Breaking news - Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on fire

Featured Replies

It is my understanding that the Church that burned is kind of important. It seems restoring it might have some value to society. A few people might even consider it art and of national interest.

Anyone who thinks that Notre Dame is "just a church" has pretty much zero understanding of history, and more importantly, why Notre Dame is one of the fundamental agents that changed human history in just about any way you can imagine.  Yeah, it's that important.  No wait, more important than that.

Church belongs to France. Catholic Church pays to use it.

They probably can pay to restore it, too

Macron says it will be rebuilt within 5 years.

I saw an estimate of 10-15 years for total restoration.

5 years in Metric is about 15 years in Imperial.

I think a lot of people will donate.  I know I will.  I am currently looking at the various ways to donate and trying to pick which one.

I hear Geoff Ketchum has started a fund.

He's the one in Cedar Park, right?

I think the rent is going up.

Their fire insurance policy sure as shit is.

is there any money left in the wreath fund?

Probably not. Dr Drunkenstein is on a beach earning 20%.

I have been and love architectural history. It's is/was an amazing place.

you mean its not a good idea to donate money towards a church that belongs to one of the wealthiest organizations in the world, that also pays no taxes?

The church belongs to France.

If it was terrorism, will France's government admit it?

Probably not.  Word on the street is that Macron is secretly a member of the Muslim Brotherhood.

I'm pretty sure $800 million could save quite a few lives, but you go off king.

Yes, they would love to be able to use it to get the Yellow vests pissed at something else.

but yet you don't think it should be rebuilt?

Well to be fair sandal traffic and donkey carts on 6" thick granite cobbles aren't the same thing as  2,000 HP traffic on a maybe 4" asphalt road way affected by temperature.

It's the soil (black clay).

Our Clay is a ‘white’

Of course it should. I just think billionaires could do better donating to other non profit organizations. Take Bill Gates for example.

I don't know. For all I know these guys already do donate to another organizations. Never mind, probably best for a different thread.

I saw an estimate of 10-15 years for total restoration.  But hey, that is significantly less than the 200 year original construction timeline.

Suck it, Middle Ages!

Just go the "I'll buy 2 or 3 new LV purses/luggage sets" route.  High impact

Will there be a golf tournament?

I don't know if this has already been posted, but I just found this site
(I'm going to wish I never found this because it looks like an awesome timewaster, and I do have some work to do)

It has 360° panoramas of many historical sites (maybe a catalog of World Heritage sites)

Here is the link to Notre Dame (click the arrow in the photo to go to various locations inside and outside of the cathedral)

Yes, but at the awards ceremony you have to stand and listen to Ketchum talk about his life for an hour and twenty minutes.

Donations are now over $1B (I predicted $2B before they slowed down a page or so back).

The whole point of terrorism is that they want people to know it is terrorism. There’s no such thing as secret terrorism.

Orlando Sentinel:

The Mouse is joining in the outpouring of support to rebuild the Notre Dame Cathedral in the aftermath of a devastating fire.

The Walt Disney Co. announced Wednesday it will donate $5 million to the cause.

“Notre Dame is a beacon of hope and beauty that has defined the heart of Paris and the soul of France for centuries, inspiring awe and reverence for its art and architecture and for its enduring place in human history,” the company’s CEO Bob Iger said in a statement.

The Associated Press reported nearly $1 billion has been raised from “ordinary worshippers” to “high-powered magnates around the world” to reconstruct the beloved cathedral.

I remember as a young lad being very disappointed when I learned that the "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" was not about football.

So the question is:

Is this a slavish historical restoration or do they re build using modern technology, materials, and re interpretive design concepts  ?  I'm not really sure I wanna see a Disneyesque recreation. I want to know what's original/old and what's post fire.

The main stone structure seems to have escaped structural failure, but I'm betting the heat has caused undiscovered issues.  What do they do with the roof ?  The long span timbers, and shaped bents needed on that roof aren't just laying around. Where does one source the acres of timber you'd need to reconstruct just the complex roof.

The Pompidou Center is their guide

Doubtful, I hope.  I'd love to see a glass roof.  They'd have made it out of (strained) glass back in the day if they'd had the technology.

Yep.  Glad to hear it, I think it should be more than just that though.

I'll be looking into the competition guidelines.

You know this means that if you decide to join the design competition, you're now obligated to show it to us here on surly.

It needs to be something classically French.  A slender Gauloise, with an orange light at the tip?  A statue of a striking transit worker?  A dropped rifle?

Somebody inform Thujone about this design competition, please.
