Light or dark and what's the taste/flavor? If I recall right its $30ish a bottle?

Whats the price and whats the taste?

That one was $95 and the taste is good. The Foursquare exceptional cask bottles are more akin to a good sipping Whisky than any other rum I know. Honestly, I'm not good with tasting notes, so here's what Google says:

"Notes of allspice, dates, vanilla bean, coconut and fried dough"

eeeek... a little too expensive for me . I try to max out under $50, but maybe I'll splurge for a once a year celebration.

Thanks for the info though

Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva.  It should cost less than the MMPS and not a lot more than the other bourbons you drink (tip of the cap to a fellow EWSB fan), and it's damn good.

Kinda forgot.....until I didn’t.

I’ve had a couple bottles of this, and really enjoy it neat.

Nothing like having a conversation with a rummy.  The only thing better is a rum-soaked fishing guide.

This stuff is legit, esp. considering it's under $40.  I get a good amount of brown sugar, vanilla, and some coconut, with a little burnt sugar note at the end.  Sweet, but not as sweet as the Diplomatico RE.  A good sipper and you could probably use it for blending as well.

How does it compare to the El Dorado 15 (which is one of my favorites)?

I haven't had the 15.  Based on the 12 and your rec, I will have to try it soon.

Drinking Cockspur 12 tonight. Tastes like pecan pie with a little bit of tobacco. So good. Feel like most bourbon lovers would like this one.

I always keep a bottle or two of Cuban Havana Club  Anejo around it's delicious.

Also,m surprised there's not more love for Flor de Caña on this thread.

Do you buy it online?  I really like the Puerto Rican version and have wanted to try the Cuban version.

Nah, every once in a while I get lucky and somebody brings me some. My favorite is Bundaberg from Australia, but it's not sold in the US and is generally hard to get.

Keep in mind they're both Havana Club in name alone. A lot of bad blood there between families.

I scored 2 bottles of Cuban from duty free on my way home from Quito last year. Almost out of my last one.

It's pretty warm out here today, and that means it's time to break out the rum when I sit on the front porch this evening.  Will probably kill off my bottle of this.

Loving this stuff, especially in a classic daiquiri. Wild fermented. Cannot recommend enough.

Yeah CB parent company was sold and CB wasn't part of the deal. Terrible.

I haven't had the light Havana Club but the 7 year makes a damn fine daq.

I credit the revival of this thread to inspiring me to drink El Dorado 12YO tonight.  Thank you, Surly.

I’m heading to Roatan in a month and I’m going to see if Santiago De Cuba is available.  Anyone have any opinions on it?

by the way, why is Cockspur so damn hard to find all of a sudden?  Covid issues?  I read that the parent company is battling with the other Barbados rum makers about what constitutes Barbados rum.  They want to haul it to Europe to age and the rest aren’t cool with that.  Don’t know if that had anything to do with it

Picked this up at the Costco in North Austin today because of the “limited edition” bottle. Made a lot of painkillers with it. It was tasty.

Whiskey drinkers will stare down their noses at drinks like a Painkiller, but that shit is fucking delicious when done right and isn't cloying.

Truth.

And a real piña colada (not one from a mix, not frozen) is one of the best summer drinks. The one at Under the Volcano in West U is my favorite in the State.

Just gifted this bad boy. A scotch drinkers rum with a nice balanced dose of peat. So complex and rich and delicious.

Necro bump, but it's warm out here tonight & it just seemed the right time for some rum.  El Dorado 12 to be exact.

I need to get some FourSquare in my life, too.

  • 8 months later...

It's another rum kind of night with a couple of old favorites:  El Dorado 12 & Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva.

P.S.  Rum was made for cigars.  Or vice versa.  I forget which.

I’ve enjoyed a few bottles of the Diplomatico.  Good stuff.
I used to buy Ten Cane Rum for my Mojitos and other mixed drinks.  But I don’t see it anymore. What is a similar rum?  Not white rum but light gold.

You might try Angostura 1919.  I haven't had it myself, but it's a gold rum from Trinidad & Tobago like 10 Cane was, so maybe it'll be similar.  It may be a little pricey for a mixer, but if you really want a gold rum, it's probably one you can find somewhere like TW or Bevmo.

Thanks, saw that one on TW.  Also, there’s a Hawaiian brand Koloa I may give a try.

Headed to Port A in a few weeks, and enjoy me some rum drinks at the beach.

Not normally a fan of gold rum but let me know how it is. For Mojitos I just use Captain Morgan clear

Heading to Barbados for vacation in a couple of weeks. Planning on doing the distillery tour at Mount Gay. I was unaware of Foursquare until about 5 mins ago. Ordered a bottle delivered to the house and the distillery also looks cool but Mount Gay is the oldest rum distillery in world and closer to hotel so opting for that. Should be cool tour. I’m guessing it will be similar to bourbon trail stops. Will report back.

The Kirkland 12YO barrel aged is pretty good for the $, IMO.  Wouldn't pay $40 for it (there are better rums at or below that price), but $20?  Yes.

  • 3 months later...

Went to Panama for thanksgiving and had some great rum. The Don Pancho 18 (extra blurry because of rum) really does it for me.  Apparently their age claims and additive free statement are questionable, but it went down like water on a warm night in Casco Viejo.  It’s only $70-$80 and I immediately bought a bottle after returning.
