Our basketball “fans” suck. Y’all are on here shitting on a coach that was far and away the best we’ve ever had here. It’s not even close. Did the end of his tenure suck? Sure it did. But he put us on

I would be half as happy for a Barnes title as I would be for a Texas title. I really liked and respected him. It was obviously time for him to go as things had run its course at Texas- but the way he

  • Hard to hate Barnes. He is the best coach in our program's history. I don't fault Patterson for forcing him to make staff changes. We were underachieving given the program's resources. But it spe

Barnes also finished second in National Coach of the year voting.

Good for him.  I really enjoyed his one-and-dones in the tournament more than Shaka Smart's,  because we had more talent.

Rick was not awful. Say what you want about his dalliances with co-eds, but that motherfucker could recruit for his system. Sure, the end wasn't great but that guy got us on the map. It's our own incompetence that has squandered the foothold he carved.

Remember when George W Bush was president?

That was the last time Rick Barnes made the sweet 16.

Who is the only person to hold Jordan under 30 points a game? Dean Smith

Who is the only person to hold KD under 30 points a game? Rick Barnes

he most definitely wasn't awful, but he was definitely an unlikable asshole his last 3-4 years and that's 100% on him.

it's also the reason he's not as fondly remembered as his record suggests he should be.

I was wondering where the Derka NSAA thread was.

So the Vols are currently the title holders for both the "Keys of Life" and the "Winners of Life"?

Yeah KD really struggled under Barnes.

Ivy Snow would be a nice addition here.

John Wooden + "integrity".  LOL.  That fucker was as big a beneficiary of bought players as Calipari.

You see he taught them how to tie their shoes at the first practice of every season.

ESPN has Tennessee ranked 8th heading into next year. They definitely need to add piece or two (some big men would be nice) but if they can shoot and defend the way they did this year they’ll be ok.

Damn, I just read that Tennessee doesn’t have a single commit from the c/o 2018 because they return essentially everyone. The latter I knew, but the former is surprising. I have to assume they’ll be in on a grad transfer or two.

Could you maybe migrate to the Tennessee fan forum, please?

I’d take him over Shaka at this point
Charlie Strong sucking didn't make firing Mack Brown a bad decision.

How many top 4 finishes did Rick have?

This feels like one of those cases where nobody realized how good Tennessee was until the very end of last season, and now they’re over-correcting and putting lofty expectations on a college team with no future NBA players and no incoming freshman class. I think a top 15 season would be great, and no sort of underachievement at all. It will be interesting to see Tennessee with a target on their back from the get-go. I think they have the mental toughness to handle it, I just don’t see them as a top 5 team.

Sports Illustrated with some info on the deal: (on the link)

I'll pull for Rick Barnes anytime he's not playing Texas. The end of his tenure was a fiasco, but he put together a respectable run and his replacement is raking in $3 million yearly for one and dones and a .500 record.

he looks pretty damn good. this is some impressive film:

he's big, he can shoot, he can finish at the rim, he can pass, and he actually seems to try defensively. that's a good looking prospect right there.

Supposedly a Duke lock.  That’s a good get if true.

Tennessee tips off at 6 tonight against Rick's alma mater Lenoir Rhyne, on the SEC Network. Tennessee opens the season ranked 6th in the country.

this post should probably go here too:

I think that Tennessee could be ranked a bit high,  but their ceiling is definitely final four caliber. If they can simply get repeat performances from Schofield and Williams (never mind if either one improves) they're off to a great start. It's a deep team that shot lights out last year, and if they do that again then they will be real contenders this year.

Their guard trio (Bowden, Turner, and Bone) is really good, and they have plenty of role players on the bench. They'll play Gonzaga and probably KU in the early season as well as Louisville, WVU (Big XII vs SEC), and obviously UK twice, so they'll have some good tests throughout the season. Plus the SEC is no longer a total joke of a conference, so they'll have every chance to earn that ranking. Should be a really good team though.

My biggest question is how they handle have a total 180 on expectations this year. Last year they were picked to finish 13th in the SEC and they won the league and finished as a top 10 national team. This year have their highest ever preseason ranking. I like the makeup of this team, both skill wise and mentally. It has the potential to be one if Rick Barnes best ever teams, even up there with his 2003, 2006, and 2008 Texas teams. Should be a fun season.

No Lamonte Turner tonight but Vols up 50-30 at the half, scoring 24 of the final 30 points in the half.

  • Author

I change the channel from Texas being down 18-16 at the under 8 TO to see that Tennessee has opened the second half on a 19-0 run over the first 9:45 of the half. sigh.

50-30 at half, now 82-35 with less than 5 minutes left and all backups in. wow.

  • Author

interesting. switch it back over and the starters are back in with ~3 minutes to go.

That is weird. Guess Rick was unhappy with the backups and wanted to make a statement? Gotta be careful with that, though.

Anyway, hope he has a great season and proves the haters wrong.
