Just saw this message from former Horn Vance Bedford. Keep Lam Jones in your prayers:

Lam Jones In 1994, was inducted into the Texas Athletics Hall of Honor. He is considered to be one of the greatest athletes in school history
Before enrolling at the University of Texas,he qualified for the 4 × 100 metres relay, becoming the youngest athlete from Texas to earn a berth on the U.S. Olympic track and field team. In the 1976 Summer Olympics, he won a gold medal running the second leg of the 4x100

2005, Jones was diagnosed with myeloma cancer that affects bone marrow in the legs. His cancer has returned and the end is near. Lift him up with prayer.

I remember watching him on the field as a WR, and at the Texas Relays when I was an undergrad. Lam could fly. Prayers.

i hope the Horns honor his memory and # with a helmet sticker.

Hook Em Lam!!!

It is still there. You just have to watch it on youtube.

Praying for Lam. I’m friends with one of his relay teammates from his famed HS state championship 4x100 relay. Have asked to hear the story a hundred times. Lam is a legend.

May he have comfort and be surrounded by love.

OK, so it watched it on YouTube.  Can you imagine trying to tackle any of that?

Before my time, but Hook ‘Em

Were we underdogs that year? Or were the lane selections just random?  You wouldn’t want to be on inside lane.

The USA had the fastest time in both the preliminary heats and the semifinal heats, so definitely not underdogs.

Jam, Ham and Lam.

Positive thoughts to the Lam family.

CSB....

I was an RA at Jester in 1978....Johnny Lam dropped by the 2nd floor office to meet one of the other RAs and he had the Montreal gold medal to tow.  Great guy...passed it around the group for us to hold.

Hold up....showing my age...to correct the record, it was Fall 1977, I wasn't an RA (yet).  No sure why I was in the 2nd floor office.

Tear shed.

Maybe it was just the camera angle, but when Lam took the baton he just seemed to explode past folks. Jesus, he could fly. T&P, man, T&P.

Good thoughts for him and his family.

A great Horn. 🤘

So fast.  Jones' leg looks effortless.  Like he wasn't even trying.  Have watched many times and continue to be impressed.

One of my favorite Horns growing up. That period in mid 70s as an 8 -10 year old made me a Horn forever.  RIP.

I was about to say it's the wrong way, but then remembered that I was there, across from the press box. Jones preferred to play running back. His freshman year, I recall he'd take a pitch out of the veer in his early games and defenders disastrously miscalculated their cut-off angles due to Lam's speed.

We were all young and immortal then. Autumn sunshine and Longhorn football. Earl and Lam and me.

So very sad that time passes. Even sadder that it passes too quickly and likely painfully for the lightning bolt from Lampasas. I believe he donated his gold medal to the Special Olympics. A generous gift that may have also indicated the young man's dislike of the spotlight.

Johnny Lam Jones, I hope all goes as well as it possibly can for you.

Some time ago after EA went through their O'Bannon suit, I started fucking around with NCAA 2014 and converted all the elite schools into their respective all-time teams. JLJ is one of my 4 starting WR's along with Roy Williams, Mike Adams, and Eric Metcalf.

Really hated hearing that it resurfaced and only hope he was as comforted as possible. Fuck you cancer; you are a diseased whore.

Little known, and unbelievable fact.....we went 22 years without another Kickoff Return TD after Lam Jones in '78.....Victor Ike broke the streak in the 2000 Holiday Bowl.

Prayers. Interesting to some, thalidomide is a great therapy for multiple myeloma.

Wow.  My mom had a dog for a long time that just passed away from bone cancer last Friday.  The day she brought it home it ran around her house doing zoomies or whatever you call it. Fast, fast dog. She named it Lam Lam, after one of her favorite players.

RIP. He was a lot of fun to watch when I was in school at the same time.

Damn he was fast.  Just before my time.  Hook'em and Godspeed, Johnny.

A great fact about his speed:  how many 4x4 relay anchors could go from last to first in the TEXAS state finals?  Holy smokes.

Jones is perhaps best known for his performance as the anchor leg on the 4x400-meter relay at the 1976 UIL Texas state track meet, when he took the baton in last place and passed everyone on a dramatic final lap.

JLJ passed away

The below vid is an additional story of the '76 UIL Track Meet mentioned above.    It contains limited,  grainy footage of the actual race.

A True Longhorn Legend - RIP, Lam.

RIP to a Texas legend.  Thoughts to his family and friends.  Only really know the stories and footage, but my Dad loved that guy.

There was probably no anchors who weren’t  sub-50 seconds, and at least a couple of them were probably sub-48.

True legend.

(It was the 4x440 relay/mile relay back then. I know the video above shows a "1600 m relay", but Texas didn't use meters in '76.)
