I think I was at 11 or 12 crowns and looking at another two or three plus some of the old ones rotting out underneath... I went and had all 25 remaining teeth yanked in one marathon day and put 4 titanium screws implanted in top and four in the bottom (called "all on four") and next morning screwed in the newbies. That same day, I ate an apple or three for lunch along with a damn nice Ruben. Never had a second's worth of problems, never looked back, best damn dental decision ever made. I did look like someone who'd been kicked in the face about fifty times by Tommy Nobis - but that only lasted a week or so. What did that cost? I think I'm headed the same way in 5 to 10 years. No amount of brushing or flossing keeps my teeth from falling apart, and my dad was the same way. My smile is fine, but almost everything in the back is crowned, and some of those are starting to need to be replaced, and I'm just about ready to say hell with it, do it all.
May 15May 15 That's exactly the number I had in my head, actually. I mean, if a crown is about a grand a tooth and ya got 32 teeth...

My dad had cataracts and was afraid of walking at night because he was worried about tripping. He finally had them done 2 years ago and he said it was night and day (no pun). He also had his vision adjusted, so he has to wear reading glasses instead of just taking off his glasses to read. Eye related, but this applies to me. I had my eyes checked 1.5 years ago and got a prescription for bi-focals. Whatever adjustment they gave me for reading is already too weak. I'm taking my glasses off again to read. Back to the optometrist I go. So update on my dad. When I went back to see him, I brought several types of food enzymes and told him he to take them to see what happens. My mom made sure he was taking them according to the instructions. Lo and behold, his GI tract has improved a lot. No more diarrhea and he's no longer afraid of shitting his pants when he's out. He's gained a few pounds back, which is awesome. Him and my mom are coming to stay with us for the summer, so I'll try to fatten him up a bit. *** *** On that note, he was hit by a motorcycle a few years ago. The bike spun him around and his head hit the pavement. They did emergency surgery to drain the blood but he lost most of his sense of smell during the recovery. He can only taste sweet and salty, which sucks because he used to savor food. He still likes the texture of a good steak though, so I'll ask my boy to keep making grandpa some kick ass steaks while they're staying with us.
May 20May 20 Oh yeah, couple 3 of those accompanied by 3 fingers of good whiskey, and you’ll be happy as a clam. Will it still hurt? Dunno, but you won’t care.
May 20May 20 I was working on my mower deck this morning. Came in for lunch pain free and fully functional. When I stood up from the table, my right knee hurt like a son of a bitch as soon as I put weight on it. No twist, no pop, no weird bend, just pain. It hurt to walk on it, to bend it, and to straighten it out. It swole up and hurt the rest of the afternoon. I had to sit in my recliner and take acetaminophen. This evening it has loosened up, the swelling is down, and I can move around again. I have no idea why it started hurting or why it stopped. What the hell?

Today I did the after school pickups and the stairs 3-4x. I might have done too much. It definitely hurts worse tonight than it did last night. The swelling. 😂

May 23May 23 It's almost like my body is trying to tell me something as my back went out the last 2 times playing pickup bball. Almost 51 and a eurostep did me in 2 weeks ago and still hurts like hell every morning. Got an MRI for the hell of it and it did not show anything too bad that needed correction. Maybe ill take up knitting

June 12Jun 12 Eye Herp, I have eye herp. Not a thing for only the olds but I'm an old and I have eye herp.This. A few months ago I discovered a small bump on my left eyelid. Had my annual dermatologist screening at that time & she referred me to an ophthalmologist. Turns out it's a backed up lubricating gland.Did antibiotics, ointment & warm compresses for 2 weeks. All that resulted in was the doxycycline knocking down my immune system (which is formally mutant-level strong) so I picked up a head cold. Next step is a procedure next Thurs where they're gonna unblock it. Sounds like they're lancing a zit over my eye.

Sounded like a pretty simple procedure and he came back to work right after it. Hopefully yours will go as smooth. I have RA so my immune system is jacked up. The eye doc put me on a twice daily dose of antibiotics to get this under control. It seems to be working. He liked what he saw yesterday. I have a persistent cough that my rheumatologist is concerned about. I'm going to get a CT scan and pulmonary function tests done in July to see if they can rule out Rheumatoid Lung disease. I was hospitalized with pneumonia 25 years ago and grew up breathing lots of second hand smoke so I could have any number of things bothering my lungs. No need to stress about it just yet. But I still will.
June 12Jun 12 Had a colonoscopy last week, my doc said he took out a couple of polyps but there was one that he couldn't get and that I needed to see a surgeon. So I went to the surgeon and he said these terrible words: "I'd like to take a look at your anus". And boy, did he look. He claimed the probe thing was short but I disagree. It didn't hurt but it was very uncomfortable and I kept feeling like I was about to just unleash a huge turd on this guy. Luckily, we all escaped unharmed.

He also gave me a heads up that he was wiping off the gel. I still felt all weird afterwards but at least he was by the book (as far as I know, I guess).

