  1. I saw them do this but in Austin. Really cool idea for a bluegrass cover.

    Now that's just not fair.

    FIFY

I know conservatives suck at comedy (with some exceptions - Jay Mohr (kind of a Catholic style conservative), Norm McDonald (leans conservative)), but this tweet demonstrates a lack of even understanding what comedy is.

Go read Alicia Keys' wikipedia page. She might not suit the tastes of JimmyJazz and BrickHorn (who I both love - respeck), but she is no hack.

When I was at the LSD Tour (Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, and Dwight Yoakum), I got on wikipedia and did some statistical checks: Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, and Dwight Yoakum have a combined 49 grammy nominations and 8 grammy wins. Taylor Swift has 10 grammy wins. Taylor Swift is basically just the device through which the talent of 100 writers, producers, musicians, sound engineers, etc. is delivered. It's like someone giving out an award for the world's fastest jet and handing it to the dude who painted it. Also, Grammys don't mean shit. But I am glad they are expanding the Americana & regional genre awards.

Just block out the "me too" / women invasion of Congress subtext and enjoy the tunes for what they are. The ones Alicia does anyways.

Only watching because I love Alicia Keys. This medley is awesome.

This cast and group of writers just might get SNL out of the wilderness.
  10. Oh, fuck, forgot.... Tool - No Quarter (Led Zeppelin) - Worth the entire price of admission. And I did really enjoy the whole concert even though I'm not a huge fun and had only decided to go at the last minute when a friend with an extra ticket reached out.
  11. I'm especially interested in hearing about one-off covers that bands worked up for just one gig, e.g., the Stones doing Waylon for their first Austin show in like 30 years.
  12. No criteria other than the above. Black Crowes - Can't You Hear Me Knocking (Rolling Stones) Rolling Stones - Bob Wills is Still the King (Waylon Jennings) - Zilker Park, Austin The Dead - El Paso (Marty Robbins) - Requires context, because the Grateful Dead probably played that shit 1,000+ times. It was at Willie's Fourth of July Picnic. It had rained a little bit and when the Dead came out for the second set, the sky was clearing, and Bob Weir said, "hey check out that rainbow." The crowd turned around and there was a got damn rainbow behind us. Then Willie came out and jammed on the song and when they sang the lyring "Leavin' Texas, fourth day of July," everyone went "whooaoaaaaaaaa." Ryan Adams - Down in a Hole (Alice in Chains) - Hey, his Wonderwall is great, but this is his cover gem for me. Galactic - When the Levee Breaks (Led Zeppelin) - This is a fairly common cover for them, but it was in October 2005 and the subject matter was extremely relevant. The singer they had screamed from the pits of hell.
  13. My absolute ideal guitar is the G&L Classic Bluesboy in clear orange. Except maybe with a matching headstock.
  14. 2:32 is the greatest thing ever
  15. Why did I not know this existed until now?
  16. Someone will be cloning the "Sundragon" within months and that person will be making a lot of money.
  17. BRING IT BACK, BOSS!!! RAWRRRRR!!!! There's one for sale at Rockin Robin for $250, and I'm still tempted.
  18. Wood
  19. I went to guitar center and played a Nashville Tele through that new Supro Blues King. Pretty fun. Just like all your moms, she’s a dirty little thing. With the master knob you don’t even really need the drive setting. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. Dunlop stuff in my living room: MXR Phaser, Way Huge Swollen Pickle, MXR Iso Brick, Cry Baby Wah, and 98% of my guitar picks.
  21. BTW, later this month two girls are staying with me while they audition for the Houston Metro Dance Company. I'll report back regarding the three-way. Old Grandioso is going to be smooth AF
  22. Photographer came by today and I'm getting the photos tonight. Hell yes, UTPhil2006.
