Shitty weather, but fantastic start for Villa. OG from Spurs defender ... But to be honest, would've been a tap-in for Villa if he hadn't.

What a strike... So Alderweireld scores at both ends.

Fun match so far.

VAR got both calls right (1st no penalty, 2nd penalty). But that first VAR process demonstrates the problem with the EPL implementation. They should have stopped play immediately instead of waiting almost 2 minutes to review the call.

When I saw the lineup Mourinho rolled out, I figured Spurs were going to look poor. A Dier/Winks midfield has been poor for years.

Ramjet right now:

That said - they got the call right, if they can fix the process, VAR will be fine.

That said, I expect the EPL to get rid of VAR next year.

Too many problems with var imo. Got this one right but overall it’s bad. I’m willing to put up with some missed calls then to love with the downside.

Honestly not arguing the call (it was a penalty), but the process. Should have stopped play immediately if they were reviewing.

Had Villa countered with a goal against the run of play, then the VAR called a halt 2 minutes after the foul and that hypothetical goal, the Holte End would have gone insane.

Fix it or dump it.

Current incarnation sucks and is ruining the game.

Needs more fraction of an inch offsides checks IMO.

I would argue it’s just the FAs implementation. Other leagues work well. I just think the FA has gone out of their way to make their implementation suck as much as possible.

They've succeeded.

But only at the last fucking second.

I have to admit, when I saw that goal go in my first thought was "oh fuck, Ramjet".

Fucking Villa.  I hope you get relegated for costing Chelsea two more points for our fourth place cushion.

Not defending the FA or their implementation of VAR, but that's a common myth from people that only/mostly watch the Premier League, myself included. I heard a podcast recently with Dale Johnson, who has been chronicling VAR's use all over Europe, and apparently it's even worse in Italy and France.

They seem to get it mostly right in Champions League, however.

WTF is the VAR ref doing today? How is what Maguire did to Batshuayi NOT a red card? That was clear and deliberate.

I wonder how Chelsea and United fans would have reacted if you told them in 2010 that 10 years from now in game week 26 you’ll be a combined 76 points behind 1st place and each playing with trash lineups.

Dale Johnson is a great follow on Twitter if you want a deeper look into VAR.

That Son play was the exact reason why I thought Maguire should be given a red card. Glad to see them reference it.

Maguire's was all ball though.

Somehow Maguire escapes a red but Willian gets a yellow for taking a kick to the shin.  Great job, EPL refs.

Lol Chelsea

You can say that again. Maguire, fitting.

Uh . . . so Chelsea's goal is called back by VAR because Fred pushed Azpi into a defender and then Maguire scores when he should have been red carded in the first half.  It's like the EPL refs and VAR are total shit.

It’s more that Anthony Taylor, Chris Kavanaugh and Martin Atkinson are shitty refs.

Fans are leaving due to “A revolt about VAR”

lol. Giroud was a yard offsides. VAR isn’t going anywhere.

Wait, Chelsea isn't being competitive while playing a front line of Pedro, Willian and Bats leading the line while Christensen and Caballero man the defense?
