If you study cults at the college level in the United States, then Mormonism is usually one of the main topics for the semester. Cult has a negative connotation, but it really just means a group of people that live outside of the norms of society especially religiously.

June 30Jun 30 New shit has come to light... https://ksltv.com/local-news/jake-retzlaff-lawsuit/791607/ Quote A civil lawsuit accusing BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff of rape is likely to be dismissed. Attorneys for both sides filed a joint motion to dismiss the case on Monday. The motion requests that the case be dismissed “with prejudice and on the merits.” KSL legal analyst and Inside Sources host Greg Skordas said this means the case can never be brought again. “It’s just a matter of time before the judge signs it, but effectively this case is over,” Skordas said. There is a fan conspiracy floating around the internet that the female was a Univ of Utah student and this was a setup to get him suspended. In other words, force him to claim the sex was consensual to get him suspended, and now drop the case. Sounds like bullshit, but that would be some next level skullduggery.

All of them that I've attended both public and private, including Baylor (hah), when looking at the history of religion in the United States. It's pretty undeniable that Mormonism was considered an outsider religion that was unacceptable to American society. Americans were not tolerant of other religions, like Catholicism, but not to the extent that Mormanism was to where its adherents were pushed further and further away from "polite society". It's also taught as a way to understand the Americanization of the figure of Jesus (like in Prothero's American Jesus) to where Americans remade Jesus to be more in their image and their ideals with it being an original American invention. Obviously with the expansion of religious pluralism in the United States it has become much more acceptable to non-Mormons to where nobody cares if you're Mormon in 2025. The cultural history and current makeup of Mormonism and its traditions are still based upon that outsider image and the struggles they faced for centuries here.

That's a lot of work to get rid of a mediocre QB at a football program that isn't exactly miles ahead of Utah. Not to mention, that even if BYU suddenly sucked this seaon Utah still has almost no chance of finishing in the top third (or even half) of their conference. Every fan base is delusional.

Mormons are called to serve, and many of them wanna join the Army instead of building houses in Guatemala. Kinda cuts against the stereotype there. As my Mormon buddy says, “We aren’t Amish.”

Many I met were exceptionally civil and agreeable, but I found many of the men very sexist and sometimes quite promiscuous (maybe not so bad for Surly.) Probably no more than evangelical youth pastors.

I had to take a world cults and religions class in college and they were one of the sects I learned about years ago. I find that every single religion has fanatics, but most people are just trying to make it day-to-day and Mormons aren’t any different in that respect.

There are some other branches of government where Mormons are very disproportionately represented; the ones where speaking different languages and having a squeaky clean background get you a good chunk of the way to hired. Mormons also believe that the Constitution is a divinely inspired document. It’s a bit beyond just a penchant for service.

July 2Jul 2 Something that has not been mentioned yet is the very, very close ties between LDS and MLM. They are damn near one and the same. Many of the biggest ones are all based and run by higher up members in LDS. They run a great shell game. Speaking of shell games, cults and areas of specialization, the pure, poorly written fictional cult of Scientology is a massive player in the Hollywood scene. Though most of them honestly pale in comparison to my people's Cathonlic shenanigans. Snake handling rednecks are among the creepiest at a visceral level though. Edited July 2Jul 2 by BurntEyes
July 2Jul 2 It only seems weird because it’s relatively recent. If the story of Jesus was invented today and people started believing it they’d be considered loons too. A baby born of a virgin is human but also god who’se also his father so he’s his own dad but begs himself to save him from execution and denies his own request, oh and he’s also a sacred ghost, and so on and so forth. Christianity was in fact considered a cult for more than 300 years until Emperor Constantine thought it was cool. Edited July 2Jul 2 by 'stache
