Nice get... #1 JUCO ILB...

Makes the ILB position a bit deeper, but not at the cost of grabbing a body to just be a body

Given that he's technically a 2019, he should have been classified with Caleb Johnson and Lakia Henry.

EDIT: Looks like the reclassification has scrambled their rankings - his 3-star ranking went away. Probably the #BOMC at work tbh.

This staff is tireless in their efforts to fill out a roster. Nice pickup , takes the sting of losing (seemingly) the CA LB out a bit.

They played Indy this past season, maybe he’ll get some brief highlights on Last Chance U.

When Auburn won their title, Chizik had several dudes like this on defense.  I like it that we are filling needs with good players.

So which LB position is he most likely competing for.... and what's the current projected depth chart there before he arrives??

He's slow - if he's playing Rover something's gone tits up.

Somebody explain why he is 2019 and not 2020. (I haven’t been following this one very close). If he is 2019, why wasn’t he part of the recruiting madness back in Feb? I’ll hang up and listen.

To be fair, the rankings services don’t seriously rank JUCO guys until shorty before they sign, so if he’s enrolling earlier than expected, none of the services have probably given him a very serious eval yet.

Mac. He’ll be competing with Adeoye unless Caleb Johnson or Overshown take over Rover and Shark gets bumped to Mac.

He was a full qualifier out of HS, so he can enroll earlier (after one year) than a non-qualifier because he doesn’t have to get his associate’s degree to be eligible.

@Burt Macklin, Boyd seems to think he's quick, so he really must be slow af

How he fits at Texas: Mitchell is a gifted plugging, inside-backer. He reads his keys and moves very decisively and downhill in the run game, filling windows at the line of scrimmage and arriving with force. In coverage and in space he obviously has some lateral quickness but a lot less tape and probably some learning to do while his blitzes are forceful and effective. In a scheme that can protect him from overexposure in space he fits the bill for a Big 12 ILB with the quick reads and lateral quickness that generally matter more in today’s game than size and power. Reminds me of guys like Tom Wort or Arthur Brown and would fit at Mac for Texas. – IB

Ha. Good ole Ian. Praises his lateral quickness but at the same time calls him a "plugging, inside-backer" and says he'll have to be schemed to avoid "overexposure in space."  He should be solid inside the tackles, but will likely struggle if he takes a false step or is slow to read the play or when he gets isolated in space on a skill player, which will happen at times because Big 12.

EDIT: Here's what Roach said on Mitchell, pretty much the exact opposite of lateral quickness.

"Areas for improvement: Mitchell is somewhat limited athletically, and he appears to struggle with changing directions quickly. He runs well when he reaches top speed, but his lateral ability is lacking."

So, now we're airbrushing our player's publicity shots?

The real question is why was there ever a time when we didn't?

This one looks particularly bad.  Makes me think he has tattoos of naked women romancing each other all up and down his arms.

Honestly the dude does have very smooth arms (well that's not a sentence you type everyday)

Welcome Double Ju!

I'm glad to see us get an LB after we realized that there would be more injuries to deal with than original anticipated.

Commitment analysis from Darius Terrell:

What is Texas getting in Mitchell?

Ranking: 3-Star (247), 3-Star (Rivals), Unranked (ESPN)

Top Offers: Since November 2018, Mitchell has committed and de-committed from both Rutgers and Minnesota before ultimately ending the process as a member of the Longhorns’ 2019 class after also visiting Arkansas late in the process.

Size: 6’2 225lbs

Projected College Position: Inside Linebacker

Comparison: Anthony Wheeler (Texas 2015-2018)

Analysis: The first thing that I notice about Mitchell in his clips is the result of the impact that his collisions cause on his targets. When Mitchell finds the correct gap, he fills it violently. Much like recently departed Longhorn LB Anthony Wheeler, Mitchell is a guy that is clearly at his best and most comfortable moving forward and attacking the LOS. It is difficult to tell how well he reads from highlight clips, but he does a nice job of sniffing out several counters on tape. I think that he moves pretty well, he’s just not nearly the twitched-up athlete that fans may have gotten used to recently, such as Malik Jefferson and Gary Johnson. Mitchell provides Texas with some immediate insurance for the loss of De’Gabriel Floyd and adds some much-needed depth in the LB room. At the absolute worst, Mitchell is candidate to be an immediate contributor on Special Teams and will have four years to play three seasons at Texas. He will be a true Sophomore next season.
