It was bigger last year, but seeing bikes on the track and now my son trying to wheelie he’s starting to have fun with it.

Ruben is a badass who rode for Dyno back in the 90's and is going into the Texas BMX Hall of Fame this year.  Cool mofo that rides w/ our crew every now and then.

I have always loved this photo...it's a classic.

King of the Lookback.  I remember tutorials in the magazines and just laughing like I knew better than to even try that shit.  That black chrome was fucking BAD ASS.

Probably a quarter mile or so actually.  We’d ride from left to right on this orientation down split rail parkway to the curve (red circle).  We rented a house around the curve before hillside oak lane. Blue circle was the area I could roam without supervision - although now I think about it I could ride up to the movie theatre too to play video games. So lake creek to just before 183. That pool at Anderson mill park is where all kinds of shit went down.

Killer event!  Hung out w/ some crazy talented dudes, ate some tasty free tacos and saw some mind blowing tricks.  There should be a longer vid at some point w/ some more of the best trick contest, but these were the 3 winners.  White t-shirt guy is an engineer at NASA!

Houston Round Up pics:

This dude takes such great pics.  Some killer rigs there too!

Weird...not sure why that link isn't working anymore...  Still active and public on his page.

That’s a gyro and it allows the bars to spin without restriction of the brake cable.  So when freestyle guys are doing all those bar spins, their bars keep spinning.

When I was 10, I decided to try my hand at BMX racing.  I went out to the track for a practice run and had a good time.  I signed up for a race.  Next thing I know, my old Mongoose's front tire is resting on a rail and I'm crammed between all manner and means of total redneck kids who are about to eat my lunch.  The kid next to me mocks, "Nice bike."  The gate goes down and I come in dead last.  It wasn't for me.  But I feel like I turned out better for the experience.

What's going on with that brake apparatus?  I missed most of BMX, but am pretty familiar with bikes.

That is the bane of my BMX existence. I keep getting bikes with them and I can't get them to work for jack, so I pull them off and run regular cables.  F Gyro Oryg Gyro2....

And F this thread for reminding me that I have a GT to build and need to find some original mongoose forks from the 80s or I will be made fun of at a swap meet.

Never did an official race but we had some amazing trails about a 3 mile ride away next to Towne West Elementary and we made our own in a dried out bayou area on our street. My red and black Schwinn Phantom (what my parents could afford, $169.99 + tax) was good enough for me to get some serious air, but tabletops were about as fancy as shit got back then. I could hang with the locals at Towne West except for this Vietnamese dude named Hong Hay, he was fucking incredible. No one knew how old he was though lol. A simpler time...

My dad helped me build a ramp.  But it was only about a 2 foot rise.  So I moved it to the end of our driveway, which had about a four-foot sloped drop from the level part of the driveway to the street.  I used to go flying off that ramp into the middle of the street.  It was a blast, and it's a wonder I didn't get run over by a car.

Hell yeah! I'd love to have home video of the old BMX exploits. It would be great to show how I got the scars on my shins and elbows 😆.

My ramp eventually suffered this same fate when my mom unwittingly drove over it with her car.  I was so pissed off.

Man, I wouldn't buy anything from that guy right now.  He's been gouging folks for years.  He's still selling cranksets for $500 and had them at $700 within the last year or so.  $280 for a set of forks?  $800 for Chinese made frame/forks?  nah.

I will say that I have several friends w/ 26" Hutch repop frames, and they are pretty cool.  But still - I have a 26" Skyway repop and that f/f only cost me $350.

If you're willing to shell out that kind of cash and maybe wait a bit for it to come in, then more power to you.

Yeah.
I’ve got two 26’s already.  Don’t know that I need another one.

Heh....we never "need" another one, but we all know the answer to the perfect number of bikes in n+1.

I have 3 26" and made an emotional purchase of a 29" frame, so I've been slowly acquiring parts for the build.  Last thing I needed was to spend another $2K on a bike I damn sure don't need.  Will be nice to have a faster rig though.

Anyone do the ride tonight? Tried to talk my wife and 8/yo son to turn back at the mid point around 8:45 but they said they wanted to keep going so we got back to the car around 10:20.

Accurate...I currently have 4, even though my homemade bike rack only holds 3, and have most of a 5th ready to be assembled.

Randy isn't on a BMX here, but he's an OG Austin Cruiser guy.  I do probably 90% of my wrenching and when I can't figure out that last 10%, I take it to him.

So, not at all old school BMX, but more like old man on a BMX-ish bike: Did 5 laps of the veloway this morning, in just under an hour. Avg speed was 16.3 mph

In our social crew rides, we’re typically somewhere around 12mph and in our fast crew rides, we’re around 13.5mph. One of the guys suggested we see if we could break 15mph in a controlled-ish environment. Veloway is 3.1 miles, so our goal was to complete 5 laps in under an hour. I came in at 57min, and I think he was at 54, but he also waited on me the 1st 4 laps - I’d bet anything he could have finished 5 laps in under 45. Took a lot out of me - I’ve been WIPED all day since getting home. Pretty stoked to have pulled that off on a single speed 26” rig.
