Went to Shaya last week... feels like it's fallen off a bit. I'd recommend MaMou, which was the best meal of the trip. You need a reso, but you can make one for the bar. Great food/service/vibe.

Thanks, will look into. Friend of mine also just recommended Dakar. Looks awesome. My only hesitation is the non-refundable $200 charge at time of booking

I have a solo dinner night in New Orleans in late October. Looking for recs for upscale/upscale-ish place (preferably with dinner service at a bar/counter seating, tho not a must). Thinking something like Shaya or R'evolution, but those are pretty established now so wondering if Surly has any other recs.

Maybe 20 years ago I went to Nola with three degenerate friends who spent so much time and money that day in the hustler club that they started bringing out free food to our table. I gotta say, I’ve had worse meals.

Shaya was canceled years ago and Revolution is irrelevant. Get a rez for Saint Germain, the most ambitious restaurant in the city, or Saffron or Mamou at the bar. Or if you want to go old school, Clancy’s at the bar. Make friends with Garth. Peche at the bar remains fantastic. Nowadays that is my rotation when I go home. Have only been to Dakar in his earlier, much more casual iterations but really enjoyed it.

Saba is Alon Shaya’s replacement for Shaya.  It’s great and I would definitely recommend.

Thanks for the recs. Nothing available at Mamou and only a 9:30 at Saint Germain, so decided to go with 8pm at Dakar. Will see if I can squeeze in a second meal on Sunday.

I had dinner at Gianna last night. It was fantastic. The place had a great ambience as well. It’s an Italian place, so it’s probably not on the foodie list of places to go. But if you are in NO as often as I am, it’s nice to have some options other than “Louisiana” food.

My wife and I always stay in that area at the Hotel Fontenot, and we walk by Gianna all the time. But unlike New York, Chicago, or San Francisco, we never think to go to an Italian place in New Orleans, which is probably silly. I do like Link’s restaurants, so maybe I’ll give this a try.

I could easily eat 8-10 servings of the oysters with brie from Clancy's.

Clancy’s screwed up our reservation on Thursday because of event related shit. Anyone got a can’t miss place that isn’t seafood that might have something available on short notice?

If you like Indian, I would try Saffron.  We had one of the best meals we've ever had in New Orleans there.

Coincidentally, we're booked there Fri night. Looking forward to it.

Anyone been to Palm and Pine? Going there Saturday for the 1st time, heard good stuff about it.

Gianna was mentioned upthread, good spot.

And we haven't been recently but La Petite Grocery might also fit the bill. Was excellent when we went and they have a lot of non-seafood options.

I haven’t been there, but Nirvana was pretty good as well. I ate there with several Indian colleagues that said it was as good as they get back home.

Had dinner at La Petite Grocery tonight. Jesus Christo. I can still taste the seafood stew broth, and it’s damn glorious.

We went there on our last trip to New Orleans a year ago, and it was fantastic.  Cocktails are also awesome.  Would go again.

Been there multiple times and it will always be in consideration every time we go.  As Hate indicated above, there's a thought of "why Italian in New Orleans," but the turtle bolognese at La Petit slaps very hard.  Also, I agree with you on the seafood stew.  It rocks.

Saffron has an Indian beer that is also fantastic.  It was very similar to a kolsch.

I can’t bring myself to go for Indian when only in NOLA for short stints. Clancy’s ended up figuring some things out and we’re in on Thursday.

Haven’t been to New Orleans since the Sugar Bowl. Staying at Hotel Monteleone for the first time in years. Should be fun. Hitting La Petite for brunch on Saturday. GW Fins, Clancy’s, Peche at night.

They have a Nola flair.  We had chargrilled oysters there that I would put up against any in the city.

Yeah I don’t think it’s fair to call Saffron simply Indian. It’s in the genre of “New Orleans restaurant”, not just in the Creole influence in its cooking but in that it’s the kind of restaurant that only kind of makes sense in New Orleans. Sort of like how Clancy’s would just feel out of place in Houston.

You know what really makes sense in New Orleans? Luizza by the Track. I was there a couple of weeks ago and the bbq shrimp poboy was transcendent.

The fried oyster was absolutely fantastic as well. Flawless execution on a classic.

Finally made it there in May and I think that's my new favorite poboy place now.

