Fire destroys warehouse filled with 45,000 bourbon barrels

Featured Replies

A fire destroyed a massive Jim Beam warehouse filled with 45,000 barrels of bourbon, sending flames shooting into the night sky and generating so much heat that firetruck lights melted, authorities said Wednesday.

Firefighters from four counties responded to the blaze that erupted late Tuesday. Lightning might have been a factor, but fire investigators haven’t been able to start looking for the cause, Woodford County Emergency Management Director Drew Chandler said.

Officials from Jim Beam’s parent company, Suntory Food and Beverage, said the multi-story warehouse that burned contained “relatively young whiskey,” meaning it had not reached maturity for bottling for consumers.

“Given the age of the lost whiskey, this fire will not impact the availability of Jim Beam for consumers,” the spirits company said in a statement.

Suntory stock is actually up.  Must mean really good insurance policy.  They're probably claiming those exact 45,000 barrels were being aged longer for a special, more expensive product.

Didn't this happen to a smaller distillery a few years ago?

Does this mean Jim Beam is about to be as hard to find as Blanton's?

Must have been white lightening.  I'll see myself out.

Jim Beam

18-22 YO me is devastated. But he's 24 years older now.

They make Knob Creek, though, and I wonder if any of that was involved.

Isn't Knob Creek just extra aged Beam? I like KC and am not a fan of JB. The aging really helps.

It's such a tragedy when a young life is cut short. So much potential wiped away.

You didn't see an Iron on the ground because it's not there!

It was Heaven Hill, I think. Ironically, Jim Beam bailed them out and provided product until they could get back in production.

Ain't a goddamn thing wrong with Jim Beam.

I would agree with you, but then we would both be wrong.

In a flask on a football weekend snuck into the Stadium? Sure.

At home? Nah.

Beam Black ain't half bad for the money. Aged 8 years. $30 for a 1.75 at Spec's.

I was concerned until I saw it was Jim Beam.

Yeah but it's a shame it wasn't Kentucky Deluxe.

Derka is not amused.

He probably has nothing to worry about. I'm not convinced KD isn't just ethanol, water, and whiskey flavoring.

For some reason I thought his was rumpleminze

this

Black velvet or bust. The plastic bottle imparts a unique flavor profile. It also let's me look more authentic in my pop up front yard homeless camp.

This is the most appropriate time to link this song ever

Lots of things are better than Jim Beam. That doesn't make Jim Beam bad.

I've had better burgers than McDonald's, too, but sometimes a McDonald's cheeseburger will do the job just dandy.

I use Jim Beam rye for making Manhattans, and they come out mighty tasty just like that.

Charred oak barrels.....check

Damn you. Was just coming here to post a lame joke about them not realizing you’re supposed to char the barrel BEFORE putting the whiskey in...

Probably a financial win for the company. Collect insurance money on a product that won’t be ready for a few years.

Makes one of the best bourbon and gingers out there.  My go to at a Christmas party.

Both are plenty sufficient for mixing with coke, less so for sipping neat or on rocks.

Yep, there's mixer bourbon and sipping bourbon.  Nothing wrong with either.

These are pretty tasty, too. Never have been able to replicate the flavor mixing myself. The cola is impossible to replicate.

Well they have to put some coloring in there to make it look like whiskey too.

Ugh. I wish they sold shit like that in the US (should have qualified - in non liquor stores). When I was last in Costa Rica I went crazy on the cocktail in a cans you could buy from gas stations.

Can you really tell the difference once you mix them?

At least it was MFing Jim Beam! I drank enough of that slush, while stationed in S. Korea, to last the rest of my life!

Good God what a year over there! Early 90s

She’d know if you bragged about how much you spent on the bottle.
