College Saving, TTP and 529
Kids (twins) just started their junior year of high school. Their 529 funds have been parked in the Iowa 529 plan since they were in diapers, and have done very well there. But, like most plans, Iowa investment options are limited and do not include low risk "safe" investments for short term savings. The most popular plans on this thread - Nevada and Utah - are the same. Kind of like not leaving all of your savings in the stock market as you are approaching retirement, I feel the need to get some or all of their college money out of more risky investments as they are about to start college. South Carolina and Alabama, however, have bank deposit (CD/Money Market) options that are currently paying in the 5.25% range, with nominal to zero expense/fee. They - Alabama in particular - also have various Vanguard and other low expense funds if I want to divide the money into multiple investments, with some (and the ability to increase over time) the amount locked down in a bank fund. Anyone have experience with South Carolina or Alabama 529s? Or, other 529 with a bank savings option? Or, just want to talk me down off of the ledge?

Giving a kid a credit card
For both our benefit. For them to start learning better budget responsibility, and for me to better know who is spending what. For example, having our respective Amazon purchases charged to separate cards. Also, as someone mentioned upthread, to avoid screwing my world every time one of them loses their card.

Giving a kid a credit card
My kids - about to turn 17 - are overdue to have a credit card. It would be great for them to start building a credit history, but the real catalyst is tracking their spending. I want to get them off of my statement - for them to each have their own statement that details their spending. My first thought was to get a business card (which I don't legitimately qualify for), naming them as employees, but bank and wire fraud, and all that shit.... Is there a solution other than opening two new credit card accounts for them, with me as co-signor/guarantor?

Gumbo
I think tomato is also the primary difference for gumbo, which tends to mean Cajun is also a darker, richer roux. I think there is also a tendency (but, not a hard rule) for Cajun to less likely have okra. And, for me, but I don't think actually accurate, I tend to associate Creole as seafood (with tomato and okra) and Cajun as chicken and andouille (with a dark, no tomato, roux).

Welcome to Costco .....
And, knowing this, I am not going to sit in a line a 5 cars, when a pump on the "wrong side" has a line of 2 cars....

Gumbo
Absolutely yes regarding potato salad. but more so on Cajun style, rather than Creole.

The Italy Thread
Modena: Acetaia di Giorgio is a small artisanal Balsamic producer with a terrific tour and tasting. It is well located to follow with highly recommended lunch at Trattoria Ermes. Ravenna: The Byzantine mosaics are spectacular. Allow a few hours to visit the 4-5 primary sites, which are clustered fairly close together.

AAA worth it?
The Hertz rate with the standard AAA discount is better than the rates offered with other discounts, e.g, AARP. And, I can almost always find a AAA weekend or weekly rental promo code for additional savings. Bottom line, I can never find a better rate for a major at-airport rental, than what I get with Hertz through AAA. Battery service has also saved my ass several times.

I don't think he will (or should) be the pick, but I am bemused by the concept of fanning the flames of MAGA bigotry.

It was properly stored, except for two post-flood periods, totaling about 3 years, when it stood upright in a box in either a conditioned storage facility or a friend's house.- Wine
- Sous Vide Recipes and Shit
Bought a beef tenderloin at Costco today that I want to sous vide and then sear for dinner tomorrow. Should I sous vide whole, or slice and then sous vide the individual filets? If sous vide whole, should I then sear whole and then slice, or slice and sear the filets as I would any other flat steak?- Partition of Jointly Owned Ranch Property

Friday lunch, I was eating a plate of enchiladas at the Molina's bar trying hard to ignore a group of MAGA debating who would replace Biden if he stepped down, when I foolishly interjected with my view that the democrats had no option other than Harris. My theory was that it is impossible for any democrat to win without large turnout from Black women and that throwing Harris under the bus would alienate black women. Their immediate response was that Harris is not black. I recognized my foolishness at attempting to have an intelligent conversation with them and returned to my enchiladas, which slammed.- 2024 Presidential Election Thread - Let's keep the party going.

I get the frustration, but we are only on day 3 of a 2.5 million without power event. According to Harris County Flood Control District, after Ike in 2008, “2.2 million CenterPoint customers without power; 75% of power restored by day 10”. We were without even longer - 14 days. CenterPoint is no doubt less than perfect, but I think people have unrealistic expectations - Wine
