FG didn't write much, but did note that Lee steadily moved up their board all spring...Law didn't have him in his top-100, but FG had him ranked 45th overall:

Houston Astros
Pick Rank FV FirstName LastName Position Age School Strengths
32 45 40+ Korey Lee C 20.9 Cal power, arm, ath
68 HM 35+ Grae Kessinger SS 21.8 Ole Miss def fit, SEC peripherals
Lee is an athletic catcher with power, unusual speed for his position, and a good arm. He also put up big numbers this spring; we moved him up our board a bit seemingly every few weeks. Kessinger walked more than he struck out in the SEC, he’s a middle infield fit, and he’s an obvious swing change candidate, something Houston is good at implementing.

I think he was also the fifth (maybe fourth) highest catcher rated in the draft.  Good catchers are very very hard to come by, so the pick makes sense in that regard.  Plus Lunhow is a damn Jedi mind freak, so we also have that going for us.

Chirinos wasn't thought of highly as a catcher either, but the Astros worked with him on framing. He's not a great thrower anymore (age), but he's still got plenty of power for the position, and Chirinos has a great walk rate as well. Even if his average drops a little, he's likely still going to be a good receiving catcher with a .800+ OPS. If Lee can pair that with his above average arm he should play a long time for the Astros.

That article that went everywhere yesterday talked about how the Astros basically taught Jason Castro how to frame. Took him from being one of the worst catchers ever to one of the best framers in the biz.

So yeah. We don't acquire talent, we develop it. It's fucking sick how great this organization is. Our top four position players are all on the IL and we haven't missed a beat.

It is nauseating how good we are now.

3rd round pick

Jordan Brewer | Rank: 108

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 50 | Run: 65 | Arm: 50 | Field: 55 | Overall: 45

As a high school wide receiver, Brewer drew interest from the likes of Michigan and Wisconsin, but his football hopes evaporated when he dislocated his shoulder as a senior. He slipped through the cracks in baseball recruiting and wound up spending his first two college seasons at Lincoln Trail (Ill.) CC. He has been a revelation after joining the Wolverines as a junior, exciting scouts with his combination of tools and performance while winning the Big Ten Conference player of the year award.

If he realizes his upside, Brewer will have at least solid tools across the board. He has well above-average speed and plus raw power, giving him 20-20 potential. He doesn't try to do too much at the plate, using his combination of a quick right-handed swing and strength to deliver hard contact to all fields.

A center fielder at Lincoln Trail, Brewer has played mostly right field and first base this spring because Michigan had greater needs there. He needs to refine his instincts a bit but he has the quickness to become a quality defender in center when he returns there in pro ball. His arm grades as average to solid and plays up because he makes accurate throws.

Seems we are going after college hitters this draft. Good decision, I think the Astros are going to jettison some upper level hitters pretty soon.

Reed, White, Kemp, Fisher, Straw, Marisnick, Stubbs, Mayfield, Ritchie, maybe a guy like Wrenn, Anibal Sierra (hasn't hit since rookie ball). Not all of those guys are on the 40, but decisions will have to be made soon on them.

all i have is names, sizes, and positions on the first 6 guys, but seems like we're going after some athletes - 3 cf in 6 picks.  this guy matthew barefoot seems to have slipped according to his projections.

maybe they look at jake/springer/reddick in the outfield and like what they see.

Astros draft Texas pitcher Blair Henley in the 7th

He has some nice building blocks. I hope it all clicks for him in the org.

Round 7 (226th Overall) - Blair Henley, RHP, Texas

A product of Arlington Heights HS, Henley was a 22nd round selection of the Yankees in the 2016 draft, but honored his commitment to the Longhorns. In Austin, he started 39 games over his three year career, totalling 173 strikeouts and 96 walks in 220.0 total innings. Unlike some of the Astros’ college selections, it doesn’t appear that Henley was drafted for his performance in NCAA play, though he was a dependable starter for the Horns. As pointed out by Dustin McComas of Orangebloods, Henley is known for his extremely spinny breaking ball:

......................

With a 6’3” frame and high level feel to spin it, Henley checks some organizational boxes for the Astros who likely feel they can unlock some yet untapped potential in the Texan righthander.

So I wonder if Framber or Josh James moves into the rotation. Got to think it's Framber.

It’ll be Framber for Saturday. After that, who knows? With off days next Monday and Thursday, they’ll be able to skip that spot next week.

This is the 2nd time Fisher has DH'd with Brantley in LF.  I don't quite get it.

I don't either, Brantley carries a .994 OPS as a DH.
