So, if y'all are interested, David Simon discusses the "business" side of Hollywood

Featured Replies

I listen to all these musicians and celebs on Rogan's podcast talk about this shit all the time.  Such a shady industry.

"For that matter, I’m for riding around Bel Air and Westwood and Santa Monica in a rental car, running up in the driveways of these grifting motherfuckers and slashing tires.  I’ve got that much contempt for this level of organized theft and for the tone-deaf defense of it by the ATA."

lol

That seems like the kind of thing that someone does because they can get away with it.  They (agents and studios) have created barriers to entry that they hold the keys to and force people to pay the toll to do business.

In a related note, the United Brotherhood of  2nd Key Grip  and assistant Best Boy and Gaffers union will be watching this closely I am sure.

Will be interesting to see if any kind of  real reform happens.

Man, in the whole realm of slimy things Hollywood does I'm not sure that even registers.

I wonder how all these things shake out in new media. One of my daughter's friends has millions of followers on Tik Tok and has an agent.

agency packaging has been going on forever, and used to be (and can still be) extremely helpful to actors/writers less accomplished than david simon.  that's not the issue.  the issue is that somewhere along the way, studios realized they could cut through a lot of the negotiating time and aggravation by throwing some money at the problem.  agencies said yes, but told no one, because, why would they?

one of my projects right now is sitting in the packaging department as we go to talent to attach.

packaging isn't the beef.  the kickback is.  just like it is in a lot of businesses.  and it's legal.
