No - with batter interference, batter is out, runner returns to base. The rules discussion on air was a total mess. No one in softball knows the rules of their own sport, even the umpires. Just a total clusterfuck. https://www.ncaapublications.com/p-4683-2024-and-2025-softball-rules-book.aspx 11.20.2 The batter shall not hinder the catcher or any other fielder from catching or throwing the ball by stepping out of the batter’s box, or intentionally hinder a player (for example, on a steal/pickoff throw or a play at home plate) while standing within the batter’s box. EFFECT—Delayed dead ball is signaled. The defensive team shall choose either the result of the play or the batter is out and each base runner must return to the last base that, in the umpire’s judgment, was legally touched at the time of the interference. Exceptions: (1) If a base runner is advancing to home plate and there are fewer than two outs, the base runner, instead of the batter, is out. (2) If the catcher is not making a play on a base runner but the batter or umpire interferes with the catcher’s return throw to the pitcher and the base runner, consequently, advances safely, the umpire should suspend play and return each base runner to the base occupied at the time of the accidental interference.

this. It was clearly batter interference. But the runner would have just returned to 1st, which she did any way because of the ump interference. So a stupid challenge IMO.

Mendoza going on and on about the rule needing to change, but the rulebook is clear. If the runner would have clearly been out, in the judgement of the umpire, no obstruction is called. It's akin to uncatchable on PI in football. The rule is fine. Umps are fucking idiots, as we saw over and over tonight.

Beth Mowens is the worst announcer in sports. Worse than Galindo. Just objectively terrible at her job in all aspects. Also, I hope Mike gets public confirmation from the umps as to exactly why that was obstruction per the rulebook.

One thing I love about baseball/softball is every time I watch a game, there's a quirky or wild moment where I say to myself "well, I've never fuckin seen that before." This game had shit like that in spades.

She did that last year in the post-season too. Slapping against great pitching and defense is tough.

https://www.ncaapublications.com/p-4683-2024-and-2025-softball-rules-book.aspx By the letter of the law that was not obstruction, by the NCAA softball rule book (see note 3): 9.5 Obstruction 9.5.1 Obstruction occurs when: 9.5.1.1 A defensive player, neither in possession of the ball nor in the act of fielding a batted ball, impedes a batter’s attempt to make contact with a pitch or impedes the progress of any runner who is legally running bases on a live ball. It can be intentional or unintentional. 9.5.1.2 A defensive player, while not in possession of the ball: a. Blocks any part of the leading edge of first, second or third base or home plate (as defined); or b. Otherwise blocks the runner from advancing or returning to a base. 9.5.2 The defensive player is not considered obstructing if they are in possession of the ball or they are, in the judgment of the umpire, making a legitimate reaction to the trajectory of the ball after it is thrown. Notes: 1. Once in possession of the ball, the defensive player can be positioned between the runner and the base/plate. 2. Obstruction may be ruled even though there is no physical contact. 3. If in the umpire's judgment, the runner would have clearly been put out then the obstruction is ignored. 4. Obstruction can occur on a force or tag play. She was hosed, ergo no obstruction. The umps have lost their damn minds over obstruction.

Canady's changeup is the best I've seen in a while. It's so hard to pick up and it's devastating

Right now, everyone is busting Reese inside, sometimes up and in, sometimes as a strike, sometime not, but almost always early in the count. She takes most of these, cause of the count, and when she doesn't she pulls it foul (which is natural when it's inside). I would have her work on trying to stay inside the ball on these and not turning on it so much. And hunt this pitch - especially early in the count. It's a home run ball if approached correctly. Gotta make the pitch caller stop calling this so much.

Crazy that Sam Landry and Sophia Simpson pitched for the same high school team. That's so much talent.

A lot of these girls throw 80+ pitches in bullpens multiple times a week. It's very different than baseball. She may tire out, but I wouldn't count on it.
