My yard has been destroyed with a pool install. Got a first quote to repair/re-sod.
Coming in a tad north of $10K for what would include re-grading/leveling, 6 yards of lawn soil, and 6 pallets of st augustine - turnkey.
In SW Austin. I've got a bit of sticker shock, but they have capacity to start soon and have great reviews. Feeling like I'm running out of time and yard will be an ugly mud pit if I can't get something to start growing very soon.
Does that quote look about right (if anything is right anymore in this town...) ?
Not sure if we need a new thread for 2022, or rather just a "forever" lawn thread .. above my pay grade.
Anyway, I'll ask here. Contractors left a big pile of sand at my house. Would it be good, bad, or indifferent if I spread it out over the lawn.
I have typical Austin rocky soil, St Augustine grass. Some areas seem to have a lot of clay, others less so from my experience digging in it..
Thanks.
Maybe UV systems are good for people who don't take great care of their pools. In my experience using the TFP bleach method - once you have all your levels dialed in and you keep up with it (which is a pain in the ass, granted - daily bleach additions, testing, etc) - you don't get much of a chlorine smell/feel at all. You get that when there is something out of balance and the chlorine is doing lots of work to combat it.
My suspicion is that bacteria is not the major culprit for putting the chlorine to work - rather algae and other organics are (I could be wrong here).
I could see UV being good to keep the water sanitized even if your other levels are out of whack - i.e. too high CYA so chlorine not effective, too low chlorine, etc. But for those conditions you are going to get algae or other stuff which UV likely won't help with. So you're back to shocking the pool which makes it feel/smell like chlorine.
And I maintain that the sun will break down the chlorine fast enough that I can't really see the UV system significantly reducing the need for additions.
I could be wrong, but that's my semi-informed opinion on it.
Curious about this. It seems you'd still need to maintain the same Free Chlorine (FC) levels with or without UV - 1) for algae and other things that might not pass through the UV system or would not be affected by it - and 2) because you don't truly know if the UV system is keeping the pool sanitized from bugs.
So, perhaps the UV system kills a bunch of stuff and therefore the chlorine doesn't need to and doesn't 'deplete' as quickly - you may end up needing to add less to maintain levels. Is that it? How much less? It seems like the sun will break down the chlorine pretty quickly regardless negating much of this.
What am I missing?
How much effort is the turtle to take care of? Do you have to buy goldfish or pellets regularly?
Is his pond heated? Take a lot of upkeep?
Just wondering how much burden he might be to a new owner.
Also curious, is he able to escape his pond if he chose to? Like is he content there and staying of his own free will or would he wander off if given the chance?
The tile is placed, it's about a 20-30 degree slope down from front (poolside) to back (skimmer box). I'm going to bring it up to the builder when he comes by next, but trying to arm myself with information beforehand.
edit: perhaps closer to 10-20 degree slope
.. another question - for the skimmers they made the "runway" leading to the skimmer slanted down. As in, pool side is 3 or so inches higher than the skimmer compartment itself so water would flow downhill into the skimmer. Every other skimmer I've seen the "runway" has been flat. Is this some new thing or is there an advantage?
Can anyone tell me what a standard bench depth in a spa should be?
Our (in progress build) is 24" from the bench to top of coping, 22" to bottom of coping. My wife is concerned she wont be able to sit comfortably since she's not very tall.
I don't know if this is a standard thing or something I can reasonable raise to the builder as a problem.
RE: sanitation - I opted to go with a liquid chlorine pump which I'm going to tee into the pool return and hook up through the pool control system via a relay to a 110 outlet so I can automate adding bleach to the pool. My pool build is not complete yet, so I can't give you a review of the system, but I got most of the information form here:
https://www.troublefreepool.com/threads/stenner-liquid-chlorine-pump-how-to-choose-and-install.169591/
This is the pump/tank I bought ($470) :
https://www.poolweb.com/products/15-gallon-gray-chemical-tank-with-45mp2-model-fixed-pump-25-psi-10-gpd-120-volt-1-4-inch-uv-tubing
They are going to put in a chlorine puck feeder (pvc) tube also as a backup option.
Fucking assholes - we're trying to have a society here.
It's a tough one. You could report him to the City and/or his HOA and they may force him to do something - but chances are good that he'd do the minimum and you'd be staring at some hack job back there. If he's not in violation of his HOA or the City code, then not sure what you could do.
Caveat: IANAL
Is the fence on your side of the property line, his side, or is it on the line? Do you have an HOA and do they have guidelines about fences that address whether it's shared or not?
Got a quote to replace 125' of fence + 4 gates in SW Austin. $7400!!!!
The gates were quoted about $550 each and the fence at about $43/ft.
This is for a 6 ft cedar (horizontal), with cedar posts. Nothing hard to do - 2 straight fence lines with a minimal slope.
That's crazy, right?
Anybody playing FPL? Thought I'd start a thread to discuss players and strategy.

Any tips for those who've taken their 'not quite 12yo' kids in?
Am thinking about one of the Austin/Travis Co no-appointment sites. My thought was to use the real name but change the birth year so the card will mostly be correct if needed at some point.
I only know of one person who attempted to get a booster (at a Walgreen's in California). They checked their insurance and determined they had already received a single-dose J&J and denied them getting a Pfizer shot. Now, had they lied and said they didn't have insurance, would they have checked a state database or had another way of knowing? Not sure.
Because a significant portion of our population is not eligible for vaccinations (children).
Because that population has had a serious dent put in their education missing 2 years of normal classroom instruction and can't afford any more disruptions.
Because the more the virus spreads, the more it mutates.
Because eventually it's likely a mutation could be more deadly to kids.
Because eventually a mutation will find it's way around the vaccines.
Because being a kid and having a vaccine aren't 100% protection.
Because it's much harder for this shit to spread and mutate when a high percentage of the population has a vaccine.
Jesus fucking christ you fuck nuts. Be a fucking man, do your civic and moral duty and get your fucking arm pricked so our gotdamned kids can be fucking kids again.
