June 25, 20196 yr We had a power pop thread on the old site with tons of great stuff in there. Let's do that again.
June 25, 20196 yr Probably the last time I really spent a lot of time listening to "new" music, my son was around 10 at the time and just getting into music/listening to the radio, so I spent a lot of time listening to his music, some pretty good pop bands in the early 2000's... (This one I found via my kids through one of those Rathergood videos, the same guy that did the crazy Quizno's We Like the Subs commercials, Joel Veitch, he did one for this song with a bunch of screaming kittens...) Love Fountains of Wayne, a deep cut here but love the Boz Scaggs vibe...
June 25, 20196 yr I wanna play! Adam Schmidt NEVER got his credit and quickly disappeared off of the music landscape. I've heard rumors about what happened to him but nothing more verifiable. Lemonheads: So many to pick from. Butch Walker: Not many people are still doing it, but Butch is.
June 25, 20196 yr I've posted their most popular song "Yellow Pills" many times, so I'll go a little deeper, still good:
June 25, 20196 yr As with most Steve Hoffman threads, it tends to stray out of its lane at times, but shitloads of great stuff in here, tons of bands I never heard of, just gonna make one huge playlist off of these someday.. https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/looking-for-recommendations-for-power-pop-from-1977-1983.369061/

I remember you mentioning him before, I even tried to look up his recording studio as my band is getting ready to record a new album and was checking out rates, but couldn't find anything up to date. June 27, 20196 yr Power pop is my jam. So many to choose from . . . Cheap Trick, Plimsouls (even though Pete Case hates the term), Marshall Crenshaw, Smithereens, etc., etc. Here's a couple I really like.
June 30, 20196 yr Probably the greatest power pop song of all time: And I love the Donnas. Wish they had gotten the credit they deserved:
July 1, 20196 yr Author My kids loved Yo Gabba Gabba when they were younger. Such a great show with so many great musical guests. This was one of their favorites:
July 4, 20196 yr Kind of surprised that this thread was started and not one mention of third eye blind.
July 9, 20196 yr I think this is a nice little piece of power pop...heard it on my play list this morning:
July 10, 20196 yr One of my favs. Would be interested at how much y'all think "power pop" and "pop punk" cross into each other. Edited July 10, 20196 yr by ztejas

The second one is also pretty dang good, if you can find it. They seem to have been almost erased from history, unfortunately. Edited July 12, 20196 yr by DougO
July 14, 20196 yr As a Matthew Sweet fanboi “100% Fun” and “Girlfriend” are easily album numbers 1 & 2 but this is the song that gets my juices flowing. Just a raw visceral jam.
July 14, 20196 yr Also, please be upstanding for the Mayor of Simpleton. Just a brilliant song from hook to structure to lyrics to harmonies and that outrageous bass line. All that and I’m still in love with that model/actress. So Audrey Hepburn-esque...
July 14, 20196 yr I'm always surprised how grungy Matthew Sweet's tunes are. I mean, I've listened to almost every album a hundred times at a minimum, but in my mind it remains very jangly pop, and then I hear a tune and remember "oh shit, these guitars are THICK". Always. It's the perfect recipe. He's had it dialed in forever.

It appears he's worked with several different artists, including Tommy Keene and Bun E. Carlos, who put out a solo disc a few years back. http://www.adamschmitt.com/Adam_Schmitt_Music_Production_Audio_Recording_Engineering_Mixing_Mastering.html

I don't know if XTC fits the power pop mold per se, but they absolutely could write tunes. Such as.....
July 15, 20196 yr Oh, no doubt, XTC was (is?) brilliant. Right up there with Squeeze, Split Enz, The Cure in terms of post-Beatles pop mastery.
July 16, 20196 yr Not a huge fan, but there are certainly some gems in this thread that will be added to my Ipod. Thought I might add The Babys. Might be a bit more pop than power, but... @hullabelew, aren't you a big fan of the back-up singer in pink? I think I remember you chronicling her resume on TOS. And, of course, another...

July 16, 20196 yr (Cue hulla raging about how Jonathan Cain ruins every band he joins)And you don't see Jonathan Cain in that video.... coincidence? I think not. And @steelshank I didn't see a chick in pink.... But I have been known to stalk a background singer or 40.
