Funny you consider it clueless and elitist considering I lived myself without a car for an extended period of time in my adult life, and the fact I was too poor was the primary reason. Spending $500 a month or more for car payments, insurance, maintenance, etc. is not something a "poor" person can afford. Or alternatively driving around in 15 or 20 year old cars that can't pass inspection, or will inevitably strand you when it breaks down is not a recipe for success. Or one can choose to forsake owning a car, choose a location to live served well by mass transit, and which has stores and services that are nearby so you can actually walk somewhere. These places already exist in most cities of any size, including Austin. Are there enough of them for everyone? Nope. Are they too expensive typically? Yep. Should anyone be forced to live such a lifestyle? Hell no. But hopefully the changes to our land use and urban planning which give people a choice will continue and even accelerate over the coming decades.

In truth, the "poors" shouldn't own an automobile anyways. I don't mean that in an insulting way either. It's just cars are expensive to buy and maintain. That money could be better spent on housing costs, or food, or savings. I understand though, given the way we have built our cities, with such segregation of uses and spread out over vast areas. Hopefully with better zoning and land use, along with public transport more people will at least have the option of living without a car, regardless of income.

  18. You know, the only live music I saw were the street performers in the French Quarter.
  19. A lot of stuff is still open. Tours are still available. You can still get your drink on at restaurants, but you have to buy food, and cannot get to-go drinks. However, two easy solutions are if you're not really hungry you can buy the cheapest appetizer or side on the menu. With that purchase you can sit there and down as many drinks as you want. Also, there are convenience stores all around where you can buy beer and liquor, go outside, open it up and walk around no problem. Something I did one of the days was buy a $3 Jazzy Pass, which gives you unlimited streetcar rides for 24 hours. I think I rode the length of every streetcar line in the city, hopping on and off to check out cool neighborhoods, and grab a bite and a few beers whenever I wanted. I never waited more than 10 minutes when I wanted to hop back on the streetcar. I also went to Harrah's Casino, and rode the ferry across the Mississippi. I thought there was still plenty to do, and had a great time.
  20. Yes, no, well maybe. They have one "cargo" pocket on the right leg. But they are Columbia brand, and are moisture wicking, UV blocking, performance gear suited for whatever adventure awaits! So that makes it alright, right?
  21. If you have not been, I strongly suggest a visit to the WW2 Museum next time you're in New Orleans. I just spent 7-8 hours there, and it was most definitely worth the price of admission.
  22. I think I want to move here. This place is special, even when Covid-19 is putting a damper on everything.
