Just because his trade value isn't high doesn't mean it isn't as high as it will ever be.

I agree re: Maldy, but, I make an exception for Framber starts. Given that so much of his success depends on him being in a proper mindset, if Maldy helps him get there, so be it. Playing 1 out of every 5 games would be a perfect workload for Maldy.

He may end up being a great GM, but he's already proven to be a world class bullshitter.

What savings scheme do you use for a kid?
That was my original plan, and I may still do it. I am just concerned about him having immediate access to $25-$50k on his 18th birthday. I know what I would have done with that money when I was 18, and that's a scary thought as a parent.

Just popping in to say fuck Dusty. His complete lack of urgency may very well cost us the division this year.

Best tres leches in town too.- Songs that hit you or someone you love in the feels
Part of what makes him such a great songwriter is that he always gets the little details right. "Drinking sweet tea out of Styrofoam cups" is a prefect example. Always takes me back to wakes in an auxiliary building of some small church that somehow always smell the same.- What savings scheme do you use for a kid?
I opened a 529 for my 17 month old. Plan to invest $9k a year, which, with reasonable growth, should allow me to fully fund 4 years at a state school. Another benefit I haven't seen mentioned here it that you can use up to $10k per year on private K-12 education expenses if you choose to go that route. I am torn about opening a custodial account for him. I'd like to invest $100-$200 per month in a low-cost total market index fund for him, but that money becomes his at 18 without restrictions. It's hard not to think about how I would have spent that amount of money at that age and conclude that I'm actually doing him a favor by not doing this. Given there aren't any tax advantages to a custodial account, I guess I could just invest that money for him in my own brokerage account, but I am unsure if I would be able to transfer the account/money to him without realizing capital gains. I'll definitely open a Roth for him when he starts earing income.- Shit HEB Makes (when its open).

Interesting. Based on this, it appears that elements from the non-cannon Thrawn books will become cannon by their inclusion in this series. I am surprised that the cannon Thrawn books (which are excellent) aren't included on the list.- 2023 Houston Astros Thread
I don't think we should get involved in a bidding war for any big splash trade targets. I think the smart move is to add a middle of the rotation SP who can pitch game 3 of the ALDS and Game 4 of the ALCS/WS and a cheap bat if possible. The bottom line is this: if we don't see improvements from the bats we have and Javier and/or Brown, no one we trade for is going to push us over the top, and if we do see those improvements, we don't anything more that what I mentioned.- Surly Dad Thread
My son had a tie. I recommend going to a pediatric dentist to have it checked out before you do anything. We made the mistake of listening to a pediatrician who recommended letting her clip it and provided no information about post-op care. Unfortunately, all this led to was the clipped portions reattaching and creating scar tissue. This made the subsequent lasering more difficult and the recovery slower. It was a dumb decision in hindsight, but this was three days post-birth and we were sleep deprived and clueless. I hesitate to share this next part because I don't want to dissuade you from doing what you need to do, but the post-op care is brutal. You need the clipped portions to heal without reattaching to one another. For us, this meant having to forcibly push his tongue up and hold it for a few seconds seconds or so to essentially reopen the wound and then massage the wound for a few seconds. We had to do this every four hours for a few weeks. It was truly gut wrenching. You can find photos and videos of the process by searching tongue tie post-op, but, honestly, it may be better if you don't see it before you're forced to do it.- 2023 Houston Astros Thread