I forgot to mention that I ate at Meril's during my last trip to NO.  I was there with a co-worker and we ordered a bunch of appetizers.  We had the pocket bread, yellowfin tuna bundles, meatballs, dumplings, and scallops.  Everything was really good, but the tuna bundles were fucking phenomenal.  I'll be in NO for quite a bit to begin the new year. I'm staying in the Warehouse District which I really like.  I'm looking forward to getting to know that area.

My wife took us to Jewel of NoLa over the summer and I'm still pissed at how awful it was and how much it cost. It is New Orleans. How do you pick a bad restaurant?....apparently their bar is awesome...but did we go for a drink? No. I'm still not convinced the food wasn't some kind of joke on tourists.

Other than this poor decision my wife is a lovely woman and also took us to Mamou which was lovely.

Jewel of…the South? That’s a skill issue. Chris Hannah is, no exaggeration, one of the best bartenders in the world and a great all-around dude.

Got Bacchus coming up. Hit me for Saturday night eats. Finn’s…..not happy with me from last year. Was too complimentary. Let’s go

I was told that they got their award for the bar after leaving. I ordered a generic martini at dinner because I wasn't sure what was going to go with my tripe. I recommend going for just a drink if you go at all. Apparently, the bar is good.

You went to Jewel of the South, one of the best cocktail bars in the southern US, and ordered something you could make at home? Their current cocktail menu is tits

Like I said, 6 months later and my wife is still in the dog house for not getting the details right. My opinion of the food stands. I'd call it tripe but they literally have tripe on the menu so I think that is what they are going for.

Missed a lot of this thread, probably said several times but will reiterate that Irene's is a great dinner spot for Italian fare.

Going to Commander's Palace for the first time in a few weeks, I'll report back.

Irene's is my favorite spot in NOLA.  I haven't been in a while, so I've been lurking in here for some pics.  I hope someone hooks me up soon.  Thanks for bringing it up.

Poboy spots in Uptown or the Garden District?

Going in a few weeks and staying around St Charles & Jackson.  Plan to explore that area more than on my previous trip.  I'd made a note to get to Parkway, but figured maybe there's something better more out of the way and less known on that side of town.

EDIT:  shit, any Uptown/Garden recs would work, really.

Was back in town for the holidays and did a solid po boy tour. Parasol’s remains tops for roast beef. Mahony’s, which used to suck, was recently purchased by the group that owns Sylvain and the Chloe. They claimed to improve quality - even using Duong Phong bread for a minute - but my shrimp was dry. Guy’s is the best for shrimp anyway (uses a cornmeal matter). Casamentos serves an oyster loaf, which is technically not a po boy but IMO the buttery toast is a better vessel.

Oh, and if you are staying off Jackson, you should check out Stein’s, the sandwich king of New Orleans.

Guy's on Magazine is still my fave. Domilise's is also very good.

Thanks!  Guy's and Domilise's both came up in my Google exploring and looked legit.

This is on my list for our next visit - Cafe Reconcile

Online reviews look good and the mission is great.  You might give it a try and report back.

I haven’t been in years and need to go back. The new-ish chef was at Sylvain for a long time and earned several James Beard noms (and is a great person), so I’ve got to imagine the program is as good as ever.

I second Parasols for the roast beef.  I'm not a huge fan of the atmosphere at Domilise, but the poboys are damn good.

The best poboys I've had in years were at Liuzza by the Track, when I was there a couple of months ago. It's not in the Garden District, but well worth the 15 minute uber to the Fairgrounds. BBQ shrimp poboy is the GOAT for me, and their other poboys were incredible as well.

Liuzza getting a lot of love upthread too.  Checked them out on Google.  Looks legit.

We fly in on Wednesday the 29th at 1:15 and the wife wants to do a haunted tour thing in the Quarter that night (think we're scheduled for 8).  Seems like checking into the hotel and grabbing an uber up there for a late lunch before drinking in the Quarter prior to the tour would be a good plan to kick things off.

Edited by Al_4_ISU

I should note that there are two Liuzza’s: one on Bienville and the one “by the Track”. They have absolutely no relation to each other. The former is more of an Italian spot and the latter gumbo-and-po boys, but they tend to be compared not just because of the name thing but because they are two of the best casual spots in Mid-City. One of my favorite scenes in Tremé is when John Goodman has his final meal at By the Track (BBQ shrimp and two Ambers). The guy next to him remarks, “You know, some say the one on Bienville is better”, to which he responds, “The Pope in Avignon!”.

I’m a big fan of Liuzza’s on Bienville too but I understand they are under new management. Not as much of a poboy place but love those schooners of beer and killer food too.
