Nothing is worse than the five malt, so you should be safe.

    Blanton’s. It’s better than Blanton’s.

They all seem about the same to me and the 101 is a better value. There’s a lot more fun variation for the dollar in Elijah Craig.

JD 12 is beautiful, I love it. Good value even at secondary.

He was the man. I tailgated his place in Pville with a buddy one time, showed up an hour early and drank beer while he finished cooking. He thought it was about the funniest thing he’d ever seen and spent most of that time giving us samples and talking up the half chicken. When we finally ordered he threw in the half chicken for free after we ordered another $80 or so worth of cue. He was an amazingly genuine, kind dude with a real knack for making great food. The half chicken was the finest white meat bbq I’ve ever had. Pic below is from that day the year before he made TM top 50. My other favorite memory of him was when a friend face timed him from my backyard while I was doing half a goat over an oak fire and the other half in a Caja China box. His first words were after answering and hearing what we were up to were, “oh man, I love goat!” Rest in peace.

Friday rye action. The Jack is better than I remembered, Cornerstone is still pretty lame for a Master’s Keep bottle. Thin mouthfeel, ethanol nose and just not much going on other than rye spice.
  7. 2-3 times per year. The X-frames aren’t really that bad to shoot, probably even more comfortable than a Model 29 44 mag with classic wood stocks. But will sure as hell put a smile on your face every time. And if you get tired of the muzzle blast and expense of shooting 460 mag you can plink away with 45 lc at 1/5 the price.
  8. Nah, after a miserable performance in ‘21 we did pretty well in ‘23 and drama this go ‘round has been limited to a few customers with low/no propane. Amerigas has them on individual tanks for now. I got all the AE alerts about impending doom and outages in the area, which were triggering.
  9. I carry a 460 S&W up in Alaska, but that’s open for bear protection. I find them annoying for concealed when there’s always an easier to conceal and reload semi auto option. You’re definitely not going to find an auto throwing out this kind of knock down power.

It’s good, but I can’t wrap my head around it winning blind against the Parker’s. I tried the Overholt later against Pikesville and would say that’s a very slight drop off for half the retail price. I didn’t love the special release Jack Barrel Proof Rye, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt because my palate is definitely not always aligned with the average American on rye.

Wait, top is right or left?

Nah, it’s more like EH Taylor Barrel Proof or Stagg Jr in quality, age and taste.

Long time no SFTB, it’s been open for years and is better than I remembered. Or maybe I just haven’t been drinking much BT lately and the cherry note is making a comeback.
  14. I hate this part of Alaska (southeast for life), but you’re a borderline saint for teaching in the bush.

That first year (‘19 or ‘20?) of the 13 was straight trash, but the subsequent 11 was actually pretty great. For a double digit bourbon the price is insane and I’m glad it exists. The Blue Note 17 year picks are still the Dickel high water mark for me.

Van Winkle rye shooter is a nice touch.

Little Book had drifted away from the Lord’s light for two years, but it’s back this year and fairly easy to find at retail. Stellar mouth feel, great nose and interesting flavors outside of the normal caramel/vanilla. It makes me crave pecan pie.

Those are both a no for me.

It was kind of a beat down. The Overholt is a way different profile with lots of rye spice and very alcohol forward with a non-distinct nose. The Parker’s has more oak influence and complexity with an incredible nose. The MSRP difference is definitely warranted and I’m not even sure you’d think they were such similar products if you tried them blind side by side.

10 year Beam rye showdown. Let’s go Hawkeyes.

And cheaper than any high proof, double digit rye Kentucky rye on the market. It’s more in line with pricing on the 10+ year MGP ryes that are normally released at lower proof by NDPs. And the new $100 price point on Booker’s sucks anyway. GTFOH with that price on 6 year bourbon.

I just grabbed one so I can try it side by side with the Parker’s for science. Based on the cases I’m seeing stacked up It’s looking like they aimed a bit high on the retail price.

Half price relative to Parker’s 10 year rye and cheaper than any barrel proof 10 year Kentucky rye that I’m aware of. Seems like a solid value if it’s 75% as good as the PHC, which seems likely.
  25. USCATX replied to Jimbaround's topic in Food and Travel
It’s very good, significantly better than a barell proof 8 year MGP pick I had after to compare. I think it’s the best PHC in years and it’s dropping on secondary to well below the heavy char and double barrel one.
