Caycee Bregel.

It took a 400-pound pig to tip off cops that an animal rescue home in rural Minnesota had a sick secret: Most of its animals were dead.

Deputies from the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the Minnesota Animal Center in Farmington Wednesday responding to a call about a hog on the loose, running around a yard.

When they arrived at the single-family home that houses the center, they found more than 60 cats and a rabbit were stuffed in a freezer.

“It’s about as bad as you can get,” Keith Streff, a Humane Society investigator, said at a news conference. “It's a catastrophic environment.”

He said that the sheriff’s office issued a search warrant, and that the Humane Society rescued more than 40 cats and five dogs. An investigation into the center is ongoing.

Caycee Bregel, who leases the property and operates the animal rescue, was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty, according to WCCO in Minneapolis. She was released Friday and prosecutors announced she won’t be charged with animal cruelty now.

"We take claims of animal abuse very seriously,” Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom said in a statement on Friday. “Further investigation is needed to determine the cause of these cats’ deaths and who is responsible.”

Bregel’s neighbor Lisa Mason works as a veterinary technician by day. She helped officials with the clean-up and called the living conditions “hell on Earth.”

“There’s feces, urine, just garbage you guys, strewing everywhere. You couldn’t even get in the rooms. There’s cats in the bedrooms with the doors closed,” Mason told WCCO.

FARMINGTON, Minn. — A Minnesota woman who was found to have 64 dead cats, 43 live cats, a 400-pound pig and other animals on her property has been sentenced.

Twenty-five-year-old Caycee Bregel, who ran an animal rescue nonprofit out of home south of the Twin Cities, pleaded guilty Friday to 13 counts of animal cruelty.

Bregel was ordered to serve 200 hours of community service, two years of probation and 90 days of electronic home monitoring. She must also receive a psychological examination.

Court documents say complaints about the pig running loose led investigators to the house. They found numerous cats and dogs in poor health and said they emitted an "overpowering smell of urine and feces." Dead cats were found in shallow graves across the backyard, in freezers and refrigerators, and in the garage.

Some of these rescues get overwhelmed with trying to do too much with too few volunteers.

This was eerily similar to a house we flipped a couple years ago off 2222.  It was the most vile thing I've ever walked into.  Food molded to the counters, animal blood and feces on the floor, counters, everywhere.  Fleas galore.  Neighbor told as a potbelly pig died a while back inside.  (Shudders)

Let's wait on the results of the psychological evaluation before commenting further, OK?  There may be a perfectly sane explanation for this.

Assuming you completely rebuilt the interior (new drywall?), Did it still smell slightly like animal? And do you have to disclose that kind of stuff to the seller?

Were you obligated to tell the buyers about something like this, or is it just between us?

That's a very loose definition of flipping a house then.