June 27Jun 27 Knee is feeling pretty good. I've been pushing it pretty hard in the gym so sometimes it hurts but it's all "good pain". I think... Anyway, I realized my eyesight was going to shit when I basically failed my eye exam getting my real ID (she passed me and told me to get my eyes checked). Went to the eye doctor and yep my eyesight is definitely going to shit. I don't want to have to wear glasses everywhere so I also ordered contacts. They came in and this morning I had contact lens school with someone at the office showing me how to put them in and take them out, etc. The only problem is that everything is massively blurry when I have them in. I was only supposed to wear them 4 hours today and I kept thinking it was my brain and/or it was due to the general eye trauma of sticking my fingers into my eyeballs so much trying to get them in the first time. It never got better.. Something is fucked up. I could hardly read my phone with them in. Close, medium, far... Everything blurry. And yeah I'm sure they were facing the right direction. Not great. I guess I'll try again tomorrow and call the office on Monday if it doesn't get better. Getting old sucks.

I had to reverse the curve on them to see correctly. They came out of the case like this "(" but should have been like this ")". If you look close at the edges you see which way they should go.

I watched her peel the lid off of the separate containers that they came in with R and L so I hope so. And yeah I'm pretty sure they were not in backwards. She showed me how they cup up differently when they're backwards and not only could I see the curvature but I don't think this was her first rodeo. Maybe I'll mess around with them later and try reversing the eyes and the polarization. And can gouge my eyeballs some more.

June 28Jun 28 I got bifocal contacts. Still struggle at times putting them in since I don’t like jamming things in my eye either. I despised carrying around readers.

June 29Jun 29 Popular Post 54 years old. Had my annual physical last week including the typical blood tests, except my doctor asked if I wanted to also try a new test for markers of Alzheimer's/dementia since I've had memory issues the past several years. About 8 to 10 years ago I had an MRI on my brain and it showed cerebral atrophy at an advanced level for my age back then, but my neurologist retired a couple of months later and things didn't seem to be getting any worse, so I didn't do pursue it any further. Anyway, a day or two after my physical, my doctor's nurse calls and says test results are normal-ish, but the typical "lose weight, eat better, exercise" routine they say every year. So I think, that's that, see you next year. Then Thursday night at 8:38, my doctor, not his nurse, calls to talk about the other test, which frankly, I had forgotten about. He goes on to explain that my results were a bit "outside of the normal range" and that he's going to find a new neurologist for me to start the process to understand how far along I am. So basically, as he explained it, at this point, it's not so much will I get it, but when will I develop it, if I haven't already. I have noticed that it's a lot more difficult to focus on stuff at work and keep my thoughts organized, but it hasn't been at an alarming rate. I just figured that it was because as I age, my give a shit has naturally decreased. I've been trying to process everything and I'm lost, frankly. I feel fine. Don't notice too much different honestly. But the idea that I don't know how much of a future I'll have, is messing with me. It's not like it's an aggressive cancer diagnosis, but it's still a horrible way to go out, and I certainly don't want to be a burden to anyone. I know that at this point, having not seen a specialist yet, I'm kinda putting the cart before the horse, but I keep thinking that life as I know it is about to be over. I'm not afraid of death, but I don't want a prolonged, drawn out demise that's miserable for everyone involved. That leads to some really dark and also ridiculous thoughts. I'm a planner. I plan everything out. But all of the sudden, that seems useless. Edited June 29Jun 29 by Hairy Biped

I plan everything out. But all of the sudden, that seems useless. My dad and his dad passed from Alzheimer’s complications, and one of my uncles has it too. I’ve resigned myself that I’ll have it too if I live long enough. When he had prostate cancer treatment in the early 2000s, my dad filled out a values statement and said that if he ever got Alzheimer’s, he wanted to go out like an Eskimo—just wander out into a blizzard and not come back. Similar sentiment which you are expressing. The last ten years of my dad’s life were intensely sweet and enriching to everyone around him. The love my mother showed him in caring for him was like nothing I could imagine. Young lovers sometimes say “I want to grow old with you,” but they don't have the faintest clue what that means. My mother and father lived it, a declining life of devotion to each other. Some of the best memories in my life are slow walks around the block with my shuffling dad in the last year. He wasn’t able to form sentences anymore but it was a period of intense love. He’d stop and look at every airplane and helicopter overhead. We shared that time, that space, and it was a gift. I’m eternally grateful for that season with him. It can be sweet, for you and especially for those around you. Accept it for what it is, and help others to do the same. There are things like diet, exercise (particularly strength training), and mental games (learning and playing music, learning a new language, doing crosswords and sudoku, etc.) that can help slow the decline.
June 29Jun 29 There are a number of supplements too that can help. Deep dive into it - legit research - vit D (like 90% of us have a deficiency and it has remarkable neuroprotective qualities), and others. None will cure but along with all the other stuff they could slow it down. I take half a dozen if you count omega-3, D and B. There are some obscure ones too I found recovering from some neurological injuries from Covid - TUDCA and alpha lipoic acid that have significant anti-inflammatory, oxidative relief properties and other neuroprotective qualities with respect to degenerative neurological conditions. Give them a look. Anyway, Godspeed to you my friend. I wish you longer health span than you could ever expect under these circumstances. Edited June 29Jun 29 by troph
