Sadly, because we're facing sociopathic policy rationalized by limited-empathy assholes.

To be fair, the policy and the law are decades old and unchanged for politically depraved reasons.  The current administration is enforcing those laws for plain old depraved reasons.

Which policy and law are you talking about, and dating from when?   These deaths appear to result from a combination of Trump blocking ports of entry and pressuring Mexican officials to send troops to clear away immigrants waiting on the Mexican side of the border.  Assuming those reports are true, that appears to be based on new policy and no law, which is the basis for the lawsuit challenging these practices.   My understanding that metering started in 2016 to deal with too many people to process, but now it is being used simply to prevent people from legally seeking asylum despite plenty of capacity for processing:

News reports state that Martínez Ramírez, 25, died as he tried to bring his 23-month-old daughter to the United States along with his wife, Tania Vanessa Ávalos. La Jornada, a Mexican newspaper, reported that Tania said the family for two months had been staying at a migrant camp awaiting an appointment to ask for asylum in the United States. La Jornada also reported that the family had a humanitarian visa from Mexico.

ElSalvador.com reported that the couple told their family that the situation in Mexico was becoming difficult based on Trump’s pressure on Mexican officials to stem the flow of illegal immigration to the United States. Given the extended wait in Mexico and worried about Trump’s pressure on Mexico, the couple decided to cross the river.

The way I see it, Trump used the scare tactic of a brown invasion to help him win the election. He's keeping his fanbase fired up and the Dems have latched onto the issue to beat him over the head for their own political goals. The immigrants are secondary to both parties actual aims which is simply power.

I guess it's nice that he brought the plight of our neighbors to the forefront of our collective conscience, so there's that.

The Kent State massacre, and the Vietnamese girl who had her clothes burned off from a napalm strike most likely generated a lot more conversation.

“Four dead in oh-hi-oh”

I've got about a five page list of why the Statesman sucks. This ain't on it. The first four pages involve the sports pages staff's hostility towards the hometown football program.

Another reason the Statesman sucks is the weekly loose leaf ads crammed in your mailbox, even if you don't subscribe.
