The first XCOM game is on mobile. 

Civilization 6 is on iPad but not phones. Not sure about android. 

Those aren’t free though, just good games

Thanks. Great. I didn't even think of xcom. I have civ 6 on computer but cant work out the left click button on remote desktop.

I haven’t played them myself but Banner Saga 1 and 2 are both on mobile I believe. I’ve always heard they’re good. They’re well reviewed turn based games. 

I think they’re mostly tactical RPGs

pretty sure it has no online component at all. Just a single player game. 

I know it has no ads and no in-app purchases 

There is a Civilization on the iPhone.  Not as robust as the full game, but a good time killer on flights.
