April 26, 20196 yr Let me tell you guys something - as a lifelong musician, drummer and wannabe singer and guitarist - Journey rose so above other bands of their era and I'll that it's almost astounding. Power ballads and rock rippers Schon and Steve Smith And the voice of Perry. They werent Genesis or Yes. Or Styx. But they also weren't guns and roses or Def Leppard. I love em. They rocked on a higher level than their peers. They've been reduced, I'm afraid to karaoke go-to anthems, but the their catalog and fidelity is deep. Fight me, I guess?
April 26, 20196 yr Yeah you need to keep your weird-o , perverted, freak problems to yourself. This is a respectable place.
April 26, 20196 yr Author As an aside, my wife and kids are asleep, I have a glass of whiskey at my feet, headphones on, Spotify open and a Les Paul around my neck. So anyway, Journey rules.
April 26, 20196 yr They've been reduced by twice divorced slutty chicks in their 40s/50s. Same with AC/DC, Def Leppard, Lynrd Skynrd, etc. And there's nothing wrong with that.
April 26, 20196 yr Not in my regular rotation, but I enjoy me some Journey from time to time, especially some of the earlier, deeper cuts:
April 26, 20196 yr My first "experience" occurred in HS when I brought my new girlfriend to my house and played Journey's new album "Escape" for her on my admittedly kickass stereo (Advent speakers, Phase Linear amp and preamp, Thorens turntable). That album totally iced the deal. I'm down with the Journey.
April 26, 20196 yr That said, I met the band after Superjam 1980 at Busch Stadium, and in particular now-Austinite Greg Rolie was a dick. I literally just walked up to the stage (10 feet down) after the concert and started chatting up the band. Most of them were cool, especially Steve Smith. Steve Perry and Neal Schon were approachable enough. Greg Rolie knew his shit didn't stink.

April 26, 20196 yr The first concert I saw at the FEC was Journey on their Raised on Radio Tour. Glass Tiger opened. Amazing at 17 to see a band that was obviously in disarray & going through the motions was eye opening. Hard to imagine another band that can conjure up all of the senses associated with an early-mid '80s Camaro than Journey.

Seriously, though, I think a big part of that was incessant airplay on certain stations. Post-disco, I took refuge in punk, new wave, and learning my way around 70s "classic rock," all of which is pretty much objectively better than 70s-80s arena-prog-glam rock. That said, I can generate a tiny bit of nostalgia-like for some of it. Edited April 26, 20196 yr by TwiceHorn

April 26, 20196 yr I’m a fan. Stone in Love is a monster jam. @Digdogger (what happened to him?) once astutely posted in a “Bob Stoops...” thread: “Bob Stoops feels that Steve Augeri is vastly superior to Steve Perry.”

I enjoy bands and tracks from all of the above, but none is "objectively" better than the other.
April 26, 20196 yr My first concert in 83 at the Summit and I've been hooked ever since. No tour this summer, but several shows in Vegas in October.

Guns and Roses is in a different stratosphere than any of these bands. I do think Journey catches more shit than they deserve, though, mostly because they are so played out. They have quite a few great tracks.

Thinks Journey isn't as good as the first three. but better than the second two.

April 26, 20196 yr Jonathan Cane, that sumbitch. He ruined the Babys and then ruined Journey. Fucker.

G'n'R gets a pass from me for their debut + "Spaghetti Incident". Other than that, they got all Axl all the time pretty damn quick.

April 26, 20196 yr Don't stop believin' @ohchaucer Srsly you guys. This should've been the first response.

But yes, AFD on its own puts them above any of the others listed pretty comfortably imo.
April 27, 20196 yr When I was a high school freshman I'd play Escape on cassette in the background when I talked to my chick on the phone because that's the way I rolled

April 29, 20196 yr Journey put out some good stuff, but some absolute dreck as well. And they will never live down the fact that they allowed this video to see the light of day.
April 29, 20196 yr I wonder why Steve Smith gets love for being a great drummer. With all their hits that got millions of hours of airplay, I can't think of one memorable drum part, or even one interesting fill (it was all 4-tom 16th notes).

He never showed what he was capable of doing in Journey. He's really quite a tremendous player:
April 29, 20196 yr Don't Stop Believin doesn't really have a beat, but he tried to create something pleasing for the listener in the background.

April 29, 20196 yr Journey was at their best when Greg Rolle was on board. After that they were just OK.
April 29, 20196 yr Rolie lives just west of Austin. I've heard rumors that he has a local band but I haven't seen many advertised shows. I guess he tours with Ringo now.
April 29, 20196 yr A list of Journey songs that made it to number 1:Boggles the mind don’t it. I think I wore that greatest hits compilation out ten times over. And my favorite one that didn’t make the greatest hits cut:

Cain took them to more of a bubblegum place. However, Neal Schon is probably the most underrated guitarist working. That dude is a legitimate monster.
March 11, 20223 yr HLSR last night... Neal Schon's rendition of the Star Spangled Banner was far and away the best I have ever heard live and for me is only rivaled by Whitney Houston's vocal version. Journey was also a great show as well.
March 11, 20223 yr Didn't go, but looked up the setlist....how you play Don't Stop Believin 3rd? Gotta ramp up for that one man come on
