I’m pretty sure the forces ready to obliterate OBL were ordered to stand down prior to his escape. Draw your own conclusions on why

Infighting between CIA and DOD. As far as I recall, the former was in position but needed DOD bodies… Rummy said no cause he was salty that Bush let CIA run the show. Airstrikes was the only option given, so we put together the biggest air mission since WW2 and, despite the boom boom, OBL got away.

So Trump intentionally didn’t tell top congressional Democrats, especially those on Intel, before the strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. But he made sure to let congressional Republicans know beforehand.

DOD reports 14 GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators (MOPs) dropped, so close to the entire stockpile used in this operation.

#1926

I'd guess there was probably a discussion with Trump where he wanted to use tactical nukes and they convinced him 14 bunker busters would be the equivalent--and he'd be dropping the biggest bombs since Hiroshima. I have in mind, he had to be talked out of tactical nukes and given an equivalent toy to play with--like switching out toys with a child.

Operation Midnight Hammer? Trump must’ve asked Melania what to call it while she was thinking about her  lSecret Service dude.

This is probably the least surprising aspect about this whole thing.

I was going to go off on a rant chastising the few Trump supporters, in their abject mediocrity, who still post on this particular forum…but I stopped when I had to remind myself “that’s a harsh insult to the concept of abject mediocrity.”

This is correct. The documentary on OBL on Netflix was outstanding. They had most of the key people involved with getting Bin Laden on the program to comment on what happened. Because the CIA had been in charge of getting OBL (because Rummy told Bush it would take months to get people on the ground chasing OBL, so Bish said fuck it and told the CIA to go immediately), when they found him in Tora Bora there were only 4 US people there to get him, against over 1000 OBL soldiers. They tried to call in DoD, but because Rummy had a sandy vagina he he refused to help them to that point. It shows what a disaster Rummy was, but it also showed how Bush didn’t foresee that issue and nip it in the bud early. Huge mistake.

They're questioning the wrong people. Ask Netanyahu, as he is effectively in charge of American operations in the Middle East now.

Only Trump had the guts to do this, after Israel took complete control of the skies over Iran, and crushed Hamas and Hezbollah, and tricked him into doing it.

That's a question I keep asking myself. What are Bibi's next moves? He hasn't been shy since the outset about his desire to see regime change in Iran. Hell, the Israeli operation was code-named 'Rising Lion,' which seems to allude to the old Iranian flag of the Shah.

So, is he dead set on continuing to bomb Iran in the hope of toppling the regime, or does Israel just continue with tit-for-tat shit until one of them gets tired?

I wonder if Israel thinks they can trigger an internal uprising in Iran?  Damage the power structure enough that the younger generations see an opportunity?

I think this is their hope. But it never works like that. You bomb someone and then they drop their focus (temporarily) on internal enemies and jointly focus on the external enemy.

Yes, since the Israeli attacks on Iranian military heads, Netanyahu has publicly called for the people to overthrow the government.

We've had a long back-and-forth argument on the topic over in DT with, as I'm sure you can imagine, many arguing all the various risk factors of toppling the regime (e.g., internal power struggles between the mullahs, the IRGC, the "street," breakaway regions, various ethnic groups, etc.) being reminded by one side of the debate, and the other side calling them racist for not believing that Iranians are capabable of handling their internal business.

Of course, the Kassandras amongst us were not suggesting that Iranians aren't capable, but that shit has a tendency to spin out of control in power vacuums, regardless of ethnicity. It's basically the same belief as was held going into Iraq that we'll be "greeted with flowers", but this time we might not even be present for the fireworks show -- just watching from afar as Iranian society collapses.

Obviously, there's no guarantee that any specific result occurs, no matter how desirable or destructive, but weighing the potential risk factors is apparently a real no-no. For my part, I hope it works out fine, but I do have strong doubts, given all the players involved in Iran, Israel, the US, and elsewhere.

One thing I tracked in a previous decade was how Cheney used the briefings he did for the Gang of Eight to claim that people like Nancy Pelosi had approved various wars or torture or surveillance operations. That was dishonest (bc we learned they all pushed back). But remarkably effective.

Trump doesn't have that now. And however much you hate Schumer's statement, Schumer made it clear that he had not approved. Himes and Warner made it even more clear. Admittedly, in the short term, Trump doesn't care. But he won't have that tool in the long term, if and when things go south.
