I was just listening to Milquetoast by Helmet and thought about how good The Crow’s soundtrack was. Also, Singles was awesome. In my lifetime, that’s about the time that movies started to push commercial bands/music as part of the movie. List your favorites.

Vision Quest

Valley Girl

It’s a bit more recent and retro, but my kids love the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtracks.

seemed somewhat related.

Agree on GotG

Forgot how awesome the soundtrack is on Finding Forrester.  Nice addition. I like your list, I'll add:

Almost Famous

Blow

Saw Dances with Wolves last weekend. I noticed the Love Theme sounds an awful lot like Stranger on the Shore (in Mr. Holland's Opus). I wonder how he got away with that (if he did). Still a great movie.

I always liked the soundtrack to Risky Business.  It's mostly the score from Tangerine Dream, with some Muddy Waters, Jeff Beck, Prince, and Phil Collins thrown in.  Just skip the first track (Old Time Rock 'n Roll).

Ennio Morricone is awesone, he's probably my favorite composer of musical scores, even above John Williams.  The Untouchables has one of my favorite main title themes ever.

And I realize that the above score is titled "motion picture soundtrack" but I always make a distinction between the score, and the soundtrack.  Some movies have one or the other, and some movies have both.  But when I think "best movie soundtrack" I'm thinking the various songs in the movie, like Vision Quest, rather than the musical arrangements by composers like John Williams and Ennio Morricone and Maurice Jarre.

I totally agree with you, but I figured that the OP kinda intended for both to be included, so I did.

I don’t really remember many “soundtracks” because they’re just songs, so most of them mean little to me.

I contend this BTTF part would have fit perfectly in Predator '87

Both Alan Silvestri so similarities make sense

I was distinguishing between score and soundtrack, but don’t really care. Random good one is Big Night. Cook a big meal and listen to it. Drink lots.

^ Good one. It's hard to imagine a lot of the scenes without the songs that go with them.

Score - The Godfather and Last of the Mohicans

Soundtrack - Pulp Fiction, Dazed and Confused, Almost Famous and O Brother Where Art Thou.

Score for dunkirk was awesome

Top gun for the time was great,  full of 80s cheese.

But best was flash Gordon.

My thing about Soundtracks... I can hear a song on the radio and remember the exact scene of a certain movie, or multiple movies.  When you damn near remember an entire movie in your mind while listening to the soundtrack, or hearing random songs from a soundtrack, they chose well.

Wonderful documentary with a wonderful score. Really top notch.

An excerpt of this was used so well in Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World which might just be my #1. Musical bliss at 10:30, we don't get to hear that part in the movie.

I love that your username and avatar reference one of the most perfectly placed songs in any movie ever.

I’ll add About a Boy.

Gladiator. The wheatfield, the battles, entering Rome... Just an epic score.

“Go to them, Maximus...” still gets me everytime.

It’s been stated half a dozen times or more in the previous 40 posts.

One not mentioned is how unbelievable the score is for Interstellar.   Just incredible.

Valley Girl

Pretty in Pink

Purple Rain

Fast Times at Ridgemont High

Say Anything

Bumblebee

TV Shows:  The Americans, Red Oaks

after Pulp Fiction i got on a kick of buying soundtracks...these were good i don't see mentioned:

Desperado

Get Shorty

LA Confidential

From Dusk Til Dawn

The Talented Mr. Ripley

Here's 3 movies that have been panned, but had good soundtracks...

Pearl Harbor (bonus Beckinsdale)

The Village

Signs

The Village was panned because of twist fatigue but it was a decent story well executed with the three main characters putting in fantastic performances. The omnipresent violin really takes it up a notch.

Signs is just a great movie, I don't care what anyone says.

As someone who has seen every Twilight Zone and writes short stories with twists, I agree on Signs.
