  1. Thanks for the reply and I share your love of Monterosso and Italy. We’ve been to Monterosso a couple of times, one of which involved the similar train from Nice (we were coming from Saint-Tropez that time). If we book this trip to the South of France, I’d like to find the French equivalent of Monterosso. Cassis looks promising, as well as Villefranche-sur-mer or Antibes. I don’t have much interest in Nice or Cannes.
  2. I wrote letters to John Cornyn, Ted Cruz, and Craig Goldman today. There’s so much I could’ve written about but I felt it would be most effective to focus on a single topic for now, so that was ICE in this case. I made sure to keep it civil, made it clear that I am a registered Texas voter, and tried to appeal to their humanity. I asked for specific interventions: Remove ICE from Minneapolis Review protocols before any ICE operations continue anywhere in the U.S., including the removal of all masks Identify those involved in the RG and AP killings and allow MN to conduct a legal investigation in these shootings Consider the role of Trump and Noem in these events and if removal from office is justified I’m sure many will say this is a waste of time and it will fall on deaf ears, and I would 95% agree with that. However, I’ve never written a congressman about anything, and my hope is that many people will also flood them with similar concerns. Perhaps an uptick in messaging from pissed off constituents in an election year will wake someone up. Let them know that blind allegiance to an increasingly unpopular regime is not supported. I would encourage others to do the same. Maybe it’s a waste of time, but it’s better than whining on surly and Reddit and twitter.
  3. I had time to listen to the Carney speech today and it’s pretty incredible. Major props to him. It’s also very sobering and depressing that even if the U.S. somehow recovers from this surreal nightmare in the next 1-3 years, a lot of our previous allies are going to be very reluctant to welcome us back and restore the previous world order. It’s quite likely gone for good, which sucks for our kids that 78 million people elected a narcissistic sociopath who torched our standing on the global stage in a span of 12 months.
  4. For those in Tarrant County, early voting in SD9 runoff between Taylor Rehmet (D) and Leigh Wambsnagans (MAGA) has started. Please make time to vote.
  5. Wife and I are considering a South of France trip this summer so I’m interested in any recs. We went to Saint-Tropez as part of a bigger France-Italy trip few years ago and liked it. We are thinking this trip would be 7-8 nights purely in the South of France, with a little time in Provence and also some time along the water. Perhaps fly into Marseille, rent a car, make our way east, and fly home from Nice. Places of interest include Cassis and Parc National des Calanques, Aix-en-Provence, Antibes, Eze, and Villefranche-sur-Mer. Avignon or a visit to some Chateneauf du Pape vineyards would be cool, but likely sends us the wrong direction. Mainly in search of some nice boutique hotels, great food and wine, good weather, good scenery. Any specific recs?
  6. Heading home from Breckenridge. Stayed in an awesome house on Peak 8 and had some good friends with us, but the skiing was kinda shit. A lot of that was due to poor snow so not Breck’s fault, but the terrain was also kind of boring. Granted, the top of the mountain was closed and obviously there is more advanced terrain up there, but the lower part of the mountain was way too flat and mediocre for my tastes. Most of their blues felt like they would be greens elsewhere, and the only blacks we could find were black purely for the presence of moguls and not for steepness. Again, the snow is obviously not great anywhere in Colorado right now, but I could imagine what it should be like and I don’t think it’s a mountain I’ll be frequenting. The highlight of the trip for me, and what changes it from an underwhelming trip to a positive experience, was getting my 3 year old daughter into ski school. We had her briefly in skis last year at Telluride, but this was her first time actually doing full day group lessons and I think she did alright for a very young beginner surrounded by strangers. I can’t wait to actually ski together and I’m excited she’s starting to learn.
  7. Then maybe they should quit voting R unless they like the thought of their grandkids dying in a school shooting, camp flood, winter storm, measles outbreak, etc. All things that Texas should be working harder to prevent or mitigate, but the party in control only cares about corporate profits and wacky religious agendas. Zero accountability or willingness to change from disasters.
  8. I’m close to the point of just accepting that shit like this should go ahead and happen. Let Trump dictate interest rates and tariffs and get his fat fingers in every facet of our society and break it all and give us runaway inflation and let the AI bubble pop and maybe we’ll also see some companies like Tesla and Amazon and Meta take one on the cheek. Give us what we voted for. Throw in some measles and increased flu deaths and lack of cancer research and basic science. America is broken so just smash it up so we can pick up the pieces and hopefully start something new.
