March 21, 20196 yr I hit college right after punk rock peaked and new wave was being birthed by C-section. An interesting offshoot was not only a 2nd wave of punk but a phenomenon called "college rock". It was largely based in the US and the UK, tended to be regionalized, and shunned most of punk's often put-upon snottiness for a sincerity and devotion to pop structure and melody along with a lyrical earnestness that really hadn't been heard since the mid-60's. What you got? Here's a 1981 live set by R.E.M. Michael Stipe isn't nearly as oblique and afflicted by the mumbles as he was on their early recordings:
