It's not "practical politics."  It's bad-faith demagoguery of the worst kind.  The absolute worst.

That it jibes with Qanon narratives makes it that much more irresistible.

It makes Joe McCarthy look like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.

How do you know it’s the tail wagging the dog and not the other way around? What makes you so sure here?

It seems more likely to me that these people are feeding the masses what they want; they aren’t smart enough to manufacture and psychologically manipulate the demand.

I thought it meant that stupid accusations that are lazy and baseless mean that you are really projecting your own thoughts and feelings and betraying yourself, and that it’s a universal axiom for all?

Ever heard of Pavlov's dog? That's what they're getting at, but it also has a feedback loop.

After decades of conditioning, the base only craves red meat, which is kind of like electrolytes. It's what plants crave.

After decades of feeding the plants electrolytes, it's the only thing their masters know to give them which, ironically enough, slowly poisons them and starves their masters.

In other words, it's a toxic, codependent, and addictive relationship wherein the abuser gains perceived self-worth by gaslighting the abused but, over time, inflicts harm on himself.

While a decent explanation, I'm not sure that is what Twice was saying.

The pseudo-rage over her child porn sentencing is just one more thing that has a perfectly valid explanation, but they intentionally twist the narrative to white knight for their base.  According to what I've read, it is widely accepted in the legal community that Federal sentencing guidelines for possession (not creation) of child porn are far too harsh.  Even prosecutors routinely suggest well-less-than-minimum sentences.

Ted knows this.  Ted doesn't care.  Ted is a monster.

Even the US Sentencing Commission has said that the CP sentencing guidelines don't make no sense and are not supported by empirical evidence.

But in the case of CP, Congress took the unusual step of legislating the guidelines, instead of letting the Commission figure it out.  So their hands are tied.

It's one of the worst exercises of federal criminal legislation as pandering to unjustified fear in our history, which has a lot of examples of that.

They are simultaneously fueling the demand and satisfying it.  And using fiction in both instances to do so.

I disagree. The politicians who pander to their base/people are doing so for one reason and one reason only; pursuit of political power. Take Ted Cruz for example since people have mentioned him. You really think an hispanic guy named Rafael who was an ivy league legal beagle and scholar would choose to willingly dance to the beat he has been dancing to? Of course not-- he is smart enough to see his line of sight to political power is to play the part--and play it well-- hence, practical politics.

Politicians are merely responding to the demand of what their constituents want to consume. When/If MAGAT falls out of favor and XYZ is the new absurd political rage, these politicians will be XYZers if it means the path of least resistance to obtaining and maintaining power. Any other explanation beyond this is assigning too much credit to these politicians, IMO, and nothing you've said has bolstered your strong opinion a few posts up otherwise.

There's practical politics, and there's this.

Whether Felito would have preferred a more high-minded approach to political power at some point is irrelevant.  He has, in fact, willingly chosen to dance to the beat that he dances to.  And he dances like a motherfucker.

Politics is a nasty business in terms of pandering and other corruptions.  I have always believed that and generally been repulsed by politicians.

But what Cruz and his ilk are doing is absolutely beyond the pale.  He could quit at any time, but he fucking loves it.  I think he likes twattering and the power he gains from it more than being a lawyer.

In my pollyannaish world, I wish more politicians would "do the right thing" and appeal to the higher nature of Americans.  I get that the vast majority of them don't do that.

But not all of them actively whip the absolute worst tendencies of the American public for their own personal gain.

And that's why I don't fuck with the GOP anymore.

ADDENDUM:  I don't think you're a troll or a bad-faith poster.  But a lot of your posts, like the above, have a tendency to try to normalize what the GQP and Trumpists are doing as "politics as usual."  I don't think you're trying to be a dick about it, but I suspect you may be struggling to hold on to your "conservative" beliefs in the face of this dogshit.

This is what every single person who has ever voted republican or continues to vote republican needs to read and understand.  There is no more "politicians all suck" argument.  The Rs have gone WAY over the line and there is no coming back.  Only going forward into the fascist abyss.  And that ends in two ways, both involve horrendous violence.  Good job assholes.

Yeah I get it. Pelosi should be able to rack up 115+m while in office because Ivanka did 600.  Newsflash. They all fucking suck. To which degree is not really arguable anymore.  But being less suck is still suck.  In a country of 300m you think we could do better with the few thousand people that run this country.  But I know, last guy bad and all that.

everyone sucks so imma vote for the one that doesn't hit my pocketbook directly more even though it empirically has lead to worse economic outcomes over the last 34 years so probably has reduced my income by more than the pocketbook hit

Eh, I vaguely remember something about that thread, but a link would be nice.  I don't have a FB account, and run cattle myself, so interested in my state of mind at the moment.  I do lay pipelines though, so who knows.

Also, I can easily see what 5 fold of something is.  What I fail to understand is how 1x is completely excused to the point that they've been continually voted into office (encouraged if you will) for 33 years.  And I'm not even a Pelosi hater, just the easiest example for me to google.

Pardon me, Counselor, but I have but one small bone to pick with this statement. To the best of my knowledge, neither ChemBoob Ivanka nor her Cerakote-faced spouse have ever filed for candidacy so the term 'politician' in terms of a political 'career' is being overly generous. That is not to say that she does not fit the looser definition of the word or that she does not or did not have political aspirations, but the truth of the matter is that she wholly had political perspiration--the effluviant droplets of sweat bestowed, or rather, flung upon her by her father and his egregious offenses while in office. She was (once named) a special 'advisor' or 'assistant' to the President, and as such should have been subject to the ethical code of conduct applied to any government official, which she conveniently ignored. Multiple times. That was a hallmark of the former administration for most of their set, having sent the former Office of Government Ethics Director, Walter Shaub into apoplexy as the count of violations grew immeasurable.

Her livelihood is more that of a *freebooter, or mafia moll serving as the more genteel face of The Family, in my opinion.

I have no doubt that the current Speaker has gained some measure of financial success due to her position, but even my humble family has invested our smaller nest egg somewhat conservatively and done well over a long period of time. I would not object at all at all if the current Speaker were to retire, but that is up to her own thoughts and those of her constituents.

*I would use the term 'pirate' but only in its general sense of plunder and pillage. I'm afraid that the general public often conjures up a more romantic image of pirates than they deserve.

Of course, because sleight of hand, distraction, and theatrical displays are effective methods of liberating the desired treasure from the mark. It takes brains, courage, and love to keep the country on course. Gerrymandering.  It's gerrymandering that gets us worse and worse results because the districts are polarized into +23 point safe zones for both sides so we get more extremes. They need to go the other way to the +/-5% zone all the way around.  Make the districts using population and geographic cohesiveness (compact, following rivers, major roads or political entity boundaries like city or county lines).  Race, age, religion, education level, income, political bent, union membership, etc. are factors that should not be included in drawing the lines.  Just population density and geographic cohesiveness.

This is never going to happen now that the Supreme Court is throwing out any attempt to stop the Gerrymandering.

Gerrymandering is a great example of pols not doing the right thing.  The right thing would be to legislate it out of existence at the state level.

It is a "bothsides" thing, but it has gotten that much worse as an intellectually bankrupt GOP struggles to hold on to power.
