frankie and the witch fingers, psychedelic porn crumpets were the 2 highlights for me this year. gymshorts was the best band we accidentally stumbled upon. daikaiju was a hell of a way to close it out last night.

I made a point to see Psych Porn Crumpets on Friday and I wasn't disappointed. My "find" this SX was probably Durand Jones & The Indications. Saw them at Scoot Inn and I was blown away at how good the whole band was. Sounded great. I was at White Denim at Hotel Vegas as well, they were good, I'd listen again. Had never seen Broken Social Scene before, they were cool but probably not my cup of indie tea.

I guess J Roddy has a new band called Palm Palm that played a few shows.  Anyone catch them?
