Love hearing this cool Longhorn lore! My brother & his wife drove up for that ‘69 Hog game in his VW bug that had the rear side windows covered inside with homemade game signs he cut out from orange & white construction paper. After the game he said the local service stations wouldn’t let him fill up, but he barely made it to Oklahoma to find some gas so they could go back to Austin. That late afternoon/evening back in Austin, my wife and I decided to go to Mueller Airport to see the team return on their charter flight. We were amazed to discover that the airport parking lot was jammed full, so we had to park on a street to the west side - then walked across the large greenspace to the terminal. Once inside we saw a huge crowd of student fans overrunning all the waiting areas and out to the open but covered concourse. Airline passengers waiting for their flights were looking on with bewildered amazement, wondering what the hell was going on. Thousands of drunks were jam packed all over and spilled out to the arrival plane parking apron. Dozens of drunks managed to climb on top of the concourse roof to get a better view of the arrival. Finally, the airport staff managed to get the crazy crowd (later estimated at 10,000) to back away enough for the charter airliner to taxi into its slot. The DC-9 plane landing was delayed for a while so airport security could clear some drunks who were supposedly cavorting around out on the runway. Anyway, it was dark when the plane finally parked and shut down, then the rear stairway deployed straight down from below the tail end. After a few minutes DKR himself stepped partway down and looked wideyed at the raucous mob that started to cheer & scream. He disappeared quickly back into the plane but then exited with some staff & players. Somehow he managed to get the crowd to quiet down, and Coach Royal then gave a impromptu but brief speech thanking everyone for welcoming the National Champs home. The team then loaded on some buses while the crowd dispersed.
