May 28, 20196 yr Zeppelin I. Do I really need to show my work? Blew the doors off, at the time. Still holds up.
May 28, 20196 yr Author I think I’m going with Boston - total unknowns, no industry experience, homeboy invents and builds his own gear, engineers and records it himself, writes hella fantastic songs that will be staples of classic rock until the end of time, was like nothing ever heard at the time, and the damn thing just sounds fantastic. To me this album is like hitting a walk off World Series winning grand slam in your first at bat.
May 28, 20196 yr I know we had a thread of this before, but I like all of these and you can’t tell me different. And a little bit of a screwball:
May 29, 20196 yr There was a great San Marcos band many years ago that I had the honor to work with named Hognose. I recorded and mixed two of their albums, both of which were released on the record label I co-owned. Their first album, Longhandle was one of my absolute favorite sessions as a recording engineer. I don't feel I did them justice, but did the best I could with the less than great gear I had. Honestly, in a car, cranked up like it is supposed to be heard, the albums sounds pretty damn good. They had the Texas stoner rock meets melvins vibe and were genuinely great guys. That album had a lot of great tracks such as "14 Wide", "Get Your Hands Off My Neck" and my personal favorite "Fountainhead". 99% of y'all have never heard of these guys, but I figured I would throw out a first album that was a favorite for me on multiple levels.

Nothing has been that close since for me, REM's Murmur would be my next choice.
May 29, 20196 yr Just now, Patricio Swayze said: We need an unpopular music opinions thread. I can’t stand Boston. After the first album they did nothing, but that first one stands on it's own, personal taste aside.
May 29, 20196 yr Gish by Smashing Pumpkins. Maybe because it hit me in my formative years, but that album just blew my mind with how hard it rocked. Daydream is probably the only throwaway song, and it’s at the end of the album.
May 29, 20196 yr In my time, listening to AM radio under my covers when my parents thought I was asleep -- the musical "porn" of the day -- I have to go with Boston. But I'll be damned if I didn't "discover" a shit ton of bands thanks to low-reach FM radio college radio stations of the day.
May 29, 20196 yr Mine would be Boston for many of the reasons tbone listed. I always liked that Scholz did it his way. The ridiculous vocals of Delp. I wish Scholz weren't such a perfectionist so that they might have produced more albums early in their careers. I like their second album as much as the debut. Both terrific albums. The second a little harder/louder. Onboard, REM's Murmur was great. Catapult is one of my favorite REM songs.
May 29, 20196 yr Boston is hard to top but for pure "holy shit what is that" debut. I'm going to have to go with Are You Experienced(US Version). Play that front to back at 11 even now and then remember it was 1967.

May 29, 20196 yr Amazing debut which is also a perfect album in my opinion. Wire’s 1977 debut, Pink Flag. Black Flag’s debut studio album (several EPs came out before), Damage from 1981. Pivotal album for punk and hardcore.
May 29, 20196 yr In terms of historical significance and cultural impact, I'm not sure this one can be topped.

May 29, 20196 yr Boston, Van Halen 1, GnR Appetite for Destruction are all great ones. I figured this one would already be listed since there is a The Cars thread, but I'll go ahead and put this one out there:
May 29, 20196 yr Not the greatest debut albums, but these both came out around the same time in 1986, and with all the over-processed, impersonal crap coming out at that time, it was like "whoa, this is... different, and real". Funny, ordered both of these from Columbia House, the Steve Earle for my wife, who was more into country (or at least 80's country) and the Georgia Satellites for me, and we wound up trading, I wore that Steve Earle tape out.

May 29, 20196 yr Good one. Also this one: I thought of putting both that and AM in here, but both albums were the work of seasoned songwriters/recording artists.Counting Crows “August & Everything After” belongs in this thread

Wilco got better, Son Volt did not.
May 29, 20196 yr Onboard said Boston went off like a bomb in '76. GnR's Appetite was similar. I remember hearing guys talking about it in '87 as they were touring for the album, but it exploded in summer '88.
May 29, 20196 yr Apetite for Destruction is an excellent pick, in my opinion. It is also my opinion that if I never heard Boston again, I would be better for it.
