Winter Weather 2026 - I Can Haz Cold Front?
I bought a box full of every replacement part I could need. I won't live long enough to run out. After that it's my son's problem. 😁 Maybe "Good things about growing old"?

I had these installed in a recent remodel. Not so humble brag.

The Beatles - Get Back (by Peter Jackson)
To the best of my memory Chet Atkins was the only Gretsch player. Gretsch was a country guitar. Everybody played Fenders and Gibson...when they could afford to move up from Airline and Silvertone. Yes, even the instruments were revolutionary. And Vox amps? What was that shit? Get ya' a Fender, or Gibson if you were country. Vox? Get outa here with that shit!

The Beatles - Get Back (by Peter Jackson)
I have never figured out why the sound of that screaming sort of gets me in the feels. I finally realized that that sound is the sound of unrestrained, inexhaustible joy. Nowhere else have I ever heard so much happiness, all at once, all in the same place. If they hadn't released all that joy they would have exploded, like the guy's head in Scanners.

The Beatles - Get Back (by Peter Jackson)
I have tried to explain it to my kids but they sort of glaze over like, "Sure Dad. Sure". I can't explain "Beatle Mania" any more than my parents can explain their feeling when they heard about Pearl Harbor. I'm not trying to say that the gravity of Beatle Mania was the same as Pearl Harbor, but the difficulty/impossibility of explaining it to a younger generation is somewhat similar. You simply "Had to be there". There were kids who didn't catch The Mania, but I'd say a large majority did. Beatle Mania engulfed us. It was the main topic of conversation in my group of friends. The hair. The boots. The devil may care attitude, which perfectly hit a rebellious teenager right in the gut. The stage presence, and my God, the music. We had been listening to what was essentially manipulated 12 bar blues, some of our parent's old music (some of which I still love), and "hits" coming out of the Aldon Music New York commercial music machine. All good fun music, but nothing, absolutely nothing like what The Beatles were doing. The complexity, making 12 bar blues rock seem juvenile. The harmony that only The Everly Brothers had done before hand. The beat which was similar but different to existing rock songs...they were after all "The BEATles." (I have tried to explain the new beat to friends. All I can come up with is that their music was "boom, chic, boom boom chic" and we had been listening to "boom, chic chic, boom chic".) I'm not a drummer, but it was new and different. Subtle but different. Hit after Hit. A guy here and there had a really good hit, but nobody had the abundance of fantastic songs. Hit after hit. It seemed impossible. And they were good at it, very good at it. The time they spent in Germany had essentially perfected their craft. We had to grow our hair out, greatly pissing off our fathers. We had to wear Beatle Boots, which were crappy, cheaply made uncomfortable shoes. But we had to emulate The Beatles. Had to. We listened to the radio and read everything we could trying to find out when the new release would be. Our girls were in love with them, which pissed us off, but the music was so good, and they were so fucking cool, that we loved them too. You had to be there.

The Beatles - Get Back (by Peter Jackson)
Watching that trailer reminded me that the sound of the girls screaming...that was real. Today we are used to fake sound tracks and effects, laugh tracks. That screaming was real. I read a quote from John I think that they didn't like it because they couldn't hear the performance. It was so loud they couldn't hear the amps they were standing right next to. For a few minutes those girls lost their fucking minds. It's almost frightening, but it's cool as fuck also.

I have graduated after 20 years
I graduated before most of y'all were out of diapers but I still have the occasional dream about walking into a test that I forgot to study for, or a paper that I didn't write or I can't find the classroom. Y'all have those anxiety dreams? I hate when that happens.

I caught the cancer
I don't want to start a religious discussion, but I think that most people believe that we should "help each other". Be it religious or otherwise I think we all get a good feeling out of helping others. It makes society "work properly". It makes us "proper" human beings. The other side of that coin is that there must be a person to receive that "help". The person who receives the help, the "weaker" of the two, is serving a vital role in the life of the giver. It's not a role any of us like, but it serves an important part in the lives of human beings. It also provides an outlet for the recipient to feel and express gratitude. Gratitude does not mean groveling. Gratitude is a sincere and joyful thing that helps the whole of humanity. To receive help is a vital part of how it all works.

Trivial Things That Make You Surly
Fucking coat hangers! They always "mingle" with the hanger next to them making it impossible to remove a single hanger from the rod, and nine times out of ten, one or the other falls to the floor. I could always just toss the item over the back of a chair but I'm trying to be a grown up. "Adulting" as the youngsters say. Fucking coat hangers!

Steve Cropper has passed
The King asked Little David why he always played at the same place on the neck. "Those other guys play all up and down the neck, but you just stay in the same place", said the King. "Why?" Little David said, "Those other guys are looking for it. I've flat found it".

Gun to your head: name your favorite book ever
Thurber Carnival by James Thurber. This will soon be obsolete as the jokes and references will be too far gone in time to be funny or to even make sense as the 1920's and 30's move farther away. Mark Twain seems timeless but I think his time is soon coming.

Getting old sucks
In the last 18 months 3 good friends have died. All within a few months of my age. Sucks on two levels. First I will miss them like crazy. They were big part of how my world works. Second I'm constantly looking over my shoulder for the dude in the black robe with bony fingers and a scythe. I'm not ready. I've still got shit to do.

Getting old sucks
Below a cut and paste of an email I just sent to my sister. Getting old does indeed suck, but if you allow the good memories to come in they will. I've been lucky. I have had, mostly, a good life, so most of my memories are good. "The Old Home Place" and Mr. Rhodes shrimp boat were places of poverty, not crushing poverty, but the people there were poor. The memories are not about money. The good memories are about places, experiences, and people. I've been lucky. I have had a good life. "I love these pictures you send me. My mind is getting sadly weaker, but the visual cue of these photos, 75 years old, brings a flood of memories. Good memories. I loved "The Old Home Place". LOVED it! My life is so much richer for having been there and allowed to play and explore. I have a background of memories...The Old Home Place, Mr. Rhodes shrimp boat, an unairconditioned bedroom on Bentwood Rd with the windows open through which I could hear prop airplanes taking off. I can hear the timbre of the engines and propellers cutting the air, I can hear it now. I can't remember the name of people I meet now, but I can remember the sound of a Braniff prop airplane."

Things you really just don't get...
I thought originally it was to show off an expensive belt buckle but then it became the norm. And also it's stupid as shit.
