  1. I can only speak for public schools, but anecdotally the educational experience is much different for boys than for girls. I think to say girls are more naturally inclined to learn than boys is ridiculous to be frank To clarify I believe, and data show, the pendulum has swung fairly far to favoring girls over boys
  2. I try to avoid Reddit. What is the gist?
  3. Llook at these douchebags https://www.cbsnews.com/news/meta-trial-mark-zuckerberg-ai-glasses/
  4. Really? What scores
  5. There is a reason I posted the quote about empathy not being a zero sum game. I am not trying to get into a tit for tat on who has things worse. As the father of two sons and two daughters, I am very emotionally invested in all of them doing well. There is a clear trend of boys and young men falling further and further behind relative to girls and young women in terms of HS academics, college graduation, entrance into and graduation from graduate and professional schools, and ultimately earning potential. The reasons for these are multi factorial, but way down the list is the idea that many or most of these boys who are falling behind are “mediocre” You may not like Galloway, and I don’t really care for a lot of his bluster, but he does seem to care and I do not think it’s a grift. He has a lot of good things to say regarding why teenage boys and young men are gravitating towards toxic role models and how to combat this trend As far as the education gap (which I believe is a symptom of bigger issues, but is a huge problem in and of itself), this is a pretty good summary. When my eldest graduated HS 4 years ago the top 3 and 9 of the top 10 were girls. Pew Research CenterU.S. women are outpacing men in college completion, inclu...Today, 47% of U.S. women ages 25 to 34 have a bachelor’s degree, compared with 37% of men.
  6. My eldest found out that a course that she really wanted to take was canceled literally the first day of class this semester. It wasn’t even particularly controversial at least by course name, but the prof decided he wasn’t going to teach it. There has been a significant brain drain amongst faculty as well. And they won’t be coming back.
  7. Bbetween this shit and the auto admits we are headed for a steep decline in quality of graduates.
  8. Bumped because of a tangent on the midterms thread. “Empathy is not a zero sum game”
  9. Thanks. I took a quick look and the first page is a lot of quips. I’ll see how the rest goes and maybe post over there if anyone is interested
  10. That’s baby shit compared to what UT’s student body president has been doing. In collusion with the UT admin btw
  11. The way you keep referring to mediocrity led me to suspect as much. We have a real problem with young men in this society and it has little to do with ability and aptitude. It probably merits its own thread, but I really don’t have the energy to delve into it. I will say Galloway is an arrogant prick, but he is one of the few who is making an honest attempt at addressing it.
  12. Do you have a son? ETA if yes age(s) and public or private schools
  13. I wouldn’t have believed it if it wasn’t my cousin’s kid. I’m assuming the secondary chute partially deployed but he blacked out prior to impact. He’s got 100% disability mostly from ptsd related to that and some shit that happened while working as an “advisor” in Somalia
  14. I’m not writing a dissertation about how they are linked. I’m pretty sure most here understand you can’t have freedom without safety. Acknowledging that is not conflating the two. Also I think most here understand we are in dangerous times and the main threat to both our safety and freedom is within. That has not been the case throughout most of my lifetime.
  15. This is pedantry even for you. Have a great day
  16. Patients I have taken care of and family members of mine have had the following injuries while deployed stateside: Multi trauma from MVC while on duty (multiple) Grenade blast from another soldier’s errant toss during “live” training GSW from another soldier due to negligent discharge. Interestingly my cousin’s son had a near miss from one of these and after that happened I started asking my patients out of curiosity and it’s pretty common 😳 Also same cousin’s son was doing his qualifying jump for airborne and his primary and secondary chutes failed to open. He blacked out and hit the ground with no fractures or significant soft tissue injuries. He then did his qualifying jump a few weeks later. Fuck that
  17. I disagree. I have taken care of many active duty military and vets over the years and all have done their part to keep us safe, even if only as a deterrent from a would be bully. Shamefully we have become that bully but we still need our troops. Even in “peacetime” it’s one of the most dangerous occupations: training accidents; vehicle crashes, hell jumping off the back of a transport with 90bs of gear and then hiking for miles is going to take its toll. As Demi Moore’s character said when asked why she likes Dawson and Downey: Because they stand on a wall and say, "Nothing's going to hurt you tonight, not on my watch.”
  18. RIP former Prince Andrew
  19. Harris County and its MSA could flip Texas tomorrow. There is incredible voter apathy there, and to be honest I don’t blame them one bit. Most of those potential voters were either adults or children growing up when Democrats were in control and really haven’t seen a material change under Republicans. No one has ever really tried to engage them and explain how things can be different for them. It was the biggest mistake of Alfred’s horribly run campaign imo. I hope Talarico avoids that this time
  20. My daughter interned for a lobbying firm for a couple of years in undergrad and knows a lot of the insider baseball in the state leg and the Texas delegation in the House. She describes Crockett as a classic “mean girl” so this type of behavior when she doesn’t get her way is not surprising. I think there is a tremendous amount of outrage fatigue among those not on the far ends of the political spectrum and this is likely to backfire bigly on her. Watching Obama’s demeanor in that clip reminded me of how he never gets flustered and I see Talarico channeling that in his appearances; whether organic or international, I think it’s exactly the correct tack for this election cycle.
  21. Ted Lieu did not say the Epstein files SHOW Trump raping children quit posting bullshit like this. It says there are allegations of him raping children which we all fucking know
  22. Iit’s about time for the trollbots to come out saying talarico is too religious, right?
