Markets still falling like whoa
I don't konw why people think the Fed is going to step in to save the Market. At this point, the electorate has gotta swim through it's own shit river and let the economy shake out. Tariffs are sort of a one time inflationary event (at least in theory). They aren't the classic too much money chasing too few goods. Once they induce a recession, prices will top out/stall and the Fed can start thinking about cutting rates. Again.....in theory. But theory doesn't account for a Mad King.

I think the EU would like to negotiate a way out of this, as opposed to the Chinese, who neither want to back down and would like to use this as the moment to assert it's hegemony. The problem for the EU is whether they can get Navarro off the ridiculous VAT stance.

Part of the problem is Wall Street seems to think there is an adult in the room somewhere that is eventually going to step in and make this go away. But there isn't. If the pain gets bad enough, and the recession deep enough, you may be able to pull together a veto proof majority in Congress to end this madness, but we are still a long, long way off on that. The Members are just beginning to stir and realize that maybe they shouldn't have broadly delegated the ability for the President to set Tariff rates. We've got a ways to go before enough GOP Senator's and House Members have constituents beating down their doors. Not CR-ing, just trying to put some process in perspective. If we get a couple of weeks of 4-5% daily falls, maybe something could come together quickly, but otherwise, slow bleed in the red is going to take till fall (probably past the Virginia off year elections, assuming the GOP gets crushed) before Congress will stir into action.- Markets still falling like whoa

What the fuck are you babbling on about? We tried it his way. For like 300 fucking years. It was called mercantilism, and Europeans had free forced labor to go with it. By every measure free trade has improved the lives of virtually every person it touches by any measure. It’s not perfect. The capitalist system isn’t. But to argue the haphazard and random way in which he is applying and taking away tariffs represents any cohesive vision of a post free trade economic system is, frankly, stupid.- Русский корабль - иди нахуй

What if we also added in Pacific partners (Japan, Korea, Australia), but not China, to create a huge Pacific Free Trade Zone that would boost economies and build mutually reenforcing alliances against Beijing's growing military adventurism and keep them from implementing belt and road in central and south america? Oh. wait. that was the Trans Pacific Partnership.- Non-political tariffs thread
The thing is, if you were serious about reshoring, you wouldn't just roll over exisiting tax cuts. You'd tell the American people, this is the new direction of America, and we are going to have to redesign our tax code, entitlement system, and industrial policy to accomodate it. Instead, it's basically trade policy the way my buddy plays golf: grip it and rip it.- Non-political tariffs thread

The most obvious is Smoot-Hawley, which took the damage from from the Stock Market collapse of 1929 and the follow on bank runs, started a global trade war and took a bad recession and made it the Great Depression. The McKinley Tariffs of 1893 excerbated the Panic of 1893 by dramatically raising prices and restricting economic activity. The Panic of 1837 was brought on by land speculation in the West, as well as an effort to recapitalize the English Banking system, sucking money out of the East Coast banks. But tariffs on Agriculutural products implemented at the insistence of Southern Politicians to protect domestic markets excerbated the problem. I guess it's more accurate to say that substantial tariffs have a propensity to suppress economic activity and greatly excerbated existing poor economic conditions. From an macro economic perspective: I'm not going to rehash the third week of Economics 101. You either took the class and implicitly understand tariffs are bad for economies (whether they are a net overall good for a society is a different conversation) or you don't. As to other countries: Most of the world abides by a series of global trade treaties or submits to binding decisions by the World Trade Organization. If a country has imposed a tariff, is usually because the other side has agreed it's okay, lost a WTO case, or just doesn't care because it's not a source of much trade. We are currently under a trade agreement with Mexico and Canada, that Donald Trump negotiated. He's angry about his own deal.- Trump’s America
