Do We Have a Christ Followers Thread?
I agree. The concepts surrounding things like “once saved, always saved” render flat the depth of scripture. There’s too much biblical discussion of people falling away, endurance to the end, working out salvation with fear and trembling, etc. to boil it down to trite truisms like this. The “once saved, always saved” crowd often tries to wave this away with something about people falling away having never been saved in the first place, but that seems like a distinction without a difference. According to Jesus, yes. See Matthew 20, the parable of the workers of the vineyard. If God gives me a wonderful and undeserved gift, why should I be jealous if someone “less deserving” gets the same gift? It’s not my gift to give.

In too many cases, virulent racism is the law. Also, the character arc of Curt Schilling is pretty amazing. Bloody sock to a fraudulent and racist scam.

CR: COVID-19 --Political Talk
Lying suggests that they’re hiding a more accurate count. Tracking this through large parts of India’s population has to be almost impossible. But yeah, their numbers have to be way low.

2020 Democratic National Convention
Here I was thinking how gentle Obama was with Trump and how startlingly optimistic the tone was. It’s probably the right tone and certainly true to Obama’s character, but when I heard that Obama was coming for Trump, I was picturing the Michael Scott roast.

CR: COVID-19 --Political Talk
I’ve avoided watching anything with the pillow guy, but watching the Anderson Cooper interview, that’s maybe the sleaziest thing I’ve ever seen on TV. At least Benny Hinn and the other televangelists have great stage shows.

Surly Megathread of destruction and doom. [BEWARE VERY DOOMY]
This is some sort of Zen koan. The more I reflect on it, it becomes both more profound and more petty. It’s both an insult and a commentary on our collective and individual brokenness while simultaneously commenting on the universal interconnectivity of mankind. It’s petty and grand at the same time; infinitesimally small and unfathomly enormous. It’s ETA Hoffmann’s terror of infinite yearning meets a 21st century pantheistic identity wrapped up in a Don Rickles id. Aren’t we all kind of people, aren’t we all.

Adding to this question, what’s the official justification for the mailbox removal that’s been going around?

College Football in 2020 in danger?
I suspect that some of the universities starting out on campus will be trying to hold off moving online until their add/drop refund deadline.

Same here. It’s the same place where I check my registration. I live in Georgia, where suppressing the vote is our state motto(Noli numerare suffragio), but we can still effectively check to see if we’ve been disenfranchised.

On the bright side of COVID 19...
On a less trivial note, I suspect that in the coming years and decades, we'll see many medical advances directly developing from this one moment. Having the entire world working on one problem has its advantages.

Kamala Harris 2020
These particular tweets look pretty vapidly flip-floppy without a good explanation, but in general, changing your opinion based on new information or even reconsidering old information is a good thing. The cultural resistance to “flip-flopping” is a celebration of rigid thinking. If your first opinion about everything never changes, there’s probably not a lot of deep thinking going on. Of course, changing opinions isn’t necessarily a sign of deep thought. The issue of celebrating rigid thinking has only become worse now that we all have the ability to instantly publish our poorly formed thoughts to a worldwide audience. “I changed my mind” are four powerful and liberating words.

Surly Megathread of destruction and doom. [BEWARE VERY DOOMY]
This stuff becomes too personalized. Some cops are bad, some are ok, some are great, but the system and culture perpetuates and defends the terrible behavior of the bad group. In some cases, it turns the non-bad group into bad actors as well. Whether or not the good cops are good because of their great intentions or bad because they participate in an oppressive system is an irrelevant distraction. The problem is the system and culture, not the individual cops. Of course murderous cops should be removed immediately. Some people associated with the BLM movement are criminals, some hold radical political beliefs, and some are regular people of all colors that want the system and culture to be reformed. Focusing on the radical and criminal elements at the expense of the much larger movement only serves as a distraction from the problem that is clear to pretty much everyone. The criminals should face the criminal justice system though. They shouldn’t be ignored, but they also shouldn’t be weaponized to delegitimize the movement, which is happening pretty widely these days. Competing whatabouts only perpetuates the status quo, which we all agree is unhealthy. The problem is the culture and the system.

Put her in charge of a police reform task force and have them push for real, meaningful, nationwide reform. Don’t call it defund the police.

Humans aren’t very good at intuitively understanding numbers once they reach a certain size (both the humans and the numbers). It shouldn’t be a surprise that we aren’t accurately estimating how bad it is because that’s something we’re bad at. Even smart, mathematically literate people are bad at this. I’m not sure we should read into these kinds of surveys beyond this.
