"China announced Sunday that it is implementing new tariffs on more than 120 U.S. imports in response to President Trump’s recent decision to increase taxes on imported steel and aluminum.

The Chinese Ministry of Finance announced that it will impose a 15 percent tariff on 120 products, including fruits and other commodities, according to China's state news agency Xinhua. It will also impose a 25 percent tariff on pork and related products.

The tariffs will reportedly go into effect starting Monday."

Now let’s imagine a world where China decides to dump several hundreds of millions of dollars into a campaign to elect a democrat.  And that Democrat openly screams for Beijing’s support.  And uses in

  • Looks like Elkhart County went for Trump 64-32 over Hillary in 2016, so fuck 'em.  Enjoy the tariffs you voted for!

  • Apparently China didn't heed the stark example of what happens to those in a battle of financial wit between Donald Trump and Dennis Rodman. Ask Clint Black or Gene Simmons what happens. Go ahead and

They need our money as bad as we need their junk.  Unfortunately in a war of economic attrition, the Chinese are happy to eat bugs before capitulation.  They've done it before.

Trump's trade policy is moronic.  It's populist idiocy.

By far the biggest reason I am a Republican is the difference in economic policy - taxes, trade, fiscal restraint, and so forth.  But Trump's trade policy is the populist crap that I hate.  And for a few decades it is very difficult to have fiscal restraint because both parties have a kind of veto power.

I'm sorry, but all the reasons you list as being a republican? Yeah, that's not really a "thing" anymore

Funnily enough on everything but taxes on that list, Democrats are now the better party (for now, if Bernie types come in then all bets are off). In terms of fiscal responsibility, while the Democrats are tax and spend, at least they tax before they spend. Since 1992 official Republican policy seems to be cut taxes and spend. Democrats are now free traders. The list goes on.

I stopped being a Republican a long time ago because they weren't interested in fiscal restraint of any sort (unless it pissed off the Dems), and I still don't know why you carry their water, because all they care about is pleasing their lobbyists/donors.  They aren't even bothering to look ahead past the next few elections.

They laugh at people like you.  They use people like you, because you think that things like fiscal restraint matter to them, when they've got decades to show they don't care.  George W. and the Republican Congress shoulda told you everything you needed to know about the GOP in its current state.

You're wasting your breath AHB.  A Republican could cheat on his wife with a porn star, invite enemies who've killed on allies soil to the WH, cut taxes and raise spending, and it still wouldn't matter.  He'll be lining up to vote R this fall.

Fiscal restraint has not existed in either party for 30 years. I use to lean republican due to taxes and fiscal restraint but the second is a myth. This year taxes became a payoff to the top and the middle class in a few years will be back to getting screwed. So I have called myself an independent for some time but the republicans do not even look like a viable choice these days with all their populist craziness and self serving ways combined together.

Other than the stock market now plummeting a bit and off to the worst April start since thr great depression... What specific impact to American pocketbooks is this looking to have in the long run?

There has been no movement of note on a number of issues - fiscal restraint, guns and abortion are three that come quickly to mind.  In our Constitutional system narrow majorities don't allow either side to run over the other.

Fuck off Tahoe. A few months into his presidency you were spouting bullshit about "now isn't the time to oppose Trump". Complete and utter pussy garbage. The time to oppose Trump from both inside and outside the GOP was the very second that fucking moron got elected. And now here we are.

It's no surprise to anyone with a modicum of intelligence that  the Trump administration turned out to be an unmitigated shitshow, and the outrage SHOULD be deafening from within the GOP. Curiously, the only sound we hear with your mouth stuffed full of donuts is the rhythmic slapping of Trump's FUPA as he continually violates your unlubed asshole. In actuality, you stupid rubes probably enjoy it as long as Trump does his part to keep the browns out of the country, and you retards can keep stockpiling guns/ammo.

Higher prices for US goods in China drives reduced demand by Chinese customers. Reduced demand for US producer drives reduced production. Reduced production drives reduced employment of US workers. Reduced production also drives reduced economies of scale, which means cost of same products sold IN US increases and consumer pricing likely follows. Reduced production also drives reduced consumption by such US companies of products and services of other US companies. Reduced employment also drives reduced consumption by US consumers of other US companies’ products. Snowball.

Also, our 401ks drop with production declines.

Fuck China. Them and India are horrible polluters. We would be better off manufacturing our own shit in a much more environmentally responsible way here.

With fractional reserve lending and ultra low interest rates it's turned into funny money for quite a while. The debt burden requires an ever expanding debt bubble.

Basically, both parties are corrupt worthless fuckheads, but the real problem with spending is that nobody understands how fucked the money system is.

Over/under Republicans try to bailing out farmers through insurance / relief due to the crisis they created with China?

Tariffs are pretty much universally understood to hurt consumers more than companies or foreign countries. “Trade wars can be good and are easy to win” will be on Trump’s political tombstone.

The Republican party is the party of Trump. You cannot be a Republican and be anti-Trump. You cannot have it both ways. The Republican Party sold out on "fiscal restraint" a long time ago. The Republican party is now a populist, nativist, shit show.

Orange DOTUS out front should have told you.

You didn't vote for Trump? Somebody give this man a cookie, uh donut.

Its not about who you voted for. Its about the fact that you keep talking about how you are Republican, yet the current Republican party is the exact opposite of the reasons you claim to be a Republican.

You know how mad you get when you see a woman stay with a serial wife-beater?  He keeps breaking his promise to "never hit you again," every single week.  And she says "but this is my home.  And I can change him!"  So she stays there.  And gets beaten.  Again and again.  And even worse, she keeps the kids there.  And they get beaten too.  And she says, every single time, "I know that him hitting me is wrong, but in his heart, he's a good man!"

Tahoe's that woman.

Except he's a racist old fuck from Alabama.

It's stupid enough that he's getting beaten like a rented mule, and just takes it.  What's worse is, his enabling of this bullshittery (by continuous electoral support) means that the rest of us are getting beaten, too.

Tahoe - "I didn't vote for Trump, but I am not doing anything to effect change in the party so this never happens again"

Also Tahoe - "I didn't vote for Roy Moore, but I am not doing anything to effect change in the party so this never happens again"

Still Tahoe - "On everything except abortion and guns, we have flipped our ideology on its head, but I am not doing anything to effect change in the party so this never happens again"

Keep on keeping on, dude.

No guys, I never voted for Trump! I only vote for every republican because they are fiscally responsible and do the right things!

It's not because they hate the blacks! I swear

I'm not sure what the hell they are thinking with this honestly.  No one else is going to be able to produce enough soy to meet Chinese demand.

fucked.

Won't this just lower soy prices for us? I think there's a whole sub culture built around living off that stuff.

Not sell as much soy. Duh.

We will respond in a cycle of ever-increasing tariffs now, because Trump will be unable to let go and in his mind, this is now China's fault for responding to our "justified" tariffs.

And bankrupt some soy farmers, per the head of their industry group speaking this morning.

So, nothing much.  Just cornholing some more DOTUS voters who will respond with "thank you sir!  May I have another?!"

Is anyone aware of just one well-respected PhD economist that thinks this is all a good idea?

Maybe don't fuck with an economy supported by literally billions of good lil' commies that will do anything the government asks of them..

sure, just like it's amazons fault the postal service is losing money.  he's the teflon don.  nothing sticks.  he's not accountable for anything, not responsible for anything, not to blame for anything.  best president ever, with the highest ratings, and the largest inauguration attendance.  just ask him.  he wouldn't lie to us, would he?

Trade wars are stupid, but the markets appears to be dealing with this better than some posters here.

You think this is the totality of how the market will react?
