  3. Cross posting from the Gulag thread for those who don't venture into CR. Kilmar Abrego Garcia has moved to dismiss his case for selective and vindictive prosecution. It seems pretty obvious that this entire prosecution is to punish the guy for asserting his right to due process. https://thehill.com/homenews/5460679-abrego-garcia-pushes-to-toss-criminal-charges-he-says-amounts-to-vindictive-prosecution/

I thought this was a really interesting read on the data behind the recently claimed spike in job growth among native-born Americans. The gist of it is that this data can't be used to compare years as it was never designed for that purpose. For example, the data shows the US native-born population rose by 3 million people from 2024 to 2025, when typical annual population growth is closer to 500K. The 3 million number obviously isn't really. It's just a byproduct of how the data model is constructed, but it illustrates why it shouldn't be used for trends across years. https://jedkolko.substack.com/p/no-native-born-employment-has-not

  7. Man, I went online to restock Simparica Trio (heartworm/flea/tick prevention) and I'm finally fed up with how expensive it's gotten. $800 to get a 12 month supply for 2 dogs from our vet's pharmacy! I pulled the trigger on ordering from Australia. It was $250 (before tariffs) for the exact same thing and I didn't need to provide a prescription.
  8. You know this is fake, right? The infinity arrow at the end should be a dead giveaway. Apologies if you were posting it as a joke. For example, there are ~300K men ages 18-30 in the US, about 23K in each 1 year band. Going from 40% in 2023 to 50% in 2024 represents a shift of 29K+ men. Maybe you could explain that 1 year shift through a shit ton of born again virgins. Maybe they all realized they were in a hot tub or it was in the butt so that sex doesn't count any more. But my money is on fake.
  9. His bit is to post stuff he doesn't actually believe in order to get a reaction out of people. What exactly do you think trolling is?
  10. Toyota's FY26 Q1 (Apr-Jun) financial results came out yesterday. Tariffs cost the company $2.9 billion in the quarter. They've revised their operating income for the year down %15 ($4 billion). They reported an operating loss for North America in the first quarter, so it's hard to see how they can eat the tariffs for much longer. https://qz.com/toyota-earnings-trump-tariffs-profits
  11. PBS is the shade tree, you ignorant slut.
  12. Yesterday my wife asked Alexa to set a time that didn't make any sense to me and as a joke I instinctively shouted, "Alexa, belay that order!". I was surprised and delighted when Alexa replied, "Timer cancelled." I felt like a Star Fleet officer.
  13. Surprisingly not seeing much talk about the ~250 CECOT prisoners being released to Venezuela over the weekend. Lots of stories out there on this.
  14. So, I don't see any mention of the news over the weekend that ~250 Venezuelans were release from CECOT and returned to Venezuela. The Trump admin is apparently claiming that this was El Salvador's deal, and the US wasn't involved. At the same time, the US is claiming that Venezuela has agreed to send any of these back to the US if necessary/requested. And lawyers are already asking to bring them back again
  15. Wasn't the whole justification for sending people to third-countries that their home countries wouldn't accept them or that they had credible fears of persecution/abuse in their home countries? If so, is this another example of the government lying to the courts? Maybe I'm misremembering.
  16. I've been trying to figure out the right time/place/thread to mention this...but I'm going to be keeping my eye on Camp El Tesoro outside Fort Worth. It's a regular summer camp, but one week each summer they function as a children's grief camp known as Camp El Tesoro de la Vida. https://www.campfirefw.org/camps/grief-camp/ From their website: My wife volunteered as a counselor years ago and we have friends who have worked closely with the camp for many years. Most of the kids who attend have lost a parent, sibling or caregiver. Their policy has always been that they'll find a way to fund any kid who needs to be there, so they work closely with Cook's Children in Fort Worth and rely on scholarships a great deal. It's a great organization and I'm curious if they may look into expanding their services in the aftermath of the flood this year. Like I said, I'll be keeping my eye on it and will provide updates if they are doing anything to "recruit" campers/siblings impacted by floods or if they have fundraising needs.
  17. This story seems to cast a lot of doubt on the "there's nothing we could have done" narrative. Glad the folks at this particular camp were on top of things. Quick action by one Texas summer camp leads to timely evacuations ahead of deadly flood
  18. This one seems especially vile.
  19. So, now we're shutting down legal pathways for highly educated non-citizens to work here. Is it an attack on immigrants? Is it an attack on higher education? whynotboth.gif
  20. Isn't this the organization where the new Trump-appointed head just gave their building away to the administration because Trump liked it?
