“There's an old joke - um... two elderly women are at a Catskill mountain resort, and one of 'em says, "Boy, the food at this place is really terrible." The other one says, "Yeah, I know; and such small portions." Well, that's essentially how I feel about life - full of loneliness, and misery, and suffering, and unhappiness, and it's all over much too quickly.”

“This guy goes to a psychiatrist and says, Doc, my brother’s crazy. He thinks he’s a chicken. The doctor says, Well, why don’t you turn him in? And the guy says, I would but I need the eggs. Well I guess that’s pretty much how I feel about relationships. You know they’re totally irrational and crazy and absurd but I guess we keep going through it because, uh, most of us need the eggs.”

Oh my god you're HUUUGE!!

Eraserhead (1977)

Mrs. X: Henry, may I speak to you a minute? Over here. Did you and Mary have sexual intercourse?

Henry Spencer: [stammering] Why?

Mrs. X: Did you?

Henry Spencer: Why are you asking me this question?

Mrs. X: I have a very good reason, and now I want you to tell me.

Henry Spencer: I'm, I'm very... I love Mary!

Mrs. X: [interrupting] Henry, I asked you if you and Mary had sexual intercourse!

Henry Spencer: Well, I don't... I don't think that's any of your business!

Mrs. X: [interrupting] Henry!

Henry Spencer: I'm sorry.

Mrs. X: You're in very bad trouble if you won't cooperate...

[nuzzling at his neck]

Henry Spencer: Well, I...

[calls]

Henry Spencer: Mary!

Mary X: [grabbing her away] Mother!

[sobs]

Mrs. X: Answer me!

Henry Spencer: I'm too nervous.

Mrs. X: There's a baby. It's at the hospital.

Mary X: Mom!

Mrs. X: And you're the father.

Henry Spencer: Well, well that's impossible! It's only been...

Mary X: Mother, they're still not sure it is a baby!

Laszlo: Play La Marseillaise. Play  it!

Bandleader: Looks at Rick

Rick: (nods)

The rest is seared upon the eyes and ears of history - epic, man.  Epic.

The entire movie is quotable.
Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world she walks into mine.
Play it, Sam. Play “As Time Goes By.”
Lotta water under the bridge.
Round up the usual suspects.
Somehow, because you despise me, you are the only one I trust.

I shall remember to pay it to myself.
I really can’t say, although I knew him in Paris.

Agreed, there are many quotable lines.  But when the house band cranks up La Marseillaise and the patrons all join in and drown out the Nazis, and the hooker with a heart of gold at the bar sings out "Aux armes, citoyens!" and shouts "Vive la France!" at the end, it gets me right in the old heart every time.  Strong, strong stuff.  I don't know of a more memorable sequence in any film.

It's just one long sentence, but it lasts from 1:35-1:55 in this clip.  I happily steal it from Mamet on a monthly basis.  It's so brilliantly delivered from an otherwise subdued Pacino.

i know you're a big comedy/comedians guy, but nice to see you're a mamet fan too.  not sure if you're into his other stuff, but state and main, house of games, and spanish prisoner are among my favorites (that he's written and directed).

whenever i'm stuck on anything i'm writing, i put on mamet, simon, goldman, sorkin to get me going.  they're all represented on this thread, 3/4 on this page.
