June 20, 20196 yr Author I like that the first song on the soundtrack is “Can the Circle Be Unbroken (Bye and Bye)” by the Carter Family, and the last song is “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” – Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Essentially the same song, and whoever put the soundtrack together knew what they were doing.
June 20, 20196 yr The first couple of episodes (historical beginnings up through about Hank W.) should be really, really good especially.
June 20, 20196 yr Dolly telling the story of writing "I Will Always Love You" is awesome. Never knew that before.
June 20, 20196 yr You'd think Burns would go ahead and cover both kinds of music and not just country. Maybe western is another documentary.
June 20, 20196 yr Can someone edit this down to the parts about Willie, Waylon, Merle, and Johnny for me?

June 20, 20196 yr Love all the Jimmie Rodgers on the first disc. Of course will be giving this a watch. It's Ken Fucking Burns.

June 20, 20196 yr Heh, I did get to meet John Ritter’s daddyTex, before John was born. Saw Elvis in 1955 or 1956.

It’s extremely representative of the breadth of country music, and it’s not simply a greatest hits/whatever was topping the charts at a particular moment. I feel like I’ve got a good idea of how the series is going to progress based on the individuals CDs.

June 20, 20196 yr While looking up the soundtrack for the Country Music series, I thought about how great the songs were in the Vietnam War series. Another great soundtrack which will be arriving in 2 days with free shipping.
June 20, 20196 yr Tons of great music in that soundtrack. That was the soundtrack of my youth. I did not hear any rock music(other than Elvis) until I was a teenager(when mom let me buy cassette tapes, bootlegs, at the local trade day). I recall Tex Ritter, Hank Williams, Roy Acuff, Flatt and Scruggs albums most vividly. We had a few Elvis albums and mom loved her some Patsy Cline.
June 20, 20196 yr This looks so awesome, I cannot wait! Brenda Lee sang a song about my wife's great grandfather. "Brother Shelton" Edited June 20, 20196 yr by BearSchlong
June 21, 20196 yr Looks like episode 7 will cover the 70's Austin/Texas scene. Another recommendation is the Malcom Gladwell and Rick Rubin podcast Broken Record, specifically episode 4 of season 1. Great hour with 4 Nashville songwriters telling stories. Highly recommend. https://brokenrecordpodcast.com/episodes#/episode-4/ Edited June 21, 20196 yr by Par4

June 23, 20196 yr One of the reasons I contribute to the local PBS station is because of such programming. Burns is a God when doing a documentary, and this compilation should be up to his usual top shelf style.

September 9, 20196 yr Starts this Sunday. Yesterday PBS played a concert from the Ryman in Nashville as sort of a preview, streaming here: https://www.pbs.org/kenburns/country-music/
September 9, 20196 yr Thx for the reminder. While I hate most current country music, I do love the blues based country of old.
September 10, 20196 yr I like Kenny Rogers alright but you’re going to swap a smoke and the last of your whiskey for some bullshit advice from a chronically ill gambler?

I saw a blurb that they mention/discuss/play clips from around 500 songs. Should be something in there you like. Im not going to go into old man screaming at clouds like @Armybrat but I do think many younger folks are going to have their eyes opened up by the Carter Family and some of the earlier stuff. Of course, they’ll go back to playing their shitty songs about Solo cups the next day.
September 11, 20196 yr This playlist is amazing. Among other things it’s like a Coen Bros retrospective. If you’re using the Spotify app make sure you go full screen for each track, there is some interesting art and animation.
