That place was great. My father introduced me to it after I spent a night employed by the city a long time ago.

Employed by or a guest of the city?

Let’s get this back on track … Double mashed potatoes and milk gravy without any “medley” of inappropriate vegetables. Richter’s Antler Cafe in Spring Branch.

Junior and I ventured over to the Ozarks east of Tahlequah for some smallmouth bass fishing. This unseasonably cool weather unfortunately turned the fish off and we only caught a couple of small fish.

The proper answer is cream gravy on your CFS and brown gravy on your mashed potatoes (which should always be one of the sides you get with CFS).  You get a bit of mashed potatoes on your fork, then cut a piece of steak and eat the steak and mashed potatoes in the same bite.

I agree that mashed potatoes are better with brown gravy.

Salty Dog in Waco has a pretty damn solid CFS.   Today’s special was CFS with jalapeño cream gravy.    Did satisfy

And some pics of my proper bite method…

It was pretty damn good.  Would’ve been better with diced fresh jalapeños that had time to lightly fry in bacon grease rather than pickled, but the acidity in the pickled added its own nice balance.

Good to know.  I think Georges has the best CFS in town but Salty Dog seems to be a worthy challenger.

I love George’s and have a long history with them, but there are places in town that have better CFS.   George’s has been really damn good for a long time though with CFS.

-Salty

-Griff’s

Really good in their own right are John Lilley’s and Oakley’s (ritz cracker crust is unreal)

My wife likes going to the Blue Dog next door.  Maybe next time I can convince her to get the CFS first before we go next door.

If you’ve never tried it, it’s worth the time and effort.  CFS at the Gristmill in Gruene, TX…

I had a chicken fried pork steak in Corrigan yesterday.  Served from a steam table at a re-purposed DQ ma & pa joint.   I was leery yet hopeful.

Looked just like Plano CFS with a perfect golden brown crust.   It was finominile.

Don’t get me wrong, I like it well enough, but…it’s just Lufkin, so it’s a wee bit backwards at times, especially for a coastal boy.

We have a great place that we don’t plan on leaving for a while, though. At my age, the small-town vibe is just fine for me. Our overhead is low, we travel when we want, it’s a good life. It’ll do until our retirement plans are ready to launch.

I will gladly drive to Corrigan for a worthy CFS, as well, so I am grateful for that tip

When the weather is good and you have a seat overlooking the river it might just be my favorite restaurant in the state.

Anywhere have the ones pounded out so thin that they cover the entire plate?

I’ll re-direct, again, to photos on here from Mary’s.   Just look online.

Mouton's in Cedar Park and Leander is credible.  Still hard to beat whatever Jack Allen's Kitchen is throwing down on any given day.

I don't think anybody has mentioned R&K Cafe II in Hillsboro.  Solid CFS in the old passenger rail terminal north of the courthouse square.  Good food and interesting building.

I have a feeling I will get some blowback in this, but Jax Grill in Houston cooks a solid chicken fried steak.

I think it’s been about a year, maybe a bit more for me. I took my old west daughter there. She likes it because chicken tenders and the toy vending machines. Maybe I need to go back soon.

While I love George's and Sammy, never thought their chicken fried steak was great, preferred the gizzards.  Griff's is great, huge slab of meat, always fresh, perfectly battered.  I usually did greens as a side to balance the onion rings

Man.....hardly a day goes by that I don't miss the saddleblanket CFS at the Brush Country Inn in Riviera.  Covered an entire oval platter.  Fries underneath.  Side salad, with a dressing tree brought to the table.  Two slices of Texas toast.  Eat half for lunch, then save the other half for cold CFS sammich on Texas toast while fishing the next day.

Yep.

Stopped at the Republic Grille in The Woodlands today.  I finally remembered to snap a pic a few bites in.

Why is there so little gravy?

I only put gravy on half of the steak as I took the rest home for tomorrow.

Ok. You should have mentioned your diet in your original post.

Went to Texas Roadhouse last night as wife was wanted CFS,  good Lord, 40% must’ve been crust.  Still good though or hers was anyway.  We have other places, mom and pop places, who serve cfs but they top it with sausage gravy.

wtf ??

you ask for ask for extra gravy on the side

No, they bring the gravy in a separate bowl. I only put gravy on the half I intend to eat. I always ask for some gravy to go as well.

I’ll be impressed if anyone else remembers this one …..

Hungry Jack’s in Victoria

The chicken fried was very good but the gravy was next level. Yellow / golden colored and full of flavor. Back in the old Victoria days, hungry jacks was the only place in town to get appetizers. Their bar was always hopping too

Kinda like Shortstop, there should be a drive-thru gravy place in the parking lot of large stores. Brown, giblet, cream, sausage, yeller, oyster, etc.

Had a CFS from The Dam Grill in Buchanan Dam, Texas yesterday. Not bad at all. Melt in your mouth tender.

Friendly reminder … 26 October is National Chicken Fried Steak Day.  Go forth, gorge, and post pics.  Peppered milk gravy sweats for all!
