Got hammered many a night on Thai Bloody Mary's made with "Garfield Water" as the didn't have a liquor license. I even gave Dick a stack of 45's for the jukebox.
June 28, 20196 yr 49 posts and no East 6th Street mentions? Come on now. I don't remember the name, it might have been Bourbon Street, very clever name, it was a "New Orleans style" themed shot bar on East 6th back in the aughts. Edited June 28, 20196 yr by billfromlaketravis

The last one was pretty fun and there was a dude with an eye patch and a huge knife practicing his pool trick shots while young kids were selling Girl Scout cookies at the bar. That’s divey.

June 29, 20196 yr All this talk of old Austin bars, is Cloak Room still open? And thanks for the mention of Dry Creek I thought it was closed by now. My dad started at UT in 61, I started in 89. After my first visit to Dry Creek I told him I liked it but there was a mean old bitch downstairs. He told me she was mean, and old, when he first went there too.

June 29, 20196 yr I have to laugh when people think the old timers are mean. It usually means they don't have time for idiots. They have to deal with a lot of them, and they have, over the years. Be a respectful customer and you just might be surprised at how nice they are.

In my subjective opinion based on nothing but "feel and intuition" the following qualify as no-doubt dive bars: -G&S Lounge -04 Lounge -Giddyup's -Barfly's -Sam's Townpoint -Buddy's Then you've got bars with Dive qualities, but are not dive bars: "Cool Bars" with hip people. Mainly on the East side and downtown - Casino, white horse, liberty, violet crown social club, yellow jacket, jackalope, etc. Others not downtown include Little Darlin or Work Horse or Indian Roller. College bars like Crown and Posse and Hole in the Wall. "Dive aspirational" but the clientele disqualifies them. Places like Lala's and Dry Creek and Donn's Depot, and Ginny's and now Deep Eddy. Deep Eddy used to be a dive. But the addition of Pool Burger downstairs and the clientele they bring now disqualifies Deep Eddy as a true dive. Then you've got pubs like Pour House, Drought Horse, and ABGB that have dive qualities, but are definitely not dives. You can probably infer from my list that I don't go up north too often. I'd be interested to know of any north side dives other than Buddy's. Maybe Common Interest? It's been years since I've been there. good call on g&s and 04. I also like egos and deep eddy.
June 29, 20196 yr Cloak Room-- not just the worst message board forum in the history of the planet, host to the largest group of idiotic fucktards ever to grace the intenets-- but also a bar in Austin that is sort of sequestered and festering, but ultimately NOT a dive bar. The Hideout-- interesting mention. I'll probably go along with it being a dive. And then there's Cedar Park Pub. Pretty much a a total shithole. Does that make it a dive? Probably... Which brings me to strip center dumps like Anderson Mill Tavern and Parmer Lane Tavern? They're dumpy neighborhood bars, but are they dives? Maybe sort of?

June 29, 20196 yr It’s much more colorful when the lege is in session. Or used to be anyway back when Republicans drank.
June 29, 20196 yr Author We went to a welcome home get together at a gay dive bar called ‘Bout Time close to the Rundberg/I-35 intersection in 2001. My friend had lots of interesting friends, however I refrained from using the unisex restroom in spite of the four brews I drank.

July 2, 20196 yr curious if irish dates back to when the draughthouse was called the draught horse, or if that's just an adopted shibboleth of Austin old timiness. It's been like 30 years right?