  9. For the other distance runners here, what are you doing for carbs and fluids throughout long runs and on race day? I was doing a GU gel about every 5 miles, so that would be 4-5 gels for a full marathon. I was also using Propel electrolyte packets (zero carbs) in my water bottle, or drinking the water and Gatorade provided on a race day course. That usually works for a ~15 mile run, but I've had problems in the past with hitting the wall around mile 21-22 of a full marathon. I've been reading up on it and realized I am way too low on my carb intake. I'm hearing people using GU every 20 minutes, or equivalent carbs from gels and drink mixes to get about 100g carbs per hour. Looking at different running resources and podcasts, there seems to be a lot of discussion about this the last couple of years. I guess I'm a little behind, but this is an easy adjustment that can hopefully give a big performance boost and avoid the dreaded hitting the wall. It seems painfully obvious now. Lately, I've been doing a GU every 4 miles instead of 5 miles and I've replaced my Propel packets with a combo of Tailwind and Maurten drink mixes, both of which contain carbs. I've noticed good results on long runs and I'd like to get the GU gels every 3-3.5 miles if my stomach tolerates it, which so far, it has. Curious what regimens other people use.
  10. It would at least be nice if one of the major streaming services of live TV would offer an old school version of their app. I want my dad to have an AppleTV that auto-launches a version of YouTube TV that only has the live guide. No home page with tiles and suggestions. How hard is that? AppleTV can’t launch a default app on startup. YouTube TV doesn’t have a setting for Live only, or even to default to the Live tab.
  11. Dumb question perhaps, but can Minnesota law enforcement issue a warrant for his arrest and charge him with murder? What happens if everyone believes this was murder except for ICE, DHS, and Trump? Sure, even if convicted, maybe Trump pardons him, but make that play out.
  12. There have been countless low points since that orange pedophile sack of shit took over, but this is near the top. Heartbreaking. And the orange fucker is already posting obvious lies as if we all don’t have video of it.ā€œThen Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.ā€ And a large chunk of his supporters will believe it because they are either incredibly stupid or they hate brown people so much that they’re willing to accept a dead white mother of 2 as collateral damage. In their view, brown people are bad and their lives must be made miserable, therefore ICE is doing the Lord’s work. Even if the midterms have a blue wave, even if we make it to 2028 and a Dem president gets voted in, I think it will take 2 generations to eradicate the complete inhumanity of millions of Americans. It’s depressing. I miss 2015 so much.
  13. This country and the world in general are much worse off because of people like you.
  14. I do worry about that part with YouTube TV. It's hard for him to wrap his mind around streaming services/apps and the lack of channel numbers. I think he also gets confused when he comes to my house and can't find the Live TV section of YouTube TV, but maybe it would be a little better if he did it at home on a regular basis. Perhaps sticking with the DirecTV service via the app (either on AppleTV or Roku TV) is a safer bet. I haven't used their app so I don't know how user friendly it is. I suppose I could install it on my AppleTV with his account and see what that would be like.
  15. I don't much care for the AppleTV remote either, and I know my dad would hate it, which is why I would look into a universal remote if we go that route. I've used the Harmony Smart Control remote for years now and it works great. It can learn almost any function and control any device, but it has the look and feel of an old school remote without a clunky or complicated touch screen. It looks like Harmony remotes have been discontinued but they are still easy to find on eBay and that could be useful, unless there is something better available now. A quick search shows a lot of universal remotes have a touch screen, which even though I feel pretty tech savvy, I think touch screen remotes are pretty dumb and pointless.
  16. My dad is 70 years old and struggles with technology. If it doesn’t work the way he expects, he gets easily frustrated and angry, which then upsets my mom. I would like to simplify things for him as much as possible to minimize the frequency of problems. Over the holidays, I noticed his TV setup is a bit difficult even for me to use. He has a Samsung LCD that is about 3-4 years old and he mainly watches DirecTV (connected through a box with HDMI) on that, but sometimes needs to use Netflix or Amazon in the event a football game is streaming through one of those services. Just using DirecTV is a little clunky IMO, but using the Samsung’s awful interface to navigate to Netflix or Amazon and then back to DirecTV is a disaster, even for me. There has to be a way to improve this for him. So my question is, what is the simplest hardware and streaming solution to look into for an older person with these struggles? FWIW, at my house, I have a Samsung TV in which the Samsung interface never gets used because I run everything through AppleTV and I have a Harmony remote that changes inputs on all devices. I use YouTube TV instead of DirecTV, as well as all the usual streaming services. I personally think that is simple, but it’s also what I am used to. Maybe a similar setup could work for him? I especially like the Harmony remote because the worst case scenario is to power off and start again, but maybe there is still something easier like a Roku TV or a different smart remote?
  17. If you asked me to fill out a bracket of how I wanted each game to go, I’d be close to 100%.
