Nothing really new here (although I didn’t know Fields was floundering around in the Rangers system now), but the Alvarez deal getting a callout in Rosenthal’s latest column:

An unusual deal that might prove a steal

It’s rare that a team trades a player before seeing him perform for their organization. But that’s what the Dodgers did with Yordan Alvarez just six weeks after signing him out of Cuba for $2 million on June 15, 2016, sending him to the Astros for reliever Josh Fields at the non-waiver deadline.

The 2015-16 international signing period was the last one without a hard cap on bonuses. The Dodgers already were subject to a 100 percent overage tax because they were more than 15 percent over their allotted bonus pool. According to a source, other teams offered Alvarez $1.5 million, but he would not sign unless he received $2 million. It was not a huge sum for a Cuban player at the time — Yoán Moncada, remember, had gone for $31.5 million. The Dodgers essentially said, “Why not?”

Alvarez, then 19, was viewed as a good hitter but poor defender, and some in the industry questioned whether he would develop power. The Astros, working on the recommendation of senior scouting advisor Charlie Gonzalez, did not share the latter concern. They eventually settled on Alvarez as the price for Fields, who had three-plus years of control remaining.

The trade was the last of three the Dodgers completed on Aug. 1, 2016 — they also acquired Rich Hill and Josh Reddick from the A’s and Jesse Chavez from the Blue Jays. Fields held opponents to a .628 OPS during 124 appearances over the next three seasons, but the Dodgers released him in spring training, and he has since bounced from the Brewers to the Rangers at Triple A.

Alvarez, meanwhile, grew into a 6-foot-5, 225-pound behemoth and became the first player to produce seven homers and 16 RBIs in his first 12 games after joining the Astros on June 10. His defense remains a major question, but the Astros are playing him some in left field, trying to determine whether he can at least be serviceable.

Four Astros outfielders — George Springer, Michael Brantley, Reddick and Jake Marisnick — are eligible to become free agents after the 2020 season. Alvarez, then, qualifies as an important part of the team’s future, even if he is mostly a DH. The same goes for top outfield prospect Kyle Tucker, who after a poor April is tearing up Triple A. If the Astros would not trade Tucker for J.T. Realmuto last offseason, they’re probably not going to trade him for anyone.

It’s never too late for ‘Summer of George’ to start

It's still very possible that he could end up with his best season of his career (so far).

Altuve and Bregman have half a season to find their swing, both are struggling

Bregman has a gf I bet, I’ll blame her for his downfall

Judging by his most recent instagram story, this theory may have legs.

He has a gf or something. Some friends have spotted them at a very out of the way place several times before the season started. Same girl every time. This place is in bfe. She’s a very attractive, fit blonde I was told.

that girl from his Instagram fits and her location makes sense for where they were At and she was at the yankees series this past weekend (asking baseball questions she claims)

please don’t turn into Correa 2.0 !!!!!!

WTF ?????? Hell no !!!!!!!!! ::

Carlos Correa said if the fan’s vote him in, his goal is to play in All-Star Game. He’s thrilled with his progress.

Fuck that stupid game. Everyone of these motherfuckers needs to stay home, hydrate, and stretch their hamstrings.

Just a ploy to get more votes. CC loves him some attention and he isn't getting enough right now.

Man I hope that is a publicity stunt to try and get the vote with no actual intent from of Correa actually following through

That mother fucker can’t be bothered to start opening day because he’s not exactly 100%, he better not be seriously entertaining the thought of playing in an exhibition that does nothing to help your team in any tangible way.

Edit: what jkates said. Just saw his post

Yeah just saw this as well.  I want to like Correa, I really do.  But he makes it fucking hard.  Bitch fuck the AS Game.  Get your ass back to the team that pays your ass and worry about helping the 24 other players + coaches +everyone else involved in the fucking club win the motherfucking world series.

God dammit you fucktard.

Correa isn't smart enough for this.  He legitimately would make that his first game back if he could and not give 2 shits if he injured himself again.

Hinch pretty much said fuck that stupid ass idea.

Bregs said in his interview with McHugh on his podcast he was seeing someone, dating back to spring training.

So fucking happy to have George back. Let the summer of George begin

Between Hinch’s pre game interview on the day CC got hurt and this quote, I think AJ might be a little tired of his act as well.

Shut the fuck up, Correa.

At the end of the season, let's not forget the heroic contributions of both Rogelio Armenteros and Reymin Guduan (ERA 11.81, slider exit velocity 97.3mph).

While that’s shitty, I’m not going to be disappointed or complaining when they are amongst the players that need to get fitted for a certain ring

Armenteros and Guduan, that is.

Correa I’m currently on the fence...

My boyfriend's back and you're gonna get in trouble....

did bregs wipe his instagram page?

He only does stories

Might be the game I've looked forward to the most this season. Can't wait to see Springer, Altuve, and Yordan in the same lineup

He only does stories

Not true. He posts a lot of regular pics. But he's definitely wiped almost all of them within the past few hours.

Martin suffers injury

Right-handed pitcher Corbin Martin, the Astros’ No. 4 prospect by MLB Pipeline, is in Houston this week being examined by team doctors after suffering a potentially serious elbow injury during his start Sunday for Triple-A Round Rock against Iowa. Martin was pulled after giving up three earned runs and six hits, while striking out five in four innings.

“He came out and didn’t feel right with his elbow, so we brought him to Houston and he’s being evaluated,” Astros president of baseball operations and general manager Jeff Luhnow said. “We’re currently waiting for diagnosis and figure out what we’re going to do.”

Martin started five games for the Astros earlier this season, going 1-1 with a 5.59 ERA.

Springer make this whole thread blow their load

Well i cannot fap to that

Altuve has got you covered on that front

Good to see Altuve jump on a first pitch like that

Luhnow needs to pay Bregman’s GF to cut him off unless he’s .300 or better.

knowing his first inning issues, guy on 1st with a 3-1 count on the hitter - i was not feeling great.

great play by bregs on the sb attempt.
