  1. I understand why pretty much everyone is against this law in this thread and I agree that the way they went about this isn't a good approach. However, we should acknowledge the vast number of parents who legitimately don't have the time, energy, or knowledge necessary to teach and protect their children from the real problems that are associated with highly accessible, hyper realistic, and increasingly graphic porn. The folks who fit into this category are not the middle class to Surly 1%ers who have the resources to address this for their children. It's the low income and single parent families who work all week and already have very little ability to monitor their children. Just like all issues with children that are not being sufficiently addressed at the fair level, this is inescapably a societal problem and responsibility because all of society benefits from children who are raised with a healthy understanding of sexuality and intimacy. Now, this certainly doesn't mean that this law is the solution or even a good way to approach it, but in much of the dialogue I've seen around this topic, there's been a serious lack of acknowledgement of this as a problem at the societal level, without which this will never get addressed. We've had a couple decades of this as the norm and I think it's safe to say that admonishing parents and sex ed classes aren't doing it so a workable solution has to be found and it clearly can't rely wide swaths of parents suddenly changing their parental monitoring and technology purchasing practices, as nice as that would be.
  2. After the fall of #Robotyne, the flanks of #Verbove are dangerously wide open for the Russians. Plus the 12 km between the two villages will be extremely difficult to defend for Russia as reinforcements would have to travel under Ukrainian surveillance and artillery. Almost impossible. ➡️ My estimate would be therefore that Ukrainian troops will use the created gap to move southwards and bypass the heavy defenses north of #Novoprokopivka. If this happens, Russians must abandon their trenches around the village. The possible beginning of a domino effect north of #Tokmak. Fingers crossed.
  3. Well that's disturbing.
  4. Yesterday, two L-39 training planes collided near Zhytomyr. Three pilots were killed Among the dead was a well-known Ukrainian pilot with the call sign "Juice", who took part in the air defense of Kyiv. Juice (Andrei Pilshchikov) was a MiG-29 fighter pilot. With the start of the large-scale invasion, he participated in Kyiv's air defense. In interviews with The Washington Post, Financial Times CNN, Fox News, BBC News called on Western partners to provide Ukraine with modern fighter jets.
  5. Media: Ukraine strikes Russian positions in Crimea, dozens of casualties reported. The Ukrainian military, together with the Security Service of Ukraine, launched a drone strike against the 126th Brigade of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. There were dozens of casualties, Ukrainska Pravda news outlet reported, citing their source at the SBU.
  6. Sounds like the funds were not replenished
  7. Well that's because they were smoking on the plane... Investigators have a new version of the crash of #Prigozhin's plane - careless handling of ammunition on board during the flight, Russian media reported. This is connected with the fact that small arms, ammunition and grenades were found at the site of the plane's crash in the Tver Region, which apparently belonged to the passengers of the plane from among the #Wagner mercenaries. This is actually in line with the report about the flight attendent on board who told her family they were "repairing" the plane prior to takeoff. Edit: found it:
  8. Today, Portugal has confirmed its readiness to train Ukrainian pilots and engineers on F-16 aircraft, reports the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a meeting with representatives of the media and the President of Portugal. "We also discussed opportunities for expanding defense cooperation, in particular, the supply of Ukraine with armored medical equipment and equipment for demining," says Zelenskyy.

  10. I haven't seen this mentioned. It's at least worth noting. Prigozhin's second plane flew to Azerbaijan It flew out of Vnukovo airport and is heading to Baku. It is not known who is on board. Recall, yesterday after the disaster this plane made zigzags in the sky above Moscow, and then flew to St. Petersburg. Later, the business jet returned to Ostafievo airport near Moscow.
  11. Ukrainian GUR says it carried out a special operation - an amphibious landing, in the Tarkhankut peninsula of Crimea, where it destroyed several occupiers, as well as the S-400 air defence system. Russian officials tried to say the boats were destroyed, but independent sources are saying they all managed to get away.
  12. Time to see if Prigozhin had a killswitch.
  13. Interesting article on the American and British analysts' perceptions of the offensive. I think they make some good points about focusing on the main objective and allocating resources toward that goal. I also appreciated the specific example of the often-used, but vague, comparison between Soviet and NATO/Western style approaches: the issue of keeping competing factions within an army equally supplied. Ukraine’s Forces and Firepower Are Misallocated, U.S. Officials Say American strategists say Ukraine’s troops are too spread out and need to concentrate along the counteroffensive’s main front in the south https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/22/us/politics/ukraine-counteroffensive-russia-war.html?campaign_id=190&emc=edit_ufn_20230822&instance_id=100636&nl=from-the-times&regi_id=141347410&segment_id=142644&te=1&user_id=5edae170e2c7f9e85eb5207073ecafed
